Anyone told they are going to have a big baby?

I am 32 weeks and due in july and from the 20 week scan baby has been measuring bigger.
At 29 week scan was told baby is ment to be 2lb 6oz on average but baby was measuring 3lb 8oz. consultant then said baby will be big at least 9 and half pounds.
Went to see the midwife few weeks ago and she said my bump is measuring above the largest line on the chart and have to go next week to see if baby is still growing at a higher rate. If i am then i will need to go for growth scan.

I have chronic back pain for the last 5 years and suffered PSD with my ast 2 pregnancies. Think there concerned as they dont want me to deliver a massive baby but the last thing i want is to be induced at 38 weeks and have a small baby because they have got it wrong.

Has anyone else been told any of this and how much would you trust the measurements of the scan and bump measuring?

Yep. I was told the baby could be up to 10lb 13. I was being scanned and traced every day and in the end they decided elcs would be safer for various reasons a couple of days before my edd. She was 8lb 6.

ItsMyLastOne · 24/05/2012 15:29

My sister was told her dd would be around 11lb. She came by emcs at 39+6 and weighed 6lb 12oz.

Mrsfred · 24/05/2012 15:33

With DD1 I was told the baby was very big and scanned every three weeks from 28 weeks. She was 7lb 6.5oz but had a huge head Smile

I had bought everything in 0-3 months instead of newborn and all her early pictures show her with rolled up sleeves!

EldritchCleavage · 24/05/2012 15:36

Yes, right up until delivery every midwife and consultant told me I was having a big baby. In fact, she was 3.4kg (which I think is about 7lb 3 oz). Admittedly, I didn't have a growth scan, this was based on standard scans and bump measurements.

Dinosaurdrip · 24/05/2012 15:45

Yep I was told with ds2 that he was going to be huge because ds1 was 9lb 15.5oz and the fact that I was measuring 3-4cm too big consult scanned me and said to expect maybe 11 or 12 lb I was shi**ing myself. Ds2 was born 6 days late at 9lb 11oz.

mrswee · 24/05/2012 15:46

I was told after extra scans for being breech that I was having a big baby, I was also measuring big (lots of cheese cake) She was apperently already over 8lbs at around 36 weeks... Turned out she was 7.2lbs at the birth and too tiny for newborn clothes.. possibly she lost weight while I was over due, I will never know but scans and measurements are not an exact.

revolutionconfirmed · 24/05/2012 15:49

I was told I had a big baby both times. I was told 10lb+. At 39 weeks DD1 was 9lb7oz and at 38 weeks DD2 was 8lb11oz.

Both big babies but not huge babies and pretty straight forward births.

Tillyscoutsmum · 24/05/2012 15:49

Yes.... I was told both of mine were big. They were 9lb 12oz and 10lb 5oz so I suppose they were right Smile It was fine though...

CherryBlossom27 · 24/05/2012 15:50

I was measuring exactly right e.g. 35cms.and 35 weeks pregnant the whole way through and my community midwife came to see me at home and was shocked as DS was 9lb 1oz! I guess it can go either way, I'm not sure how the growth scans work but they don't seem to be 100% accurate....if it makes you feel better I had a really good quick straight forward labour and actually found the whole thing very empowering!

biddyofsuburbia · 24/05/2012 15:50

I was convinced I was having a big baby with my third but they actually refused to guesstimate in the end as I was told the scan / estimate could be wrong by at least a pound either way. They tried sweeps etc from 39 weeks but cervix not ripe and head not engaged so...I was induced at 41 weeks and baby was 10lb 8oz, but with a mercifully normal sized head! I think they only really worry if they think there is a risk of the shoulders getting stuck during delivery and/or you have a particularly small pelvis. I was told that as I had delivered 'big' babies before I would be fine! I don't think they will induce / c-section before 40 weeks unless they think there is a fairly serious risk to you or the baby. Good luck!

shottspar · 24/05/2012 15:53

Yes, I was told DS would be "huge" and had several scans. I was induced at 37+5 due to GD and he was 7lb 2oz and only 18 inches long. Midwife also said that when she broke my waters there wouldn't be much - it was like a flood of biblical proportions!

seeker · 24/05/2012 17:11

Unless you have a particularly small pelvis the size of the baby shouldn't make much difference. I had two big ones but straightforward drug free labours. So try not to worry about the size. Ds was 10.6 and was born in just under 3 hours from first twinge to in the scales!

NinthWave · 24/05/2012 17:15

I was induced at term due to previous shoulder dystocia. Growth scan predicted a 9lb-er.

He was 10lb 6oz Shock but the birth itself was fine.

thanks so much ladies for ur stories and advice. my other 2 DC were big and im not overly concerned about the baby being really big just afraid of what way my back will be left if i do have a complicated and hard birth.

biddy i too feel like this baby is big can see a full leg coming out of my bump and regularly have to run a full foot with 5 stumpy toes back in and away from my ribs :) my bump is massive but so is the baby its crazy.

being my 3rd i defo feel like i have never been pregnant before its strange. dont remember any of this.

A friend of mine had a 13lb 4oz boy naturally it makes my eyes water. They told her he was on the small side which i still cant believe.

I was told I would be having a smallish baby (long time ago) - around 6 and a half pounds. He was 9lbs 7 oz, (first) so someone somewhere got something wrong

goingmadtrying · 24/05/2012 18:43

im currently 29+4 with id twins and had my last scan check on Tuesday, was told twin 1 is approx 3lb2 and twin 2 3lb5, i get a letter with very scan appointment, and babies are on 50th centile, i also noticed that the baby weight approximation is actually a formula of the head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length, so if your baby has short legs or a big head the weight i would think could be not so accurate, try not to worry too much :)

MushroomMagee · 24/05/2012 22:53

On the 20 week scan my babies head was on the 85th centile. His femur was 75th and his abdominal circumference was over the 99th.
Yet I have been pretty consistently measuring under dates the whole way through. Still wetting myself that he will be 10lb though!!

madwomanintheattic · 24/05/2012 23:05

Mushroom, there's a pretty good chance he will be an 8lber. Those 'measurements' mean v little.

MushroomMagee · 24/05/2012 23:10

Do you think so? I pray that you're right! Dd was 8lb 5 though and aren't second babies usually bigger?!

AuraofDora · 24/05/2012 23:13

I was told my bump was healthy.. my baby boy was nearly 10 3 oz
they just dont know really

biddyofsuburbia · 24/05/2012 23:55

I feel for you sambrads I really do! It was all the comments about the size of the bump that got me down in the end so if you ever need to whinge about that I am your woman! Hope your back holds out and as a note of hope for you I actually enjoyed Shockthis last labour, induction and all, and it's all worth it when you have your gorgeous bundle at the end! My consultant told me that babies get progressively bigger usually because for some reason you grow better placentas up until about number four (after which they tend to start to get smaller again) and the more efficient the placenta the bigger the baby tends to be...I am stopping at number three just in case he's right!

sambrads · 25/05/2012 20:34

biddy i think im gonna stop at 3 :)
when was ur last pregnancy?

Frakiosaurus · 25/05/2012 20:40

I was told big and big head. 8lb4 and yes, big head....

AdventuresWithVoles · 25/05/2012 20:45

34 week scan suggested DS1 would be nearly 10 lb if born at 40 weeks.
MW puzzled palpating me saying "doesn't feel that big..."
Born at 39 weeks & only 6 lb 8oz. Hmm

Friend had a full-term 12 lber (vaginally) & they had no idea he would be so big.

Princesslovelyboo · 25/05/2012 20:48

I was told I was 'having a big 'un' but they were not concerned as I measured fine, I vaginally delivered with only gas and air 10lb 3.5 oz of strapping ds Grin
