When did you have to go into maternity clothes?

Coming up to 16 weeks pg with dc2 and I think I'm going to have to dig out some maternity trousers before work tomorrow... am quite horrified as it was well after 20 weeks the first time round, does this mean my stomach muscles are shot?

When have others had to resort to elastic waistbands?

Today! I couldn't do up my jeans this morning, at 18 weeks. And it's my first. Although they are fairly tight at the best of times, so maybe it doesn't count?

highland80 · 29/04/2012 18:34

Not in materninty clothes as such yet. (19) weeks. However, only about 3 pairs of yoga pants now fit and a few dresses. Trying to put off buying maternity items till 20 scan.

HandMadeTail · 29/04/2012 18:37

Your muscles stretch when you are pregnant, so you do get bigger, faster, second time around.

festiemum · 29/04/2012 18:38

Bloody hell! I've been in elasticated waists since about 10 weeks!! It is my 4th though!

I think you get bigger earlier with each subsequent pregnancy, whoah! The nice way to think about it is that your body knows what it's doing! :o

HatchedAtTheHutch · 29/04/2012 18:41

Really early, about 12 weeks, really battled over doing it so early but felt so much more comfortable when I did. Think partly it was because pregnancy with DS was like someone had set off the "pull cord to inflate" function on my body!

urbanturban · 29/04/2012 18:52

Agree with festiemum - am 18 weeks pregnant with DC3 and been in maternity work trousers since 10 weeks Blush

Am wearing a larger size of jeans already too, dread to think what size I will be at the end!

blondiedollface · 29/04/2012 19:58

First pregnancy and only bought one pair of maternity jeans at 24 weeks, then one pair of yoga pants at 30 weeks... My bump is measuring spot on but I'd say I haven't put on any weight anywhere other than my bump and boobs, so everything else still fits!

Am currently 33weeks, maybe baby will expand vastly in the next 7 weeks and I'll be left with no clothes to wear :(

raininginbaltimore · 29/04/2012 20:00

Second time for me and it was 10 weeks. First time I was nearly 14 I think. I haven't put much weight on, but my belly just popped out this time- no muscle tone left!

sparklekitty · 29/04/2012 20:06

I'm 19 weeks with my first (and was small size 10 prior) I've been in maternity and larger size 12s since about 15/16 weeks, however, I have spent today clearing out as I can officially only get into maternity trousers/jeans now! People told me I wouldn't need to worry until at least 6 months as I was small to start with! I feel giant now, imagine how I'll feel at 30 weeks.

FatimaLovesBread · 29/04/2012 20:15

I'm pushing it fitting in to normal clothes at the moment. I've two pairs of jeans that fit, one I have to unbutton if I wear for more than a few hours. I've 3 pairs of trackies I fit in.
I've bought some maternity jeans and think i'll be in them shortly.

I'm only 10 weeks :(

oikopolis · 29/04/2012 20:24

i was in elasticated jeans at 10 weeks too... but for me it was the horrendous bloating, not the baby iyswim!

Mothpop · 29/04/2012 21:08

27 weeks at the moment and have valiantly fought the 'own clothes' battle for the last 3 weeks. Trousers have been the greatest issue and I coped with a hair band looped around the button for a while but it seems the weight is now appearing on my legs and bottom so this week I have finally given in! Many of my tops still seem to fit still :-).

Mothpop · 29/04/2012 21:09

I should add that thus is my first baby and was pretty small around the middle to start with.

therumoursaretrue · 29/04/2012 21:17

23 weeks here, have just bought a few maternity bits this week, but not much as I'm not convinced any of it looks decent on me!

Normal clothes are still fitting, still wearing my skinny jeans but they kind of sit below my bump.

Bought 3 dresses, one is tight-fitting and looks great. Other 2 are like tents and make me look much bigger so not sure about them! Bought maternity jeans, lady in the shop said to stick with my usual size but ended up with 2 sizes smaller and they are still a bit big, but reckon they will fit soon!

Meglet · 29/04/2012 21:17

10 weeks for trousers and jeans both times. There ain't much room for growth in skinny jeans.

Dresses and t-shirts by 16 weeks. My normal wardrobe was all fitted stuff, totally unsuited for a bump.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 30/04/2012 08:48

About 12 weeks with my jeans - I've not gone maternity tops yet though (am 17 weeks). My jeans kept digging into my uterus when I sat down, I'm far more comfy now!

Aworryingtrend · 30/04/2012 09:04

15 weeks but as others have said I think its more bloat than baby! Some maternity stuff still a bit too big round the waist but I'd rather that and be comfortable. I'm trying my normal trousers plus bump band today and I'm not convinced to be honest, it doesn't feel as comfortable as just wearing a pair of trousers.

Clararara · 30/04/2012 10:31

Last spring/summer I lost tons of weight before my wedding and I bought lots of tiny clothes to show off! Will probably never fit in them again.

I went from size 8 to size 10 jeans around 14 weeks, more because of gaining fat/water than baby. Although for "skinny" jeans they are a bit big in the leg but tight round the waist. I'm nearly 20 weeks now and still wearing the size 10s- mostly because they sit low.

Bought some great maternity jeans on ebay. Wearing them occasionally- I got a gorgeous pair of 2nd hand Cords from H&M Mama and I'm chuffed with them. Will need to wear the maternity trouser more soon but they feel like they're falling down.

I also bought some lovely 2nd hand maternity tops for summer when I will be big, but they're still too roomy. Stopped wearing some of my tighter tops at about 12 weeks because my boobs got too big. I stick to wearing slightly longer length tops or I get a cold draught around the middle!

I swear my waist measurement is more to do with how much I'm eating than how big my bump is!

I can only fit into one skirt for work now (which is stretchy) - 18 wks+4 with DC1. Usually wear leggings underneath but gave up on ordinary ones about a month ago cos they kept slipping down my little bump which was REALLY annoying.

Tops are just about ok, but I think that's not going to be for much longer as my boobs are having another growth spurt! Shock

About 15 weeks for me. By the end of my pg even maternity clothes were tight as my bump was huge!

PoohBearsHole · 30/04/2012 11:55

I went in quite early (12 weeks with dc2) but then didn't grow for ages and then had another spurt later so although bigger earlier I was smaller for longer if that makes any sense?

Velo · 30/04/2012 17:45

I'm 17 weeks with my first....

I bought my first maternity clothes over the weekend as clothing was getting tight and tights were very uncomfortable. Bra has been digging into my chest for a couple of weeks now so have ditched the underwired for non-wired - I'm getting quite big in the chest department and I reckon that I'm going to keep expanding.

missleslieanne · 30/04/2012 18:25

I was leaving the top button of my jeans undone from about 18 weeks, and gave in to maternity ones at about 20.
My biggest problem (pardon the pun!), was up top - my boobs expanded way early! I was a big fan of the strappy tops with built in maternity bra (www.maternityandnursingbras.co.uk/bravado-nursing-bra-tank-top-1097-p.asp) - great to layer underneath regular tops, and most double up as breastfeeding tops too.

Wouldn't worry though - as long as you & your bump are comfy, it's all good!
