Gender scan incorrect?

Hello Ladies... I was just wondering if any of you have ever had a gender scan at 20weeks that turned out to be incorrect or know of any one who has experienced this?

I have a friend who had this.

Told it was a girl and it was a boy. It was hiding apparently Grin

Bit of a pain because she had all pink stuff, but they were so happy to have a healthy baby it wasn't the end of the world :)

They do state that they can't be certain when sexing during the scan.

urbanturban · 21/04/2012 18:11

I had two gender scans with our two DDs and both were correct. Am about to go for a gender scan for DC3 next week too.
I know a few people who have paid for private scans to find out the gender (NHS in Scotland won't disclose the gender) and they have all been correct thank goodness!
HTH Grin

I was told DD was a boy at the 20 week scan. She spent her first days in hospital in blue and I spent my recovery time explaining it repeatedly.

Only took white babygros when DS was born!

vlmnw7 · 21/04/2012 18:14

Thanks for the reply... I was asking as at our first scan we were told boy and then at 20 weeks girl. I honestly don't mind which sex the baby is as long as he/she is healthy!!! Only we don't have much money and it would be nice to know if we are getting everything down from the roof or buying new bits :)

Oh no Confused

I would be more inclined to go with the 20wk scan. More reliable, but then.... Grin

They did tell me at my 20 week that I definitely had a boy, I could see his todger and everything Grin

vlmnw7 · 21/04/2012 18:23

lol.... well the sonographer didn't help much either as she said she was 95% sure it was a girl but did comment that the bubba's legs were all scrunched up and that if we were told boy last time then to go with that! Now we are officially CONFUSED.COM Confused

I know two people who were told the wrong gender. But I think more often than not they get it right, or say they're not sure.

Were you 12 weeks when you were told it was a boy? If so then I'd go with the second scan as they're quite inaccurate usually on 12 week scans.

5madthings · 21/04/2012 18:25

my friend was told girl at her 20wk scan and then had another scan later in her pregnancy and it was most definitely BOY!

i know of a few where they get it wrong but they are fairly good but the sonographer will tell you if they cant say for sure, so in your case i would hedge your bets and get gender neutral stuff!

AKMD · 21/04/2012 18:26

I know one friend who had a girl-that-was-a-boy. Cue a mad dash from the hospital to get 'boy' clothes!

vlmnw7 · 21/04/2012 18:35

Yes it was 13 weeks they said boy from both the nub theory and the potty shot and 20 weeks they said girl but legs were scrunched up. I have loads and loads of girls items so think we may have to invest in a few neutral items as you suggested madthings would just be nice to know - im not very good at being patient :)

I know someone who was told it was boy and turned out to be a girl. She didn't get named for a while.

Murtette · 21/04/2012 19:05

I've heard that more girls turn out to be boys than boys turn out to be girls (if you see what I mean) as, to tell you its a boy at the 20 week scan, they have to see something identifiable (and may well show it to you) so its a positive decision.

We were told it was a boy at the 20 week scan & will find out in 2 weeks time. I have mostly blue/boyish themes in the hospital bag but I also have a couple of neutral babygros just in case. We have decided on our girl's name (probably because DP doesn't care as it should be a boy) but have just to finalise the boy's name.

BikeRunSki · 21/04/2012 19:12

At 20 wk scan was told 'almost certainly a boy'. DH could not stand the tiny uncertainty, so we had a private scan too, at 22 weeks, which said girl. It was a girl

TheDetective · 21/04/2012 19:33

I have never known anyone with the wrong sex at scan - and I have a lot of experience of this - being a midwife!

In 8 years, I just have never seen it!!! I'm sure I will one day though!

RandomMess · 21/04/2012 19:36

I know someone who was expecting dc3, she had 2 sons, had all the pink ready for her dd and it was a boy!

bishboschone · 21/04/2012 19:37

Arbour 20 week scan she couldn't be sure but said girl . I paid for a gender scan at 25 weeks .. It was a boy... By the way , the 20 week scan is not a gender scan , it's an anomaly scan and fining out the sex is just an aside .

handsarefull · 21/04/2012 20:26

I had gender scan at 16wks told 99% boy didn't buy nothing thought i would ask at my 20wk and just said could you tell me what they think it is and said I had a scan at 16wks but wanted another opinion and she also said 99% boy :)

mrswee · 21/04/2012 20:34

urbanturban what NHS board are you in? I am from lothians and they are happy to tell you the sex at the 20 week scan here. Although there is a big disclaimer that it may not be 100% accurate.

I found out with my DD and they did say that it is easier to get it worng with a girl than a boy.

Flisspaps · 21/04/2012 20:35

Woman in the bay next to me last week was told she was having a 9lb girl at a growth scan at around 32w.

She had a 6lb boy!

BlueAndRedMakePurple · 21/04/2012 20:41

I have pictures of my little boy's todger, so it appears I'm probably safe.

Have never known anyone who has been told wrong.

Floggingmolly · 21/04/2012 20:46

I've never heard of anyone being told the gender at the 13 week scan. Is this usual? I can't imagine they'd be remotely reliable anyway.

DilysPrice · 21/04/2012 20:48

Some scans are better than others - it's the luck of the draw. Both my two were displaying an exhibitionist streak which they retain to this day, so even we, as amateurs, were in no doubt whatsoever. Sounds like you just have a coy bump OP. Surely you've got a couple of plain white babyhood in the loft though, that can tide you over until you can get to Asda? Please tell me that every single thing isn't covered in pink flowers?

But do tell any relatives who may be buying to go neutral though.

MissCoffeeNWine · 21/04/2012 20:52

What are boy and girl things when you're talking about a newborn? Do you mean blue and pink? Why mad dashes from the hospital for 'boy things' - does his todger drop off if he comes into contact with something pink?

I don't care what I have, it will wear and use the same stuff of all colours and styles.

DilysPrice · 21/04/2012 20:53

"babyhood" = "babygros"

vlmnw7 · 21/04/2012 20:56

From the nub at 12 week ultrasound I was told at all x4 of my previous pregnancies the sex of my babies and all were correct, hence why we are confused this time.

lol dilysprice no I actually hate the pink frilly stuff its just we don't really have anything suitable to put a boy in. Wasn't expecting this little surprise either so have to get a new buggy etc
