Gender scan incorrect?

Hello Ladies... I was just wondering if any of you have ever had a gender scan at 20weeks that turned out to be incorrect or know of any one who has experienced this?

At my 20 week the sonographer was really vague, she said something like "I think I saw something there, so it's probably a boy" I expected her to go back over and check, but she didn't. So I'm not sure how sure she was IYKWIM.

I'm having a private growth scan, partly to get reliable confirmation (I was convinced I was having a girl, so it was a bit of a shock, I wouldn't want the reverse shock on the day I meet him!) and also because of other things like a low placenta that I want reassurance and a sonographer who isn't in a rush and actually talks to me to go over.

DS was dressed in colourful stuff, primary colours, or navy blue, so it would do for either. I deliberately avoid baby pink and baby blue clothes (or any other pastels really), so that makes things easier.

Ow me and oh new straight away what we were having lol all we sore with both boys were a giant pair of balls on the screen lol no mistaking that. I don't know anyone personally but been told friends of friends of friends that it's happened to her cousins partners sister in law lol Wink so more often than not the scan is correct

BellaCB · 21/04/2012 21:44

I think it depends on what you can see on the scan. When we saw DD at her 20w scan we managed to get and, ahem, 'underside' view and there was absolutely no way that she was anything but a girl. Could you see anything on the scan? I reckon that if even a layman can see a pair or, as your sonographer called it, 'a burger in a bun' then you are probably safe! Otherwise just buy beige and cream - this works anyway if you don't like girly frills!

I cant remember who posted that NHS Scotland dont disclose gender but it certainly isnt true for all areas.

I am in galloway region and they do tell you if you ask but we were referred to Yorkhill in glasgow and they had signs up their saying they dont. I asked why and was told its due to stats that when they did disclose sex, the abortion rate was very high in certain cultures when a girl had been disclosed.

awful.

My little sister was a boy until she was born. We were told it was more likely to be a girl but had the same issue of legs being scrunched up. We only hae gender netural colours now. Will find out in just over month I guess.

AThingInYourLife · 22/04/2012 07:57

"Cue a mad dash from the hospital to get 'boy' clothes!"

Shock

Some people's priorities just baffle me.

Does it really matter if an hours old baby is not in gender suitable clothing?

Confused
Bunbaker · 22/04/2012 08:01

And why do people insist on gender specific colours anyway? I didn't want to know the sex and bought clothes that were anything but pink or blue. It isn't difficult.

MarieFromStMoritz · 22/04/2012 08:08

Actually, the best time to tell the gender is at the 12 week scan. The 'nub' (the thing that turns out to be either a penis or a clitoris) is angled differently and boys' ones often have a bulb at the end.

Also, boys and girls have different shaped skulls.

Bonkerz · 22/04/2012 08:10

My sister was told she was having a girl, she had extra scans due to issues and was told at each one defo a girl..... I was also pregnant with a girl at the time so bought two of everything. My girl born in dec and she went Into labour in the April....I dashed there to give clothes and flowers etc. got to hospital about 40 minutes after she gave birth. Walked in room to a baby just in a vest! Sis said its a boy....I ha to take his nappy off to believe her. He is now 6!!!!!! Strangely enough when he was moved to a ward she was next to a woman who had gone into hospital expecting a boy and had had a girl so they swapped all gender specific clothes and equipment lol. Seems the hospital didn't get them right!!!!!!!!!

Alisonjayjay · 22/04/2012 09:17

It happened to me! At my 20 week scan I was told I was having a girl. I was so excited. We picked a name and bought loads of gorgeous little dresses and pink cot bedding etc. I was in for a shock! When my baby came out I heard the midwife shout "it's a boy!". I couldn't believe it! I just burst out laughing! I was so happy because my baby was healthy and safe and of course I loved him instantly. He was a big shock though and of course we had no clothes or anything for a boy! We didn't even have any names picked out so he didn't have a name till about a week old. We obviously lost out on a bit of money as we had to get rid of the girls stuff to buy things for a boy. Some things which still had labels on were exchanged but I really didn't care about any of that. I was in love with my baby and it definitely made a good conversation and a story to tell him when he was older. He's now 7 and I wouldn't change him for the world! I'm now 36 weeks pregnant with number 2 and its safe to say we decided not to find out the sex this time! :)

terilou87 · 22/04/2012 12:37

my cousin had three scans after 16 week and was told it is a girl, bought all pink , pink and white pram frilly pink dresses and when she gave birth it was a boy this is now 6 years ago but it was a big shock. i would suggest 3d scan as this shows clear the gender, but i have had 3 children already and i knew what i was having before the scan but all scans were correct

5madthings · 22/04/2012 12:50

we were told no 5 was a girl and she was is indeed a girl! but after 4 boys we were convinced the sonsographer must be wrong so didnt buy girls stuff, she wore the same unisex babies grows the boys did and a few 'boy' ones as well.

i am not a fan of pink so she doesnt wear much pink, but i am enjoying buying pinafores and tights etc, but in those early weeks it really doesnt matter and dd just wore babygrows, some girl ones but mainly unisex and hand me downs from the boys or from friends :)

Ilovedaintynuts · 22/04/2012 13:03

I would not have been confident of having either gender unless I had seen the genitals myself.
So I did. 1 DS and 2 DDs and I asked the sonographer if I could see for myself.
So for me I was certain and knew 100% what I was having.
If I hadn't I would have kept an open mind.
And the poster who suggested the 'nub theory' at 12 weeks was the best way to determine gender, absolute rubbish. There is some evidence that the 'angle of the dangle' might predict gender but studies suggest a failure rate of 30-40%. Hardly conclusive Hmm

5madthings · 22/04/2012 13:11

with dd we were so incredulous that the sonogrpahre checked LOADS and she even said "i am not allowed to say i am 100% sure but i AM 100% sure this baby is a girl"

i still PAID for another scan at 28wks where i SAW her 'burger bun' as they call it, for myself and i didnt believe it then really, i was so convinced i could only have boys! Blush

urbanturban · 23/04/2012 21:20

mrswee
Sorry for the late reply, been painting all weekend and it really ate into my MN time!
We are in Stirling so Forth Valley NHS area, thought it was all health boards here that had a policy not to tell as friends from Edinburgh weren't told either!
Tsk, Forth Valley have just cos me £79! Grin

mummy2oneandbump · 25/04/2012 11:13

Glasgow offers it in Scotland. However I'm in same shoes as mrswee I'm in Falkirk which comes under Forth Valley. I've not even had my 12week scan yet but I'm going to book my gender scan this week as I already have a girl and would like to know with no2 xx

TitsalinaBumSquash · 25/04/2012 17:57

DS1 was a girl until 30 weeks, they said girl at 20 weeks, then I asked again out of sheer curiosity at 30 weeks and the lady doing the scan said "oh yes they are defiantly a large pair of testicles for a girl" Grin

sikander1 · 21/02/2019 00:04

I know this is an old feed but wasn’t sure if anyone else is going to get this but hey ho! I have had a totally different pregnancy than I did first time with my girl! Now 5 years on I had my 20week skan and the lady said it’s a girl! Wouldn’t mind boy or girl but want to make sure! Reading all these previous threads I’m worried! Anyone recently had the same issue??

KateTTC123 · 21/02/2019 06:17

@urbanturban I'm at forth valley too this time and they are one of the few in Scotland who don't say. Last time I was at the Southern General and they happily told us it was a boy. I find it very frustrating that FV wont say either way but I'm high risk and will have had 12 scans by the time I get to term (if I do!) So in my case going private seems silly at this point. I will be keeping my eyes peeled during every scan though!!
