How many cm were you when you went into hosp?

morning!

I'm 40+5 and hoping to go into labour very soon! On the hospital tour they told us to try and wait to go in until we are having 3/4 contractions every 10 minutes that last a minute each!

That sounds painful to me and I'm not sure I'll have lasted that long with no gas and air!!

Do you know how many cm you were at about that stage, I'm hoping it's about 6/7 by that point and I don't wanna get there and be told I'm 2 lol

God I'm scared now

10 and had been pushing for a good couple of hours!

"On the hospital tour they told us to try and wait to go in until we are having 3/4 contractions every 10 minutes that last a minute each!"

Goodness. I only got to that stage with dd during the second stage. I only had a three minute second stage. Thank goodness for a homebirth.

FrillyMilly · 17/04/2012 11:07

We were told contractions every 5-7 minutes. First labour I went in when contraction were every 5 minutes and I was 6 cm. Second time I had to be induced due to hind water leak.

MillyStar · 17/04/2012 11:08

I know it seems very late to me think i'll be on my way at half that!!

I was having 3 ctrx in 10 min, lasting about 1 mins each and was 7cm when I got to the hospital with ds. I was just getting to the point where the pain was a bit to much to handle.

With dd2 I was having spaced out ctrx lasting between 30sec-1min and got to the hospital at 5cm.

With dd1 I was already in hospital before ctrx started but managed to get to 5cm with no pains and had her with no regular contractions.

Contractions are no indication of how far dilated you are.

Good luck though, I hope you have your baby soon.

piratecat · 17/04/2012 11:08

well i was having those you describe, and was only 1 cm but of course i didn't know how many i was so we went in as hospital a long way from home, so spent about another 12 hours like that till i got about 5.

I think you go when you need help for the pain.

doughnutty · 17/04/2012 11:10

Was 4cms with first. Had been contracting for, let's see, 7 hours. Pretty regular from the get go. Had phoned to say we were coming an hour and a half before. The midwife tried to put me off saying they'd send me home if I was less than 3cms.

I was 5cms with second. Had been on and off for a good 14 hours since first twinges. Was through the night though so was hard going as they kept coming and going.

GinPalace · 17/04/2012 11:12

I was 10cm and contractions every minute!
I didn't want to go in as had not been in labour long and didn't want to get sent away for being too early. DH made me. Arf!
I got there and she said yes - you're fully dilated so just push him out. Born less than an hour later.
Was fortunate we live close to hospital - I really didn't expect that so would have left it way too late otherwise.
That was first baby - lucky lucky me.
So most of my pain relief was from TENs machine with gas and air for last little bit. AOK. Grin

javotte · 17/04/2012 11:40

DH made me go when the pain became too much (I wanted to wait because I hadn't been having contractions for a long time).
I was about 6 when I arrived and DD was born 15mn later.

GinPalace · 17/04/2012 11:46

Javotte have I read that right - 6cm and baby arrived 15 minutes later! Blimey did the midwife manage to catch it? Grin

JessieEssex · 17/04/2012 12:14

I was having 4 contractions every 10 mins and was 8cm when I got to hospital - I was really surprised (and pleased!) to be that far ahead. The pain got really intense about half an hour before I got to hospital.

MaryChalloner · 17/04/2012 12:16

I generally tried to leave when contractions were every 3 minutes as I didn't want to spend hours in hospital. With 2 of mine that did mean though that I arrived as I was at the pushing stage which was cutting it a bit fine! I have been lucky though and my longest labour (out of 5) was 7 hours I think.

(with my back to back labour I didn't manage to stay that at home that long as it was too painful).

Flisspaps · 17/04/2012 12:21

The MWs came to me at home when my ctx were 9-11 minutes apart but lasting for 3-4 minutes each, and very strong - they were similar in intensity to the ones I had with induction with a drip.

Wonder what your hospital would have made of those? Confused

LadyMaybe · 17/04/2012 12:38

With DS I went in at about then, it was painful, that's why I went in, I got to the stage where I didn't feel able to cope so well and knew I wanted to use a pool so thought it best to get to where they were.
I was 3-4 cms on arrival and got to 5cm with some gas & air after a couple of hours.
Go when you feel it's the right time. I know this sounds like an undefinable thing, but there will come a point when you feel that it will be better to go than to stay. That's when you go.

suburbandweller · 17/04/2012 12:42

I went to get checked over when contractions had been going on for about 20 hours and were 3 minutes apart - was 1cm. Went home to let things progress further and was back about 6 hours later when contractions were continuous and was in excruciating pain (couldn't move without help) - was 2cm. Waters broke about 4 hours later but DS didn't emerge for another 25 or so hours. Discovered at around 8cm that he was back to back, hence the agony!

So, ime timing of contractions were not a reliable indicator at all.

insancerre · 17/04/2012 12:44

3/4 contractions every 10 minutes that last a minute each

I didn't have many contractions but when they came they came like that^^
I went to the hospital and with DS i was 8 cm and he was born a couple of hours later but with DD i was 10cm and no time for any pain relief and she arrived about an hour later.

Ambrosius · 17/04/2012 12:49

I started contractions at 1.30am and at about 4.30 my contractions were pretty much running into each other so we went to hospital, got there about 5.30 and was 4.5cm had epidural about 7.30am, was 10cm at about 1.30pm ds arrived at 5.30pm in theatre via forceps and episiotomy.
Not exactly the water birth I had hoped for!

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 17/04/2012 13:41

My advice would be to go in when you feel you can't cope any longer at home.

Every mother, baby and labour is different.

When you're in labour and your contractions are coming regularly , ring the hosp and they will guide you.

But as soon as you can't take any more, get yourself in there.

Good luck! Keep us updated!

Bearhugs43 · 17/04/2012 13:42

After 3 babies i learnt to book a home birth - then you get the gas and air brought to you OP Grin and don't spend labour wondering when to get in a car or whether you'll be sent home....

You can always change your mind in labour if you really really need an epidural.

ghosteditor · 17/04/2012 13:48

I was 40+6 and had been told to go in when I had 3 contractions within 10 mins. I called the MW unit at that stage and they told me I probably wasn't very far along as contractions had only started 3 hours before. I called back after about 70 minutes to say that I really thought I should come in, and they reluctantly agreed. On the car journey in the contractions were 1 minute on, one minute off. By the time I was examined I was 8.5cm... I think the MWs keep you talking until you have a contraction and assess where they think you are from that Smile. I just had the TENS machine though so I guess I had an easy time of it!

Good luck Grin

MillyStar · 17/04/2012 14:02
