Hi, I'm 17+3 and have been suffering with this pain for about 6 weeks. Its getting worse and worse. It feels like I've been kicked really hard in the groin and the pain goes down my right inner thigh. Its fine when I'm lying still but if I try to lift my leg or walk it really really hurts. I had the same pain when pregnant with dd 11 years ago and it got so bad that by the end of my pregnancy I could hardly walk ..they told me it was sciatica, but I know it wasn't because I've had sciatica and it was nothing like this. It also dissappeared almost as soon as I'd given birth. My consultant has referred me to pain clinic but I'm still waiting ..I just wanted to know if anyone else is suffering/has suffered with this and could advise me on what it is and how to deal with it. I thought it might be spd but it wasn't overly painful when the doc pressed on my sp joint so don't think it's that now. Any ideas? It really is agony now

Aggie - Sorry bout my slang I see a rheumatologist because I have had pain in almost every joint you can think of. My fingers can swell and hurt so much that I cant brush my teeth,or grasp anything. I get pains in toes, knees, elbows etc. They haven't yet found out what the cause of these joint pains are. They have said that they believe it is not associated with my back problems. But I have never had these joint problems before my back started playing up.
There is a history of rheumatoid arthritis in my family. And my dad suffers from spondylitis and his symptoms are very similer to mine. Although his originates in his neck and mine in my back. The pattern and feel of the pain are all very similer. I have mentioned it to various consultants but they are reluctant to put a label on my condition at the moment.
Sorry bout whinging, i let it get me down sometimes coz i'm only 25 and can not think what the future will be like. Feeling better today although have slight sacroilliac pain, and big headache. Have a good day.

Hi girls. Sorry I haven't posted recently but it has been a chaotic week. I am now the proud owner of a crutch and have been signed off work! The SPD pain is getting worse and my GP said that I shouldn't be sitting/commuting etc so signed me off. They don't want me to take any other painkillers other than paracetamol although they have given me co-dydramol in case of emergency. As I'm sure you all know, paracetamol doesn't even touch the pain! Thought I'd share the best bit of advice I've had so far with you all - my physio told me to "keep your legs shut as much as possible till you give birth!" Now why didn't I think of that......
Anyway, don't want to moan as I think many of you are worse off than me. Big hugs to you pinkdolly, it sounds like you are having a really tough time. How is everyone else bearing up?

Hi Twirl - are the crutches helping? I have a pair in the attic that I've been meaning to take back to the hospital for ages (dd hurt her foot last year) but if they're helpful I might hang onto them.

Twirl , I'm so sorry to hear you've had to succumb to it. Do use the crutches - they can be a total pain but I've used mine for about 3 weeks now, and they have definitely stopped the deterioration. I have actually had days I can pad about the house without using even one.
Sit on the sofa with your feet up and get a hot water bottle is my advice.
Surprised at co-dydramol - is every doctor different? I wasn't allowed this while pregnant, but co-codamol was okay.
Ask your midwife about water therapy/ or failing that spend as much time in the bath as possible.
I remember how bored I got when I was off work and in pain - get friends to visit you and bring you cake and make cups of tea.

I'm finding driving really aggravates my pain at the moment (becasue my pain is mainly on the right the accelerator and brake hurt!) I only have to do short distances to get my daughter to childcare and then on to work, but it may be that which finishes me off!

take care

Thanks for the sympathy. I had a bad day yesterday but DH took DD to nursery this morning and I didn't wake up till 11am!!! Can't tell you how good that felt. Haven't really felt like baths (I'm a shower girl) but plan on trying that tonight followed by a hot water bottle and maybe half a glass of wine in front of Holby City. Half a glass is enough to take the edge of the pain for the evening - I'd highly recommend it every now and then!Grin The crutch does take a bit of getting used to but it does help you feel a bit more supported, specially if you get sudden stabbing pains. DD thinks it is her new toy so is happy to fetch and carry it for me. Keep hold of you crutches Aggie, you may find they keep you mobile longer...

Well wonder of womders I'm having a really good week! I went to the osteopath last thursday and she did some cranio sacral osteopathy - which was relaxing but didnt feel like it could possibly be doing much - she said she'd ring in a week to see how I was doing - I told her it would be hard to tell as the painkillers were helping, but she seemed to think I'd be able to ...she warned me I'd be sore for a bit and I was definitely sorer for a couple of days, but the last 2 days I've been much much better - I've only had to take painkillers once each day - this is better than I've been in weeks! It may be a coincidence but I certainly feel much better so I'm going to go back again next week I reckon- will have to be careful not to do too much and have a setback, but its tempting because I can walk pretty easily today :) here's hoping it lasts for a little while

Well the osteopathy seems to have worn off :( - but I did get a good week to 10 days of feeling much much better. She's away this week but I'm definitely going back next week to have another session - a weeks reduction of the pain, even if its not total relief was wonderful - I slept so much better too

Hi - is anyone still here? How are all you SPD sufferers? I'm really bored now I am off work but the plus side is that the pain hasn't got any worse over the past few weeks so at least the situation has stabilised for the moment. I guess being bored is a small price to pay.....

Calmriver · 01/04/2006 08:29

I did,

It was all the pressure from the baby. Also before I was even showing, all the ligaments stretching etc.

I even ended up with a swollen labia(one of your lip-type thing down there)a few days before DD was born,

Wasn't too embarrassing when it came to explaining it to the doctor at NHS Direct!

pinkdolly · 01/04/2006 14:31

Hi everyone,
Twirl- glad you are not feeling any worse. Sorry you are bored. I know the feeling. I have had to stop taking my girls out on my own as I am unable to push the pushchair any more. This week I went out with my mum on monday and friday and that was it. And even with her pushing the pushchair i was still very achey and tired when I got home. So am feeling very fed up at the moment.

I have an appointment with my mw on wednesday and my rheummy on thursday. And I hope they will be able to prescribe something to ease the pain more affectively then the paractemol and ibruprofen I have had so far.

How is everyone else coping btw? Has anyone found any good self help ideas to ease the pain?

Twirl · 03/04/2006 19:42

Hiya Pinkdolly. I hope the midwife/rhummy can suggest something stronger for you. How old are your girls? My DD goes mad when we don't go out for a day so I really sympathise with you being at home all day with them. Do you have a friend who could perhaps drive you to a library session or class each week to try and break the week up for the girls? The only self-help tip which I am still relying on when things get very bad is a glass of red wine and a soak in the bath - the effects only last a few hours though...

AggiePanther · 05/04/2006 10:10

Hi ladies,
Yep a glass of red seems to help as much if not more than the cocodamol :) But I can't have a drop at the moment cos I'm on antibiotics. Am off to the osteopaths again tomorrow, so hopefully should have some relief for a week again- fingers crossed
