Anyone had really bad groin and inner thigh pain during pregnancy?

Hi, I'm 17+3 and have been suffering with this pain for about 6 weeks. Its getting worse and worse. It feels like I've been kicked really hard in the groin and the pain goes down my right inner thigh. Its fine when I'm lying still but if I try to lift my leg or walk it really really hurts. I had the same pain when pregnant with dd 11 years ago and it got so bad that by the end of my pregnancy I could hardly walk ..they told me it was sciatica, but I know it wasn't because I've had sciatica and it was nothing like this. It also dissappeared almost as soon as I'd given birth. My consultant has referred me to pain clinic but I'm still waiting ..I just wanted to know if anyone else is suffering/has suffered with this and could advise me on what it is and how to deal with it. I thought it might be spd but it wasn't overly painful when the doc pressed on my sp joint so don't think it's that now. Any ideas? It really is agony now

I'm with you girls... I am having serious pain down there too. Nothing officially diagnosed but I think a combination of SPD, sacro illiac joint and to top it off a bit of a hernia! I am almost 37 weeks so not long to go now but at times the pain is excruciating.

I have had some pain since about 20 weeks but was able to continue on with work and general life. It has been considerably worse the last few weeks with the most difficulty being getting up for those middle of the night trips to the bathroom and over the last couple of days I have been having a lot of trouble just getting in and out of bed. My dh has had to start helping me in and out of bed now and there is no turning over in bed anymore Sad.

Last week the people at work kicked me out and told me not to come back until I felt better - all in good spirits though - I think I was causing them pain just watching me try to get around!

My obstetrician has told me the best cure is to have a baby so for the next couple of weeks I am just taking it easy and waiting for bub. I really feel for those of you who still have several weeks (or even two trimesters!) to go - I hope you all get some good help with physio and have supportive care.

AggiePanther · 02/03/2006 13:04

Thanks International girl ...sorry to hear your in pain - hopefully giving birth will sort it all out for you - I remember in the postnatal ward all the other mums were hobbling about complaining of sore bits and I felt amazing because I could walk! Good luck with it :)

Thanks AggiePanther Smile I am hoping that the aches go pretty quickly after birth. I never had this level of discomfort with my previous 2 pgs so am finding it all quite draining. Must be 'cause the other 2 were girls and this one's a rambunctious little boy!!

Here's hoping baby comes early, safe and fast. Wink

Hi everyone,
Thought I'd join you as all I seem to be saying over the last few weeks is "my fanny hurts".
I had sacroilliac joint dysfunction with dd2 and was on crutches and painkillers. Since then I've been diagnosed with a burst/worn disc at base of spine. I've had a rough couple of years been on all sorts of meds, not being able to picu up my girls or sometimes even get out of bed. V.depressing watching my dh rolling about on the floor playing with the girls while I could only watch from the sofa.
Anyway...
Since becoming pg have actually felt better, till the last few weeks. My back is playing up again and this time I have pain in my bitz. I never had this before. It hurts when I walk or pick up heavy things (like my dds).
I am managing, sort of on paracetamol, am used to being in a lot of pain,so this is ok at the moment.
Not really wanting to say too much regards other painkillers as my rheumatologist threatened me with steriods when I saw her last month (dont really want to go there).
My crutches are still here ( had to use them many times over the last 2 years), really hoping I dont get that bad this time.
Hope everyone is ok and not in too much pain.
P.s- anyone heard a loud crack if open legs to wide (sounds dirty but not really!) just wandered?

pucca · 02/03/2006 19:08

I was diagnosed with SPD with my dd (now 2.3)and was given the belt which didnt really help, i am now 16 weeks pg with my 2nd and it has started already, but isnt pubic pain or inner thigh pain as such, mine is a loud series of clicks everytime i take a step, and is my hip which seems out of place very painful and seems worse if i lift dd or if i sit for a while or continuous walking and the turning in bed is horrible, the clicking has stayed with me since dd was born but GP said it was nothing, but i dont think i ever recovered from it the 1st time around Sad

Is this SPD again or something else? havent spoke to MW yet, i am seeing her on Weds so will mention it then.

TIA

Bump

Frizbetheexpansionset · 02/03/2006 19:48

I had very bad pains, mainly down my right leg during my last pregnancy, which was put down to the femeral nerve trapping a lot due to pelvic movement??? according to the quack anyway? it caused me no end of pain, to the point where I'd be on the floor at work in tears, doing the exercises the physio gave me to relieve the trapping.....which kinda worked, but you couldn't pre-empt the trapping.......anyway after I'd given birth I booked in with the local osteopath, who treated me in two sessions, popped everything back into the right place and this time round (I'm 40+3 at the moment, where is that baby!) I've had no bother whatsoever, so would highly recommend an osteopath to everyone.

mogwai · 02/03/2006 20:58

Aggie, yes, the airbed was a godsend.

We have a kingsize bed, I shipped husband off to the guest bedroom and stuck the (single) airbed in the middle of our bed. It helped my leg cramps, uneven weight distribution and back pain.

The best thing was the help it gave me to turn over during the night. I could hook my heel over the edge of the airbed and start turning, then the airbed did the rest, as the air changed place.

I didn't sleep well after 20 weeks, but this made the last eight weeks bearable. I even had a few unbroken nights!

mogwai · 02/03/2006 21:00

Frizbe, I'm interested in the idea of an osteopath. My baby is eight months old now and I've been seeing a physio but I find it impossible to set the time aside to do the exercises properly.

How long after the birth did you go?

Twirl · 02/03/2006 22:36

Pucca, it sounds like it could be spd - this nasty thing has many guises. You poor thing. Get your doctor to refer you to physio for an accurate diagnosis. I click/grind sometimes when I'm walking but it is my pelvis rather than hips. Sorry, no loud cracks when I open my legs Pinkdolly (perhaps it's because I'm keeping them tightly closed!!! Grin).

InternationalGirl · 03/03/2006 06:43

I hadn't even thought of an osteopath - thanks Friz - might have to check out what we have down here in the way of an osteopath if the pain doesn't subside quickly after birth.

AggiePanther · 03/03/2006 11:01

Hi all :) Pinkdolly and twirl, there's now 3 of us here from the july thread so hopefully we'll be able to compare notes all the way :)
As for osteopath - I went to see one and she was lovely - can't say if what she did helped as I also had physio, a support belt and an increase in pain killers at the same time - so its hard to know which one helped most - probably a combination of all of them . However the cranio sacral osteopathy was very relaxing and I'll probably go again just for that ..also it was such a relief to have somebody say 'ah yes, I can see you've obviously got a problem with this joint here, its not moving correctly and this bit here is out of line too..ooh poor you that must be causing a lot of pain' Made me feel supported and like somebody understood and could help. I'd definitely reccommend it :)

Hiya,
Well the pain that i said I was coping with, has for the last few days been getting quite severe. Like I want to cry. I have co-codemol here (not prescription), and tramadol, which is what I usually take when not pg. I rang my doc and asked if I could take any, considering the extent of pain I been in. He said absolutly no way! He says neither of these are safe for the baby, which confuses me as I know some of you have been advised to take them!
It's usually the latter half of the day that I get bad and thats after walking around. I have taken to walking v.slowly and can only take small steps. The amount of pressure I feel is awful (feels like my bits are gonna crack (sorry bout the pun)).
Just having a rant really, hope everyone else is well.

AggiePanther · 05/03/2006 01:28

Thats odd pink dolly because it was my obstetrician who recommended cocodamol and said we could move up to tramadol if necessary ...perhaps you should ask for a referral?

Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time by the way ....not surprised if you can't take pain killers :(

OP posts:
babylily · 06/03/2006 10:28

Lots to catch up on..
Twirl - being off work last time was fine - (apart from the days I couldn't move to get a drink but I just sat and read a lot) - but this time, with a toddler in tow, I think it'e easier for me to stay in work for as long as I can - (although saying that, I now need to get taxis to and from work, and am sitting here in agony at the moment and longing for my nice comfy sofa)

Aggie - I find cocodamol such a nightmare with the constipation thing, but it is taking the bite off the pain fairly well at the moment. I'm now counting down to seeing my consultant in 3 weeks and begging for something stronger.
Has anyone heard of using TENS for the pain?

We took our dd swimming yesterday and I found standing in the water or floating about just lovely as the pain almost vanished (no swimming obviously!) I was offered sessions in a pool as therapy last time and didn't take it - this time it isn't on offer - typical!

AggiePanther · 06/03/2006 11:05

babylily - yes know what you mean about the constipation Blush my physio recommended prune juice- I think she said aldi do big cartons of it but its not that cheap so she used to freeze it in ice cube trays till she needed it - have made a mental note to go get some soon..very soon!!
Have heard of tens for the pain but don't know how successful it is sorry ...also heard of acupuncture being used - does anyone have any experience of that??

OP posts:
jofeb04 · 06/03/2006 11:35

Hiya Aggie,
I suffered with SPD from about the sametime period as you are. 5months after my dd being born, im still having physio (sorr, not the kind of thing you want to know).
However, if you want to CAT me, i can pass you all the advice ive had (far too much to say on here!!).

babylily · 06/03/2006 14:28

Aggie - I had half a tin of prunes in my porridge this morning and am hopeful it is the cure!
I've also heard of acupuncture being good for the pain - it's just a case of finding someone who is willing to work on a pregnant woman. There is a midwife in my area who does it, but is typically impossible to get an appointment with!
I had reflexology last time which helped but only for such a short time it didn't seem worth having again.
Cranial Ostepathy is alos meant to be good - but it's the £30 a week it'll cost that's putting me off as I'm trying to save as much as possible to fund the unpaid 6 months of my maternity leave.
I will stop moaning now Smile - the sun is shining, my painkillers have kicked in and I've only got about 22 weeks to go if I have another elective cs. Hooray!

pinkdolly · 06/03/2006 14:36

Hiya,
Aggie -i've got a fussy doctor. Having suffered from SJD in a previous pg I know there is something else I can take. I think I was on either co-dydramol or dihydrocodiene (something like that) during my last pg. My problem is I dont really like taking painkillers (i've taken enough of them over the last couple of years).
I dont like to admit defeat, and although the pain is bad, it's not all the time.
I have an appointment with my rheummy in April and if I can hang on till then I know she'll help me. She was so nice when I saw her last time.
With regards to Tens. I have one of these, but they wanted me to use it for an hr, 4 times a day to have any affect. When you have two toddlers to run around after thats not so easy.
The other thing is i'm sure you are not allowed to use tens until later on in pregnancy as it could bring on contractions. (better check on that).

AggiePanther · 06/03/2006 19:29

Hi jo .. sorry to hear you're still suffering :( I'm hoping that this will disappear when I give birth (like last time) but I have been warned it might not ...like babylily I'm counting down the weeks (19 to go!).

Hope you manage to get something sorted pinkdolly - its a long time to wait til april :( is there any chance they'll bring it forward

OP posts:
pinkdolly · 06/03/2006 19:50

Aggie - My rheummy really was lovely and said should I need an earlier appointment then just to get in touch. My area of concern is that she obviously knows much better than the doc about my problems, and last time I saw her she was like,
" Dont worry, if the pain becomes a problem we can start you on steroids, because we know their safe for the baby"
They might be safe but it sounds a bit extreme to me. On the one hand I have doc saying nothing more than paracetemol and on the other my rheummy talking about steroids.
Although she did mention about hydrotherapy, which sounds lovely.

I guess my main problem is that, the pain I have been in since being pg with dd2 has been unbearable. Not being able to pick up dds, not being able to get out of bed. DH has even had to carry me to the toilet on occasion. Since becoming pg, i've never felt better. The pain seemed to go and everything has been great. Until the last few weeks and the pain is back, not as bad yet, but it's the same pain, with a few new bits.
To tell you the truth, i'm scared! I'm so happpy i'm pg, but really scared. I spent so many months crying with the pain (physically and emotionally), it was horrible, and I dont want to go back there again. My girls have never understood why I cant do the things that daddy does. And my oldest is always asking me if my back still hurts, or if i'm still poorly. It upsets me. I love my girls to bits, they and the new baby are my world. And i'm scared of not being able to play with them again!
I know I should have thought about this before I got pg, but my desires for more children are so strong. Sorry for being so miserable.

AggiePanther · 07/03/2006 09:37

Awww pink dolly (((hug))) that sounds awful - I've never been bad enough to have to be carried anywhere (not that DP would be able to lift my lardy arse!) and luckily the pain went when I had DD...I really feel for you :(

You say you see a 'rheummy' does that mean a specialist in rheumatoid arthritis? Do you have that too? The only doc I'm seeing is an obstetrician.
