Did your dog know...

My usually very independant dog has taken to following me around over the last two days, if i'm doing something she'll sit with me leaning against me, and keeps trying to get on my lap (she's no lap dog, but a very fluffy GSD!)

I'm 11 weeks.

Do you think she knows? What you your experiences with pets?

I'm not sure if she's completely aware of it - because who knows with the self-obsessed little wretch - but my cat has been acting very differently towards me.

She's usually very dismissive of me and isn't interested unless there's something very obviously in it for her. But lately she's been following me around and coming up onto my lap/belly for a cuddle. Something she has never done in her four years.

vix1980 · 14/04/2012 16:39

Both my cats have been like this, 1 is a super clingy female anyway, the other is an 18 year old male who hasnt wanted anything to do with me since the day i got him over 12 years ago, at 6 weeks he started coming up trying to sit on my knee, hes since taking to sleeping right next to me on the bed (much to dp's dismay) and when i stroke him he now drools like he suddenyl loves it.

i do think they can sense more things though, either that or theres something really wrong with him Grin

Enfyshedd · 14/04/2012 16:45

My cat's been more attentive to me since I got pregnant - she usually sleeps in mine & DP's room anyway, but if I get up in the night for the loo she'll walk down the stairs in front of me rather than run past me when I'm halfway down in kamakase mode. Just half a flight at a time, but she'll stop and look around as if to check I'm ok. On a couple of occasions, she's also sat on her scratching tower and sniffed my stomach and rubbed her head against my bump when I've been stood there to give her a fuss.

bettybat · 14/04/2012 16:47

I love that bit in Marley & Me, when the wife is pregnant and they're all asleep with Marley on the floor on her side of the bed...suddenly he leaps up and starts barking, and then the wife wakes up and - oh, waters are breaking, all systems go etc Grin

MrsSnaplegs · 14/04/2012 16:48

Yes mine used to try and sit on my lap - she's a Rhodesian ridgeback so not really a lap dog Grin
She also did it to a friend who had 3 failed IVF cycles and had announced they weren't going to try again - 6 weeks later they announced they were expecting having conceived naturally - shocked when I said I knew because I the dog Grin

StickingLaboutin · 14/04/2012 16:55

The only time my old cat used to bring in animal 'gifts' was when I was pregnant. Cue a nauseous, tired me screaming at DH to "shut the bloody door, she's bought us a mouse again."

I should add that DH hates mice and DCat never dropped dead animals, they were always still alive :)

Loislane78 · 14/04/2012 17:28

This is sooooo cute!!! I'd love a dog but can't for lots of reasons. I reckon they do know and how gorgeous to think your pets are trying to look after you and bump, v cute thread :)

nicki1978 · 14/04/2012 17:33

My friends dog was always very protective of me and followed me around, sat with and even barked at people he knew that came near me, lol.

Then 9 mths ago he owted his owner by doing same thing with her, lol 😄

CupOfBrownJoy · 14/04/2012 17:35

My dog didn't have a bloody clue.

I took him for a walk this morning to take my mind off the pg test waiting for me in the bathroom.

The bugger ran away from me twice and embarrassed me in front of other dog walkers as I had to go looking for him Blush

Got back home, tested, got a BFP Grin

So either he didn't know, or he knew and didn't care Smile

EggsMichelle · 14/04/2012 17:42

I don't know if its my animals, or the way I have been reacting towards them, but the dog has stopped jumping up at me and our youngest cat has started to show a bit more affection. I think it's more likely that my cautiousness around the dog and feeding the cats meat cause I feel sorry for them is more likely the reason for change in behaviour!

My dog has no idea whatsoever! Even when my bump is wriggling away and I say to him, what's this (wondering if maybe he could hear it), he isn't in the slightest bit interested! He is a weimaraner.

MrsJohnDeere · 14/04/2012 17:51

Yes, both my dogs were very, very over-protective, particularly out and about on walks (was quite annoying actually), and much clingier at home.

When the Dcs were little and I was feeding them (whether bf or ff, made no difference) they both ran away and hid with tails between their legs. Really didn't like it. No idea why. Then would come back and be their normal selves one feeding was over.

HaplessHousewife · 14/04/2012 17:56

With DC1 my cats used to sit like sentries on the back of the armchair and were definitely different around me. DC2, the novelty had obviously worn off and they didn't react at all ? maybe because they knew it meant another small tormentor was coming Grin.

PetiteRaleuse · 14/04/2012 17:56

I'm around 11 weeks too. My female cat picked up very quickly each pregnancy and at about 5 weeks started sleeping on my belly at night each time. She is also very clingy and follows me around the house, watching me go to the loo, have a shower, and right now she is sat on my desk on my mouse mat. When, in a few minutes, I get up and go to the sofa, she will follow me. She's normally very independent, but a PITA when I am knocked up. The other thing she does only when I am pregnant is if I cry out in pain (if I walk on a toy in bare feet, or bang my elbow, or whatever) she runs up to me and bites me Shock

My male cat last time round only noticed when my belly started moving. When the baby kicked he kind of prodded my tummy where it moved Grin maybe he thought it was a mouse.

My male dog is a little more sensitive and is just starting to become clingy now at 11 weeks ish. He will, if last time is anything to go by, become a little less bouncy and a lot more careful round me as the weeks go on.

DonnaDoon · 14/04/2012 18:09

My dog knew, He stopped jumping on the bed for a morning cuddle and is generally extra well behaved and loving.

signet2012 · 14/04/2012 18:43

My dog is very suspicious of my stomach and when he lays with his head on my stomach (only part of him that fits on my knee as he is quite big) he occasionally jumps up looks quizzically at me and then my stomach and then me again!

Florin · 14/04/2012 19:36

Since being pregnant one of cats who Is already very friendly had become incredibly clingy of both my husband and I has to be with us at all times preferably on our laps. He gets quite upset if we don't let him sit with us. He also started bringing in presents of mice for a while.

SarryB · 14/04/2012 20:12

My lovely border collie has started burying things. If she gets given a chewy-treat, she'll either try and stuff it down the back of the couch, or bury it under the blanket in her basket. It takes her a good 20 minutes before she's satisfied that she's hidden it.

A close friend's dog goes nutty now when she sees me - I've known the dog for about 4 years, and in the past couple of weeks, she just goes mental, and won't normally rest unless she's leaning on my feet, or on my lap. Luckily she's only small, so it's ok!

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow.

Katuk82 · 14/04/2012 23:30

Weirdly, when pregnant DH & I went to a couple of aquariums. The fish all swam/grouped to wherever I was stood. After about half a dozen tanks it started to get a bit creepy.

iklboo · 15/04/2012 00:20

Obviously when I was pregnant, not DH. Blush

Moodykat · 15/04/2012 00:25

My dog was also very protective of me when pregnant. He used to growl at DH if he sat next to me!

MickeyTheShortOne · 16/04/2012 21:38

My dog doesn't have a clue.
Mind you she is a Gordon Setter ;) I think they are generally renowned for being quite stupid?! :o

rexymepixie · 16/04/2012 22:37

A rescue basset I was fostering knew..... she wouldn't let anyone or anything near me, got VERY protective, she knew before I did! Sadly she had to go :-(
