My usually very independant dog has taken to following me around over the last two days, if i'm doing something she'll sit with me leaning against me, and keeps trying to get on my lap (she's no lap dog, but a very fluffy GSD!)

I'm 11 weeks.

Do you think she knows? What you your experiences with pets?

I've been wondering g about this for a while! My parents dog alfie a golden retriver has wanted to cuddle I to my belly since about 8 weeks pregnant!

My female cat who was my hubbies cat and couldn't stand me, she used to give me the evils if I even sat next to him! Is now my lap cat, she's super cute when I suffered all day sickness at the beginning shed sit waiting outside the bathroom door for me! Now at 20 weeks she loves cuddling in with her paws on bump but doesn't half jump when baby moves:-)

Im sure they ca sense something cos im only just properly showing!

Our schnauzer knew before us with all of my pregnancies. He would get v protective of me whilst out walking to the point where it got embarassing trying to pull him off pensioners & small dogs. He also calmed right down which just isn't his nature!

He was also fantastic when I had my 3 m/c - he would come & sit with his head on mine or dp's lap & was vvv loving - not something he is normally with dp! He really helped to give us both a lift & get back to normal.

Now he has 2 dc who adore him (though its not always mutal as his beard is just the right height for pulling yourself up to stand!) Both said his name as their first word - not mummySad

Weirdly he did pee over me a few times when i pg with ds but never with dd!

A friend of mine has two dogs and when I was visiting her very early in my pregnancy they were all over me-wanting cuddles, heads on my belly, snuggling, even trying to lick my tummy through my t-shirt! They are sweet dogs but not normally anywhere near that affectionate, especially to people who aren't their own family. My friend said, 'God, normally they're only like that with pregnant women!' and I had to swiftly change the subject...!

BoffinMum · 18/04/2012 16:01

I also have bionic smell, and I can sniff out ill-health in complete strangers, distant hidden poos, people's levels of nutrition, other women's time of the month, whether they have cystitis or not, whether people are dyslexic or not (really!). I can also smell rain, whether mammals are fertile and whether something is wrong with my car.

It is both a blessing and a curse.

BoffinMum · 18/04/2012 16:03

It's a milky, salty smell when someone is pg, and gets more intense in hot weather, btw.

BoffinMum · 18/04/2012 16:03

Dyslexia smells a bit like intense ketones.

BoffinMum · 18/04/2012 16:04

Cystitis is a bit like a weak chardonnay.

BoffinMum · 18/04/2012 16:05

Fertility smells like a faint but well-rounded fart.

Car problems are hot plastic/slight oily tang.

Rain just smells really full, like the air is swollen.

BoffinMum · 18/04/2012 16:06

I could also sniff my mother out of a pile of 100 people, I am sure.

HorseyGirl1 · 18/04/2012 20:13

Hi to the lady who wondered if the cattle could smell her pregnancy as she walked her dog. They are actually following you along because of the dog. Please PLEASE don't ever go into a field with cattle with a dog. This can be dangerous, cattle can view dogs as a threat and can charge both you and your dog. Think this happened to David Blunkett at some point so this applies to everyone else too, not just us preggos! Take care out there ladies xx

mammanetta · 18/04/2012 21:26

my 19 y.o. cat died 2 months before I conceived DD :( so sadly she never 'knew' I was pregnant

Blackpuddingbertha · 18/04/2012 21:52

On the day my mother went into labour with my older brother the dog (lab/retriever cross) followed her everywhere. She was very much my dad's dog and usually treated my mother with a certain aloofness. She wouldn't even let her go to the toilet on her own. When she did the same thing when I was due my mum got her bag packed and called my dad before she even had the first twinge.

lisa1968 · 18/04/2012 22:11

When i was expecting my son, we had a gorgeous Staffie called Cassie.
When I walked her she pulled like a train, and when I came in from work she would jump all over me.I think she knew I was pregnant before I did!She suddenly stopped pulling on her lead and started walking next to me and didnt jump up any more, and once my bump grew she would lie next to me on the sofa and put her head on my bump!!
She loved my son to bits and was so protective of him.

dancingwithchocolate · 19/04/2012 00:57

BoffingMum: v. interesting re smells. didn't oliver sachs have a case about a man who woke up one day and could smell like a dog (as in had the capacity to smell things with the intensity of a dog, not actually smell like a dog)?

dancingwithchocolate · 19/04/2012 00:57

That was a typo, but I rather like boffingmum

BoffinMum · 19/04/2012 09:43

Boffingmum Grin

That's interesting. I will look it up. Forewarned is forearmed if I am about to start going around sniffing people's bottoms Grin

BoffinMum · 19/04/2012 09:59

Have looked it up.

I can do the colour differentiation thing too, always have done, and can also taste things very precisely - know what's in every dish. Can hear complex combinations of instruments at will in my head and pick small sounds out of a jumble.

I think I hadn't appreciated how unusual this all was.

WaitingForMe · 19/04/2012 17:08

One of my (male and neutered) cats knows. He's usually very independent but keeps coming to check on me and has looked at my stomach a few times. I don't think he knows what is going on but he's curious.

His brother isn't at all different. I possibly wouldn't think anything of the first cat had ones behaviour not changed.

NarkedPuffin · 19/04/2012 17:28

All of you super smellers would be very useful in the zombie apocalypse.

BoffinMum · 20/04/2012 11:10

I am sure I could smell fetid flesh a mile off. Count me in.
