If you miscarry at 7 weeks or so do you need a D&C? Maybe TMI

Need to ask if you need a D&C if you miscarry at 7 weeks or so. I took pg tests at the weekend and was faint line pg then another this morning which was definately a BFP! But this afternoon I have massive stomach pains and lots of blood loss, it doesn't seem like a little "bleed" I feel like its all over. I've never had this happen and I really am not sure what to do. Not booked in yet - do I go and see Dr or just wait and see.

I can't believe it. I so wanted to be pg and I was soooo happy. Don't know how to tell DH. Have to go now as I am in work and supposed to be teaching. Trying to keep from crying as I don't want my class to know whats wrong.

RRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

you shouldn't have to undergo a d&c. the doctor/hospital won't be able to do anything yet if you are miscarrying, but they may want you to go in in a week or so to make sure nothing has been retained.

i am so sorry for you I have suffered an early miscarriage and it's just horrible

Sharklett {{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}
My advice would be to get down to your nearest EPU if there is one so that you can have a scan to see what is going on.
Where do you live?

Avalon · 08/02/2006 14:15

Sorry to hear this, sharklet.

I miscarried at home at about 8 weeks. Saw doctor but didn't have a d&c.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/02/2006 14:16

Sorry to hear this, it does sound like a miscarriage.

If you go see your local EPAU, they can double-check that you have eliminated everything. If so, no D&C is necessary. Also, if you get a negative pregnancy test in a few weeks, that generally shows everything's been eliminated.

Miscarriages really really suck, but a D+C is not always necessary - I've had two miscarriages, no D+C. (miscarriage, DS1, miscarriage, DS2)

welshboris · 08/02/2006 14:16

I didnt, they checked my bedpan and everything came away naturally

Im so sorry hun, massive hugs to you x

HellKat · 08/02/2006 14:18

Have you tried ringing your local fetal health unit at the hospital? They'll scan you and let you know what's happening. I've suffered bleeding and chronic pain with my current pg and have been told so many times that it's another mc (I've had 4 previous ones). It might be nothing, just your body getting rid of "old" blood or it could be indeed a mc. Best bet is get in touch with them. They're truly lovely.
good luck hun.
Thinking of you.

Sorry to hear about this I had a m/c at 6/7 weeks and just let things happen (like a slightly heavier than normal period) and then went to dr a couple of weeks later to get it down on my records in case it turned out to be a recurring thing.

starlover · 08/02/2006 14:21

I don't think they will scan straight away with heavy blood loss, especially if it is bright red, fresh blood.

scotlou · 08/02/2006 14:22

It's a good idea to go to the EPU. I had 3 early m/cs (and 2 healthy births!) so I really sympathise. If your blood group is rhesus neg you'll need an Anti-D injection - so it's best to find out. Very sorry for you.

yes, they will scan you... but it may not be straight away is what i was trying to say.
especially if they are reasonably sure that you are actually miscarrying.

starlover · 08/02/2006 14:26

if you are miscarrying there is nothing they can do. and from sharklets description it sounds like she is

i went in with bleeding and wasn't scanned for 2 days!

hornbag · 08/02/2006 14:28

Sorry to hear this. I had a m/c at about the same stage sharklet -went to the EPAU at the first signs of bleeding, they scanned me which showed m/c was inevitable in my case. Didn't need a D&C but did have blood tests to check falling levels of ?(...forgotten, minds gone blank...)

starlover · 08/02/2006 14:28

hgc?

scans must be one of those things that depend on where you are!

HellKat · 08/02/2006 14:29

If it's heavy enough or you're in pain, you can either a) go straight to A&E or b) get an appt at the epu and they will scan you (either same day or the next depending how busy they are). I spent alot of time there last year with my 4th mc and been back & forth every week for the last 6 weeks aswell.

How are feeling?

sharklet · 08/02/2006 14:35

Sneaked out of class - gave them some practical work to do. I feel very weak and dizzy and a bit sick and shaky - probably shock.

I don't know what An EPU is? stupid as I am. Am at work in London (Pimlico) right now - but live in Wiltshire (nrst hospital to home is Great Western) Might wait and see if I feel worse and see whether to leave it, go into somewhere here, or wait til I get home.

I feel like its probably my fault as I had a horrible chest infection and took decongestants and antibiotics so that probably didn't help matters. I wish I had known earlier.

I just want to curl up and cry.

Call this number 020 7737 4000 and ask to be put through to the EPU.
They are really sweet and will advise you what to do

Go home FGS.

The decongestants and AB's have nothing to do with it.

There are women out there who do Heroin and Cocaine when they are pregnant and still give birth to perfectly healthy babies.

I am sorry this is happening to you.it happened to me at 7 weeks as well.

I was PG four months later and now have a healthy 4.5 DS.

serenity · 08/02/2006 14:40

I think it depends where you go, but definitely check out the EPAU in your local hospital. I had a m/c at 6.5 weeks, they scanned me whilst I was bleeding (I'd actually lost the bulk of things in the toilets waiting to be seen ) but they also did the blood tests over a couple of days to check the hormone levels. I was lucky as I had a complete m/c, my friend who would have been at a similar stage didn't, and things carried on over 3 mths before she asked for a D&C.

sorry that you're going through this Sharklet

serenity · 08/02/2006 14:43

X posted with a lot of people then.

I agree with the others. Leave work Sharklet, go home or get it checked out, but take some time for yourself.

lucykate · 08/02/2006 14:43

i think you should at the very least take yourself home and rest. go and see your gp, tell them whats happened and get them to refer you for a scan if possible to confirm whats going on. even with the bleeding, there is a chance it is ok. i bled til 23 weeks with dd.

the other way they can tell whats going on is by doing a blood test to check your pregnancy hormone levels, if they repeat the test in a day or two it will show if the levels have gone up or down, as at 7 weeks there might be little to see on a scan anyway as its so early.

beckybrastraps · 08/02/2006 14:44

I think you should leave work now! I started a miscarriage at work (also teaching)on a Friday. I saw my GP that day, who said it probably was a m/c, wait and see. On the Monday I went back to the GP, and went to the hospital for a scan on the Tuesday. I did not have a D and C or whatever it's called.

And it is not your fault at all. Tell someone and go home (or to GP/hospital). Get a lift. Go now!
