Oh it's horrible isn't it? I'm taking ranitidine on the worst days. It was the worst thing about my labour last time! I couldn't tell the midwives for some reason, so suffered with it all through the pushing bit. It disappeared as DD came out. I'll be taking precautionary medication beforehand this time!

mousebacon · 02/04/2012 20:44

It's just grim! I've ended up drinking milkshake / eating ice cream when I haven't got the mucogel (which is vile btw) but it's not exactly healthy is it?!

belindarose · 02/04/2012 20:57

What is mucogel? Sounds disgusting! Ice cream much better.

littlemissnormal · 02/04/2012 21:00

To my total horror I've found that chocolate makes it worse Sad

mousebacon · 02/04/2012 21:12

Yes! Chocolate is the worst! Top tip: switch to cream cakes!

It just seems to last for hours I feel like I could breathe fire!

Go to the docs & get some omeprazole. Works an absolute treat for me, otherwise I'd be sick & coughing with the heartburn constantly.

creativepebble · 02/04/2012 22:06

One word: GAVISCON!

StarlightMcEggsie · 02/04/2012 22:08

Can you take omeprazole in the third trimester?

StarlightMcEggsie · 02/04/2012 22:09

Gaviscon is the texture of cum and doesn't work very well anyway.

creativepebble · 02/04/2012 22:30

OMG StarlightMcEggsie! I am so going to struggle now!

fromheretomaternity · 02/04/2012 22:33

Gaviscon gaviscon gaviscon

(three words)

fannybaws · 02/04/2012 22:57

Love hearts work very well

Snowy27 · 02/04/2012 23:01

I HATE heartburn. I'm waking up every 2 hours in the night with it- and last night I'd run out of gaviscon (which doesn't work that well anyway!) I just wanted to have a little cry because I'm exhausted and can't sleep and feel like I'm swallowing/regurgitating acid.

Yuck!

bonbonpixie · 02/04/2012 23:22

Zantac is good. However can't buy it without a prescription. So annoying, have to send DH into buy it for me!

Flisspaps · 02/04/2012 23:30

Gaviscon is indeed that texture, it tastes wrong and I can't bear to look at it after the white-liquid-splashing-out-of-a-hose-cartoon advert

Either ASDA own brand heartburn relief tablets (fruit ones are nice) or Love Hearts, Refreshers or Parma Violet type sweets - its the calcium carbonate (chalk) that does the neutralising.

MyleeneCrass · 02/04/2012 23:44

Severe Heartburn type pain can be a symptom of pre eclampsia. Check out the other symptoms and if you have any of them call your midwife ASAP.

seeker · 02/04/2012 23:52

Make ginger tea- grate fresh ginger and pour some boiling wqte over it. Let it get cold, strain off the liquid and put some in ordinary tea. Tastes lovely and in my experience was wondrful for heartburn. The best over th counter stuff was called Remagel - I was finding half empty packets in coat pockets for months after mine were born!

Thanks amelia I'll give that a go!

Guess what woke me up an hour ago? I wonder if there's a love heart delivery service in my area? I'm going to give those a go Smile

Ah, good, the beastly amelias messages have been dealt with swiftly. Moving on...
Hello mousie it's HORRIBLE isn't it? My philosophy with this pregnancy was that I was suffering enough with GD and stabbing myself nightly with insulin and clexane, that I'd be blowed if I spent the entire pregnancy burping and worrying about what I was about to eat and its burning consequences.
So when the heartburn started appearing at 11am and not going even with several gaviscon doses, I complained to the Dr on my high-risk team, and she promptly prescribed me Ranitidine which works pretty well. Every so often I get a day where it doesn't seem to have touched it, but that is usually when I've forgotten a dose and am trying to take it after symptoms have started. It's once a day and reduces the amount of stomach acid produced.
Don't suffer - go to your GP or raise it with your MW at the next appt.

mousebacon · 03/04/2012 07:44

Well hello lovely lady Smile

Yes, amelia caused quite a stir in the wee hours but MN have got rid, thank goodness! Thank you for the tip, am seeing the mw next week so will ask about it then.

How are you? Hope you're ticking along nicely I'm just counting down the days till mat leave. Sadly, all the recent sunshine has disappeared so I'm happy to hang on a few more weeks till it's warm again!

Mouse x

I've been using gaviscon. Seems to work most of the time. MW doesn't think there is anything else I can use.

I'm struggling to sleep because of it Sad

seeker · 03/04/2012 08:18

Please don't let my ginger tea tip get submerged!

Missgiraffe1 · 03/04/2012 10:14

Like Saggybaps Omeprazole worked like magic for me when Gaviscon was barely touching it. Strongly recommend it.
