So here I am, armed with my lists from all the other threads. I'm on the hunt for babygrows with the poppers at the crotch and down the leg because I'll be nervous nelly for the first few weeks. I also know to look for the ones with the inbuilt scratch mits because I'll struggle with them too (and they're not that easy to come by you know)...so now I'm stuck again. What blinking size? My baskets (spread on 3 sites currently) are 0-3 months - is that right? What if baby is less than the 7.5lbs - do I need to buy 0-3 and newborn to cover both? Oh please say no....I'm unravelling with the pressure.
On the plus side I did find a nightie for labour on the Mothercare site which I won't be too hot in and will cover my decency Hmm another hurdle over...

Next babygrows have scratch mits built in

I didn't bother with newborn sizes (good job really as both mine were around the 9lb mark)

you could always get 1 pack in each size and take both

Firawla · 17/03/2012 17:28

i would get newborn as most 0-3 goes up to 12lb or mothercare even 14lb so will be massive! newborn or upto 1 month should be good, which is to 10lb and should fit okay but still gonna be big if they are under 7.5lb. unless ur expecting a big baby i wouldnt bother bringing the 0-3 anyway - either newborn or upto 1 month
the scratch mit ones come as standard on mothercare i think so mayb try there?

girliefriend · 17/03/2012 17:30

You need to get 'newborn' sizes as 0-3 mos will prob be too big for most newborns but don't get loads as they grow very quickly!!!

You know you need vests and babygrows right?? I only ask as I was clueless about this fact until about a week before my dds birth Grin

MrsCog · 17/03/2012 17:31

I would buy a few newborn - DS was born 2 weeks ago and even though he was 7lb 12oz, the newborn stuff mostly hung off him - some 'tiny baby' stuff even fitted him! I think the shops have engaged with vanity sizing even for newborns! And a big yes yes yes to inbuilt scratch mits - normal ones just don't stay on. I've found the Sainsbury's baby grows & vests to be fab.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 17/03/2012 17:32

Better too big than too small, i'd take 0-3 and if you are worried then 3-6. You really wash baby clothes before using them the first time so you can't return ones that are too small.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 17/03/2012 17:32

*should really

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 17/03/2012 17:34

(you can always buy newborn size once baby is born if needed)

ImpYCelyn · 17/03/2012 17:35

I would get newborn or 1 month sizes as well. DS was in his for several weeks, and he was 7lbs12 at birth. 0-3 looked ridiculous on him.

If you don't mind 2nd hand you could always look on ebay for some newborn stuff. It'll have been worn so little that it'll be in great condition.

SwivelHips · 17/03/2012 17:37

Yip I've found the scratch mits ones on Mothercare and Next, not a lot choice as I need unisex. Blimey I didn't know each site/size has different birth weights, this is a minefield.
I might get a pack of each...I haven't seen any 0-1 month though....off to empty my baskets and start again Smile

Next does 0-1 month - oh happy days. Yes I've got a very detailed list from previous threads, so I've got vests (envelope), socks etc all covered Thanks

Yes, was going to say I got all my 1 month stuff at Next or Boots (for the points).

However, for babygrows I think Next is better quality.

susiegrapevine · 17/03/2012 17:56

M & S have up to 1 month size but I reckon unless you have a really big baby newborn will fit. Unless your me and have a 5lb 12oz term baby and your mum has to run out and get tiny baby for him as he was swamped by newborn and kept getting tangled. But don't worry you can't predict every outcome so as long as someone is there to rush out and buy and quickly wash a tumble dry a smaller/bigger size you'll be ok. Plus as long as your 0-3 stuff is washed and ready you can always send someone home to get it if needed!

SwivelHips · 17/03/2012 18:05

Just emptied all my shopping baskets, there's a Next 2 mins away, and a Boots (for the points) so I'll start again tomorrow. Thats it exactly, you can't cover every outcome; can just imagine either DH or my mother running around trying to get baby clothes with me giving the orders. Blimey. [crosses fingers for average baby]

I had the 1-3 months babygros because large(ish) babies run in the family.
dc1 was just under 7 pound and totally lost. dc2 was over 9 pounds and fit in perfectly.

MadameChinLegs · 17/03/2012 18:12

I find Next stuff great quality but very long. Great, as it lasts, but not so much help with a newborn. Go for newborn, or, if in doubt, they do "up to 1 month" which is smaller than 0-3.

I got Newborn and 0-3 and put a couple of each in the bag. DD was 6lb 12, and swamped by her NB stuff, so DH popped out and got three vests and three gro's in Tiny Baby, which lasted a good fortnight.

Dont take tags of anything until you put your LO in it, as if needed, you can return and swap for the next size up. Or gift on.

MadameChinLegs · 17/03/2012 18:14

Oh, and if you have an H&M near you, their baby stuff is brilliant and they do weird 'middly' sizes like 2-4 months etc. I had a little pair of grey trousers in newborn with the feet in and they were DDs first outfit and fitted well then and lasted til 2months old. They also do soooo many things that are unisex and in bright colours. I have got DD some bits form the boy bit too, as they aren't stereotypical 'planes and trains' boy stuff.

CalamityKate · 17/03/2012 18:17

I always found baby clothes to be bigger than the sizes on the label.

Both my newborns were nearly 11lb and I'm fairly sure they still fitted in "Newborn" size. Maybe not for long, but they fitted.

xlatia · 17/03/2012 18:19

We were fine with 0-3 months and Next does fab romber suits with built in scatch mitts, poppers all the way down the legs and really nice quality!

Happenstance · 17/03/2012 18:19

I have bought Next 0-1 month for the hospital bag they are up to 10.5lb nice and thick and have built in scratch mitts, my DD was very long as a newborn and even though she only weighed 7lb she didn't fit in newborn baby-grows

xlatia · 17/03/2012 18:19

romper suits, even

ardenbird · 17/03/2012 19:15

I feel your pain! I'm packing a range of sizes. I found that the sizes can vary even with the same name. We've got newborns from Mothercare and from Tesco, and the Tesco ones are significantly smaller. In fact, two different Mothercare ones (both part of "gift packs") are a good 1-2in different in size. So I've put in 2 of the small newborns, 2 of the larger newborns, plus one 0-3 in case she's big. I figure that buying more of the bigger ones is okay, as she'll eventually fit into them if she doesn't to start, but I'm trying to not get too many really small ones as if they don't fit they never will.

I find it so hard to buy clothes for someone I haven't really met yet! :)

MadMonkeys · 17/03/2012 19:29

Sainsburys do the ones with scratch mitts attached - very reasonably priced.

KatAndKit · 17/03/2012 19:38

Primark do 2 sizes of newborn - up to 7.5lb and up to 10lb. I've bought a couple of packs of the basic white vests and sleepsuits in the up to 10lb size. Most of the nicer stuff I have got is in 0-3 but I figured in the first month, vests and sleepsuits would be fine.

In the unlikely event that the baby is way too small for the up to 10 pound size, Asda will still be open 24 hours a day selling smaller baby vests.

Kayzr · 17/03/2012 19:40

I would get newborn but also a few 0-3 too. My DS2 was 10lb 5oz and never fit into any of the newborn we had got.

marshmallowpies · 17/03/2012 19:51

All my newborn clothes so far are 'nearly new' as I've been given SO much stuff, haven't needed to buy any new stuff.

However none of the babygros have built in mitts, so think I'm going to have a sad scratchy baby. I did buy some mitts but of course everyone says babies wriggle out of them and lose them everywhere. Am just going to have to manage with what I've got, I think...when I've been given so much stuff I don't think I can justify spending money on more clothes!
