What size baby clothes for the hospital bag? I am soooo confused (again)

So here I am, armed with my lists from all the other threads. I'm on the hunt for babygrows with the poppers at the crotch and down the leg because I'll be nervous nelly for the first few weeks. I also know to look for the ones with the inbuilt scratch mits because I'll struggle with them too (and they're not that easy to come by you know)...so now I'm stuck again. What blinking size? My baskets (spread on 3 sites currently) are 0-3 months - is that right? What if baby is less than the 7.5lbs - do I need to buy 0-3 and newborn to cover both? Oh please say no....I'm unravelling with the pressure.
On the plus side I did find a nightie for labour on the Mothercare site which I won't be too hot in and will cover my decency Hmm another hurdle over...

Mothercare new baby up to 10lb fit my 8lb6oz DS well for the first few weeks. What about those baby bundler things like baby nighties? That way there are no poppers to mess with and they'll fit all sizes until you know how big your baby is?

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 17/03/2012 20:04

In my hospital bag (last week!)I had a packet of Early baby 7 1/2lb and pack of Newborn 11lb. My son is 7 1/2lb and 49.5 cm and the Early baby is a great fit, some room to grow. The Newborn is ridiculously huge! Cue Dh off to the shop for more early baby.

beccabubbless · 06/06/2012 19:42

girliefriend vests AND babygrows?!

gnocci · 06/06/2012 20:01

DS was 9lb and wore mothercare newborn (up to 10lb) for a few weeks.

gnocci · 06/06/2012 20:03

becca yes! babies wear a vest under their babygrow!!! We always got the litle capped sleeve ones.

cairnterrier · 06/06/2012 20:10

Swivelhips Next do next day delivery if you order before 9pm. You could always order some more once you know what size you will need.

I would recommend having available newborn and 0-3 month vests and baby grows. Take 2 of each size to the hospital with you - if you have a quick discharge then no worries, you probably won't need them all, if you need to stay in for longer then visitors can bring in more for you (and wash the ones that you have).

PS re the scratch mitt things, I've never used them (not even the ones on the end of the arms), I just very gently nibbled off any long fingernails. Sounds horrific but much less likely to catch any skin doing it this way, rather than using nail clippers.

And THIS is why I joined mumsnet!!
I'm not being funny, but who is supposted to be telling me things like this?!?!

bitbewildered · 06/06/2012 21:46

Both of my DC were too small for Newborn size (both around 6lb) and DH had to rush out and buy Tiny Baby ones.

You just can't plan for every eventuality! Grin

PrincessWatermelon · 06/06/2012 22:30

becca I asked this v question today. What am I meant to use vests for? I've been given loads, but figured I'd just use babygros as she'd get cold legs.

Are you really meant to put them jn a vest and then the babygro?!

Sheepasaurus · 07/06/2012 07:33

Matalan does built in scratch mits and are very good quality. Asda's 'first size' fits up to 9lbs.

Dillydollydaydream · 07/06/2012 07:41

I've always used newborn sized baby gros at the beginning, my DC were 7.3, 8.1 and 7.9 though. When my babies are first born they're so used to being squished up they didn't stretch their legs out so there's empty space in the legs of the baby gros!

Dillydollydaydream · 07/06/2012 07:43

Re the vests, little babies find it harder to regulate their temperature, and they (whoever 'they' are!) advise one extra layer or a baby to what you would wear.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 07/06/2012 07:48

Yes a vest and babygro.

The rule of thumb is that they wear whatever you wear, plus one extra layer.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 07/06/2012 07:50

I did lol @ 'who is supposed to be telling me this' Grin

I remember thinking this when I was pg with ds1.

livismum · 07/06/2012 08:22

Next have changed what they call newborn or 0-1 it's now "first size"
I was a bit naughty when I had DD1 I bought some tiny baby babygrows and left them in the packet in the hospital bag in case I didn't need them so I could return them (only cheap ones, god I'm tight!) as it was she was 3 weeks early so at 6lb4 I needed them ...... Whispers she wore them unwashed..... Shhhhhh don't tell anyone! Grin

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 07/06/2012 11:18

why do you need babygrows and vests? Blush

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 07/06/2012 11:19

Sorry just saw someone's answered that! So you'd put them in both at the same time then?

freelancegirl · 07/06/2012 11:32

It's so complicated isn't it! Hey Swivelhips, do us a favour and post this list you are amalgamating will you? I have yet to start copying and pasting one together (am just over 33 weeks) and it would be really handy to have yours to go on :)

I am aware that the baby should wear vest and babygros together (unless it is really baking hot...?) but unsure as to how many I should take into hospital and what size. I bought a 'starter pack' from Mothercare the other day - the only thing I have so far - and it only includes one vest, two babygros, two hats and two sets of scratch mits - useless I am told as they fall off unless attached. So I have added some little socks too, but ditto I have been told on the falling off issue.

DanyTargaryen · 07/06/2012 11:48

BECAUSE THEY NEED ONE MORE LAYER THAN YOU! READ THREAD!

Christ I'm hormonal today.

Paperclips · 07/06/2012 13:04

I agree the need for vests is obvious! Do you guys really only wear one layer? You must have huge heating bills! I wear more than one layer most of the time in this god-forsaken cold grey country, except when it is boiling. It's June now but it's nowhere near warm enough to be swanning around the house in just one layer. And I'm a full grown adult sitting drinking tea. Seems obvious that a little cotton babygro is not going to be warm enough for a tiny body without something underneath.

The bit that confuses me is- by vests- do you mean those little short sleeved body suits?

nickelbarapasaurus · 07/06/2012 13:12

DD was too long for newborn stuff.

if you put in 0-3,it'll be fine - might be a bit baggy, but if you've not got both, then it's better not to buy both iyswim.

when they're born, okay hospitals are boiling, but they really do need a vest and a babygrow in the first few days and a hat. (the mws tell you when it's okay t stop wearing the hat)

to those just above me, DD is now 6 months and she is just in a babygrow. (she gets too hot)
agree before 4 months definitely vest as well.

PrincessWatermelon · 07/06/2012 14:00

Ooo...I'm so sorry for my ignorance Dany and Paperclips. Forgive me for never having had a baby before!! But I'm glad I'm in a safe place where I can ask questions and not be judged. Grrr..... And yes, at 37 weeks I'm hormonal too!!

Thanks Nickel for the comment about before 4 months it being necessary. I have the little bits you sent me all washed and ready in her drawer! And need to get the TENS machine out and figure out how it works. I think of you often and your kindness in sending them too me. How is Eleanor? And you?

nickelbarapasaurus · 07/06/2012 14:05

we're great, thanks!
it's so hard to remember life before she got here Grin

i can't believe you're so close now!
Grin

(i say 4 months based on my own experience - basically once they can shiver and complain they're cold!)

Onlymydogunderstandsme · 07/06/2012 14:10

I have packed Next up to one month baby gros and vests as they say up to 10lbs so hoping they will be ok! I do have a few 0-3 but they say up to 14lbs and that seems massive on a 7/8lb baby. My midwife has said she doesn't think baby is particularly big though she thinks 7/8lbs although I know it's not an exact science!!
