please advise me if possible, I don't know what to do. I'm 11 weeks pregnant , ivebeen concerned that all my pregnancy symptoms vanished, everything , smell sensitivity , sore boobage, I can lie on my tummy, nausea, even the tiredness to some extent. I've been waking at night with sharp pains across tummy and cramps last night , today bright red mucousy stuff sorry tmi but relevant. So do you go to a and e? If it's the weekend they can't scan you can they? Do they just sen you away to let it happen? I don't want to be kept in for consecutive hcg etc and have toddler and sick teenager to look after? What happens?

Sorry to have to ask and all that! Sad and teary, hormones probably .

Thanks in advance

I would go to A & E or at least call your midwife and speak to them about it. I wouldn't risk not doing something. Hope you are OK.

housedilemma · 09/03/2012 17:43

So sorry you are going through this. Do you have you midwife's number? Can you call her for a chat and see what she can do?

FWIW, I had slight spotting at 15 weeks, I called my midwife who arranged for an OB/GYN registrar to meet me at A and E.

I don't think they could do a scan then, but she did check my cervix and told me it was closed and that it was probably a cervical type bleed. My daughter was ok and she's now 3.

It could be that your symptoms are just disappearing as you are nearing the 12 week mark perhaps.

Hope that everything will be ok.

KatAndKit · 09/03/2012 17:44

I'm sorry you are going through such a worrying time.

I personally would not recommend going direct to a&e unless you are in a lot of pain or having very heavy bleeding. They won't be able to do anything for you.

If it is a miscarriage it will probably ramp up into heavier cramps and bleeding over the weekend. You have a choice of how to manage it. Some people choose to wait it out at home, some people don't cope with that and go into hospital. If you stay at home and it turns into a miscarriage, you'll need to be seen and scanned to make sure it is complete so you will need to see a doctor and probably get referred to the hospital. I very much doubt they would do serial hcg at 11 weeks, an ultrasound is usually what they would do.

If it doesn't turn into a definite miscarriage over the weekend you'll need to get seen to on Monday. The people you need to see are the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, who should scan you. You will need a referral though. Phone your midwife today/tomorrow and ask to get a referral.

Hopefully a scan will reveal a viable pregnancy. It's normal to lose symptoms after 10 weeks and there are other reasons for a bit of bleeding. If it isn't viable but you aren't miscarrying by yourself, they will talk you through your options (wait it out at home/surgery/pills to bring it on)

Hoping it isn't a miscarriage and you will be back with good news for us soon.

housedilemma · 09/03/2012 17:48

Oh and usually your midwife or another in her team are on call 24/7, so don't worry about calling on a Friday evening.

Ellovera · 09/03/2012 17:49

Ok thank you that all sounds sensible . I've not seen my midwife just yet as I moved dr surgeries only this week and my notes not transferred yet , I'll call surgery in am and hopefully can sit tight until Monday.

Thank you very much for helping me. Really appreciate it .

Do get it checked out and have more than one scan unless it is very clear. It's possible to lose a twin so don't be too keen on the surgery or pills side of things.

Ellovera · 09/03/2012 17:52

I reckon my symptoms have been going since about seven weeks I def should have more by now! Feels like they are fading? If not then this is the easiest pregnancy ever! We will see I guess , thanks again

Could you ring the new surgery (they will have an emergency line) and explain the situation and get the midwife's number. I am sure they willl help you. Good luck.

mamij · 09/03/2012 17:53

Sorry to hear that. If you are worried over the weekend then just go into the maternity unit (I'm guessing yours has a triage like mine). Fingers crossed for you.

If you can't get a scan - you may be able to book one privately for tommorow. I booked a scan yesterday with my local babybond clinic for tommorow and they gave me a list of appointment times online to choose from.

Not ideal as they won't be able to give you follow on care if something is wrong, but it may give you some peace of mind if everything is ok.

It's £99 for a dating scan.

Joygirl78 · 09/03/2012 20:01

If you do miscarry, then there is not much a&e can do unless you have massive blood loss. Miscarriage cn be very painful. Go to chemist and get the strongest pain killers you can,
Like the ones with co codamol in them over the counter. Have a hot water bottle, rescue remedy, chocolate on hand and someone to hug. Get big pads too. Hugs - I've been there if that is indeed the outcome, - but as others have said, it might not be and a referral to early assessment unit next week is a good plan.

browneyesblue · 09/03/2012 20:23

If you are in pain, call the out-of-hours doctor. You can find the number by calling your local surgery - the out-of-hours number will be on their answering machine.

The out-of-hours doctor will be able to advise you, and prescribe pregnancy-safe painkillers if necessary.

Most hospitals can't scan over the weekend, but a few can. UCLH do early pregnancy scans on Saturdays via their A&E department. The on-call OBGYN at A&E can also check your cervix to see if it is still closed.

Wishing you all the best. x

Ellovera · 09/03/2012 20:36

I'm having lots of pains but I'm happy to sit it out and see epu next week whatever the outcome . Thanks and sorry to those who have bad experiences. Is a complete loss of symptoms a telltale sign do you think?

OP posts:
housedilemma · 09/03/2012 20:42

No, not always - my sister said that her symptoms totally went by 8 weeks. Her son is fine and 18 months now.

Hoping everything turns out well for you.

Ellovera · 09/03/2012 20:50

Ok thanks good to know. I'm sure it's nOthing to worry about :-)

I found NHS Direct pretty good when I was miscarrying, they advised me what to do. I guess it'll depend on the facilities at your hospital as to what they'll do. I did end up in A&E on a sunday but was pretty well looked after. If you start bleeding a lot or are in a lot of pain then do go to A&E, if you are miscarrying at 11 weeks you could need monitoring. Really hope that this is just one of those things. I did bleed and cramp a bit in this pregnancy but all was fine. Good luck x

PinkSpottyBag · 09/03/2012 21:10

Ellovera, I had a miscarriage last year when I was about 8 weeks pregnant. It started with little smears of blood when I went to the loo. Over the course of 24 hours I started to get back pain and some cramping and then the bleeding got worse to the point that I had to wear a pad. A hot water bottle and some paracetamols helped with the physical discomfort. I then spoke to the Early Pregnancy Unit at the local hospital, after I had phoned my GP and explained what was going on. The EPU arranged a scan a few days later where they confirmed that I had miscarried. I had to do a test 10 days later and let them know that it was a negative result. With DC3, 3 years ago I had some early light bleeding/spotting and then a huge bleed at about 7 months and it was a healthy outcome. So I suppose what I am trying to say is don't think it is definately a miscarriage the only think that will reveal that is time I am afraid, but resting and lots of fluids will certainly not harm.

Ellovera · 09/03/2012 21:46

Thank you puzzletree and pinkSpottybag . So sorry to hear that . I hope maybe the advice on this thread helps others wondering the same things. Thanks all your time and help is truly appreciated .

Could be worth calling NHS 24 if it's really painful . Sorry you're going through this.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 10/03/2012 22:06

I hope you are ok OP. {{{hug}}}

puzzletree · 10/03/2012 23:57

I'd second runnervt, if you're in a lot of pain get medical advice. Hope you're ok x

KatAndKit · 11/03/2012 04:52

I agree, if the pain isn't manageable then don't leave it till Monday. Especially if there isn't anything else happening as you don't actually know it's a miscarriage yet and it could be something entirely different that needs seeing to. If you are still in a lot of pain during today, go to your out of hours doctor or even A&E if it is particularly bad.

Hope you are ok
