I cut it out completely this time around which is perhaps a bit OTT but i'd had a miscarriage and didn't want to 'blame' it on that IYSWM? With my first pregnancy I was having a cup of filter coffee (half caffeine) a day and diet cokes.

bushymcbush · 18/02/2012 20:04

No but I limit myself to 3 cups of coffee a day.

melliebobs · 18/02/2012 20:06

I haven't cut down or cut it out. But there again i don't think i drank caffeine excessively anyway plus Decaffe tea is rank anyway!

Choufleur · 18/02/2012 20:06

Cut down but couldn't give it up. I need it to get me through an afternoon at work during first trimester.

I took part in a caffeine study actually and had to record what I drank and certain food that I ate and had regular scans to try to see if caffeine intake affected baby's growth.

CharliesMummyMeg · 18/02/2012 20:07

i did try to limit myself when i was pregnant did better somedays than others... cut it out when i was breastfeeding, when i realised oh crap shoulnt be having caffine!

I love coffee, but drink decaff so I can use my caffeine allowance on chocolate instead :) I think up to 200mg a day is ok.. but don't quote me on that!

CharliesMummyMeg · 18/02/2012 20:25

does it actually cause harm to unborn babies?

OP posts:
Choufleur · 18/02/2012 20:28

The results of the study I took part in concluded that you had to drink a lot (I think more than 5 cups of coffee a day - but don't quote me on that) for it to have any negative affect no babies.

The study was done by university hospitals of Leicester.

AnaisB · 18/02/2012 20:28

I have a cup or two of tea a day or sometimes a coffee. If I have a filter coffee I will only have half a cup (probably a bit OTT). When I was breastfeeding it made no difference to DDs sleep and I sometimes drank whole cups of coffee at a time (just the way I roll). I had a decaf last week and it was intensely unsatisfying.

CharliesMummyMeg · 18/02/2012 20:30

Well i deffo didnt drink 5 or more cups of coffee so all good!!

DialMforMummy · 18/02/2012 20:31

I cut down on coffees but my intake of chocolate has dramatically increased, so it's probably even!
My pregnancy book says caffeine is ok in moderation.

MrsRV · 18/02/2012 20:35

Don't drink tea or coffee anyway but was slightly addicted to diet coke before I got pregnant (although used to try to limit it to 1 can a day). Fell pregnant and decided to go cold turkey on it. Not just because of caffeine but because of it just generally being full of horrible chemicals! So I don't really have any caffeine apart from chocolate x

PotteringAlong · 18/02/2012 20:36

Nope!

I went right off it for the first trimester but limited myself to a cup a day when i got my taste for it back.

Petrean · 18/02/2012 21:10

No... But I cut down to 1 Cafe Nero latte and 2 instant coffees a day.

Joygirl78 · 18/02/2012 21:18

No, but cut down on espresso. Still drinks tonnes of tea though. Diet coke is full of nasty chemicals and I certainly have avoided that

Penny2012 · 18/02/2012 21:32

Cut out all tea/coffee/cola but still having chocolate in moderation! :-)

pixiepud · 18/02/2012 21:49

I never wasa huge coffee drinker anyway but now i've cut it right down, i barely ever have a coffee now unless i want to treat myself when i go round a friend or relatives house. I'm a cola drinker, i drunk quite abit before i got pregnant but when i found out i limited myself to maybe 1 cola drink a week, sometimes i'll be naughty and have an extra (thats just me, you can have 2 cans a day but i prefer not to)
I would cut it out completely after reading a couple of articles that caffeine intake can cause child behaviour problems, but as i don't know how true that actually is, i still have my weekly cola. Oh and chocolate, you can't not have chocolate!

RealLifeIsForWimps · 19/02/2012 00:20

I drink a fair bit of tea and coffee but don't really eat chocolate, so basically, no I haven't.

I think the caffeine risks (to the extent that they believe they exist) are mainly 1st trimester related anyway. I found I was "off" coffee at that stage anyway.

Diet coke I can never face when I'm pregnant.

blacktreaclecat · 19/02/2012 07:37

Went decaf for tea (rarely drink coffee) while ttc. Still have chocolate and an occasional diet coke

Twinklebum · 19/02/2012 08:29

I have 4 dc with my second I craved red bull and would have a couple of cans every few days and also drank diet coke as my "main" drink I didn't know about the limit caffeine advice untill I was 6-7 months. My 2ds was 6ib 3 and although not an overly light baby my others were 7.8, 7,6 and 8.13 do I do think the amount I had did have an effect

startail · 19/02/2012 08:33

I cut down, but I hate cold drinks and I'm crap at self denial so I certainly didn't give it up.

Choufleur · 19/02/2012 08:35

That was the study I took part in. Interesting to know the full results.

madaboutmadmen · 19/02/2012 08:41

i have one cup of 'proper' tea a day to wake me up first thing then I have decaf tea or coffee the rest of the day. can't tell the difference with tea, need to get the right brands with coffee. Also coffee shops do decaf coffee so you can still have Lattes / Mochas etc and they're just the same Smile
