I drink about 8 cups of tea a day so had to change to decaf but I really can't tell the difference. Decaf cola on the other hand is horrific so I limit myself to one can of the full-fat real McCoy and really enjoy it.

ArcticRain · 19/02/2012 09:27

I cut it out during the first trimester following a MC but by the third I was back to my normal intake of about 4 cups of tea .

Do people cut it out while breastfeeding too ?

SootySweepandSue · 19/02/2012 09:30

I cut it out after a MC. Prior to the MC I was drinking about 5/6 cups per day as I was having a lot of stress at work. Don't know if it's related or not. I switched to decaf tea. I found giving up caffeine very hard. Am dreading this if I get pg again!

Flisspaps · 19/02/2012 09:35

Nope.

DonkeyTeapot · 19/02/2012 09:38

I heard that caffeine inhibits iron absorption, and I tend towards low iron levels anyway, so thought it safe rto reduce my caffeine intake.

I switched to decaf tea and coffee - tea has to be Tetleys though, all the other decaf ones are horrid - and coffee has to be Kenco for me, haven't tried any other decaf coffees.

I always used to avoid caffeinated drinks after about 5pm anyway, but got to really enjoy having a coffee before bed, so have carried on with the decaf. Now I find that if I have caffeine any time in the afternoon, it really affects my sleep.

cerys74 · 19/02/2012 09:40

I cut down from fifty six cups a day to two (one in morning, one in evening). I think as long as you're not exceeding 200mg a day on a regular basis then you're fine.

Asinine · 19/02/2012 09:40

I gave it up, not for pregnancy, just to feel better. After a few weeks I had more energy, less moody, less sweaty and skin better. I drink decaff ground coffee instead, if I have caff at a friends house I can feel myself going jittery and hyper and I don't sleep as well.

ToxicToria · 19/02/2012 09:43

I terrible morning all day sickness which coffee made 10 x worse even if anyone else was drinking but I still had the tea

toddlerama · 19/02/2012 11:04

I couldn't stomach it at all for about 17 weeks, then wanted it again but definitely less than usual.

SausageSmuggler · 19/02/2012 12:44

I cut it out completely first time round, this time i've just cut down.

balkanscot · 19/02/2012 16:16

I have always been one-cup-of-coffee/tea-per-morning, no other cups of tea/coffee during the day and certainly not in the evenings (just don't feel like it). Since I have become pregnant I pour coffee into a mug at work (during our communal coffee breaks) but only pay it lip service, as I end up throwing most of it away. Can't stand decaff versions of either tea or coffee. In fact, coffee-wise, only Illy or Lavazza will do.

I gave up on alcohol completely though. Just a personal choice I made.

therumoursaretrue · 19/02/2012 16:44

I havn't cut it out, but have definitely cut down. Not fussed on coffee at the minute anyway...think I've had 2 cups so far since finding out I was pg. Limiting tea to about 2 cups a day, used to have about 4 plus 2 coffees most days so I'm pleased with myself. If I have chocolate or diet coke, I'll only have 1 cup of tea that day. Was so pleased to read in my guidelines from the midwife that I'd have to eat a whole 200g bar of chocolate before I hit the caffeine limit...probably bad that I see this as permission to eat lots and lots of chocolate!

mammanetta · 23/02/2012 22:02

only ever have one cup of tea or coffee in the morning and possibly a cuppa mid afternoon - I stuck to just one tea or coffee a day and it was fine. Didn't think one cup a day would harm anyone - but having none whatsoever would have been hard!

Aworryingtrend · 24/02/2012 08:16

I've switched to decaf at home and work but will have one or two lattes from a coffee shop per week.

Loonybun · 24/02/2012 09:26

I cut down in the first 12 weeks when the risk of miscarriage is higher and if anything happened I didn't want to think "if only I hadn't done that" even tho it probably wouldn't have made a difference... Now I'm 24 weeks and its creeping back up again. I drink truck loads of tea and de caf tea just tasted like dish water to me.

I had dd 9 years ago and they never even mentioned it then and she was fine, and not a low weight either which is the other thing they say it can cause - she was 7lb 8 at 37 weeks (un caffine related induction)... My sil drank masses of coke the whole while with her ds and dd and they were whoppers of nearly 10lbseach... Although maybe it was all the sugar!!

TimothyClaypoleLover · 24/02/2012 13:28

Never even occurred to me to cut out caffine in first pregnancy. Although am not a massive coffee drinker, 2-3 cups a day. This time round I have cut down caffine intake slightly in that I have one caffine coffee and the other 1-2 is caffine free. As someone else said though, my chocolate intake has gone up so probably hasn't made any difference at all!

Alligatorpie · 24/02/2012 13:53

I have cut down. I usually have 2 large coffees and chocolate during the day but now I try only have a second up every third day or so. I am also drinking weak instant coffee. I drink herbal tea throughout the day.
With my first, I only drank decaf.

SachaF · 24/02/2012 14:03

I cut it out for both pregnancies as it made me feel sick. As did a lot of things.
I now normally limit myself to 2 cups a day, before 1pm, otherwise I sleep badly and feel dehydrated. But then I had hardly any caffeine for 3 or 4 years so going from nothing I could definately feel the effect!
A good strong coffee or can of Dr Pepper before a run really helps wake me up!
