Reading other threads it looks like there are lots of teachers having babies in 2012!
Anyone going to join me?
I'm 5 weeks - first baby, due date 20th October - and I teach Early Years!

Hello. I'm just 5 weeks pregnant and a Reception teacher. I work in a lovely, supportive unit (part tine) and our Head isn't too bad so should be ok. Working in reception can be quite physically demanding compared to other year groups I've taught and I'm not looking forward to squatting on the tiny chairs with a big bump either! I'm just trying to work out when to finish for mat leave. I'll only be about 27 weeks when we finish for summer so that seems very early to finish. On the other hand, I could then just take the whole year off and then the children wouldn't be messed about too much.

Hi i'm a reception teacher and 5 weeks today too! Celestia I would go longer if you are able to - I'll definitely be trying to hang on til Oct half term. I had quite a few weeks before my DS was born (I went off at the Christmas hols and he was born mid Feb) and I went slightly crazy just sitting around waiting, folding and unfolding little vests!!!
I'm wondering if they will even put me in my own class in Sept or just use me to do groups/ppa - it would save the interruption to the children, I guess it will depend on the heads grand plan I suppose. Even if it does create a bit of disruption, I think the kids manage that much better than we give them credit for...
Haven't read through the rest of thread but hi to everyone else - good idea for a thread! :)

Yes! I'm a teacher & on my fifth! Was not happy at first but now I'm thinking a year off! Whoohoo.Grin
Lots of my friends on Facebook are having babies as well.

TartyMcFarty · 25/02/2012 22:03

Secondary English her too, due about the same time as you, OP.

Peasandyoghurt, I'm lucky not to suffer with morning sickness, but a colleague of mine has been known to throw up in the bin and carry on teaching Shock

After having DD I went back to a demoted post (my choice) on a 0.5 timetable. It feels like a different job and I'm enjoying it.

TartyMcFarty · 25/02/2012 22:05

As for Ofsted, funchum, I'm very thankful now that we had ours back in October.

My school last got ofsted in 2007 but got outstanding including for teaching and learning so everyone is fairly blasé that we're not top of their list. I'm new there since September and feel like it would just be my luck if they turn up when I'm pregnant and either a) haven't announced it yet as too early, i.e. in the next three weeks or b) when I'm knackered and enormous and can't be particularly useful. And of course they CAN turn up if they want, regardless of what they've said in the papers. 5 years is a long time for any government body to trust a bunch of teachers to cope without their helpful interference....

howiwonder my dd is a mid feb baby too and I finished a couple of weeks after the Xmas hols. I LOVED having that time to relax etc and would have the same again this time as is at school now. I'll be going back to work the following September so going off early won't really make much difference in terms of mat pay.

howiwonder · 26/02/2012 18:07

yeah Celestia I know what you mean about having that time to relax, especially if your dd is at school, it will be good to get the rest while you can! I just remember kicking myself at the end of my mat leave thinking if I had of stayed on a bit longer, I could have had that time with ds at the other end of the mat leave.

I think I might go back for a few weeks in July so I can get paid again over the hols - bit cheeky but know we will need every penny!

Celestia · 26/02/2012 19:48

You don't have to go back in July in order to be paid for the summer. With dd I put my return to work date as the first day of the summer holidays. I got paid as normal at the end of aug, before starting my part time contract on 1st sept.

howiwonder · 26/02/2012 20:03

thanks celestia thats really interesting - i suppose that makes sense now you say it. just wonder if it would piss my head teacher off though! she is not very receptive to whole maternity thing -not openly, im sure she'll be nice to my face when i tell her, but i know from her bitching to me about other people getting pregnant and the affect it has on the school.

Celestia · 27/02/2012 07:43

I'm very lucky as it was my head who suggested I do it! The only thing you may feel uncomfortable with is the teacher covering you won't get paid for the holidays.

Celestia · 27/02/2012 07:48

How are you feeling? No sickness for me yet but then it didn't start with dd until about 7 weeks. The tiredness is starting to kick in as are the sore boobs.

How old is your ds?

howiwonder · 27/02/2012 20:19

you do sound like you have a great head! im still quite a new girl in my school so just feel like im still getting to know mine. i suppose i have plenty of time to decide about when to go off/come back....
no sickness here yet, but same as you that started around 6 or 7 wks last time and it was just the odd bit of nausea rather than full on sickness. i do feel tired, and i think my appetite might be slightly down - but nothing major to report. these early days are weird arent they?! i just want to fast forward the next few weeks and know that all is well.

my ds is just 2, how olds your dd?

Celestia · 27/02/2012 21:01

Tme seems to be standing still! I'm counting down to my first midwife appointment at the end of march. It seems aaaaages away though!

My dd was 5 last week. We had originally wanted a smaller age gap but I had pnd which wasn't diagnosed until she was 3.5. I'm trying to think of all the positives of having a larger age gap!

howiwonder · 27/02/2012 21:10

sorry to hear about the pnd - what a long wait for you to get support. i think thats a nice age gap, shes old enough to really be involved and understand whats happening. my little man will probably be well put out at not being king of the castle any more!

i havent got anything like a midwife appt booked in - just made an appt with the gp for thurs so i guess she will get the ball rolling and tell me what to do. we have recently moved to this city so im not really sure how it all works here.

Hello all Teachers Having Babies!
Is everyone enjoying the summer holidays? I have survived my first week off for the summer. I'm now 30 weeks, first baby.
Have lists and list of things I want to do this summer to prepare for baby (buy travel system, buy cot, have double glazing fitted (don't ask!)) but it gets to about 4pm and unless I am out of the house I just crash out, so tired - is this normal?
Going back to work in Sept for 3 weeks and due to finish work at 38 weeks.

Had a 4D scan and was told again that we are def having a girl - which is great and I'm all for team pink but resisting buying dresses and pink clothes, blankets etc just in case I do have a surprise boy, much to my mum's annoyance!

Is anyone else planning on spending this summer preparing for arrival of an Autumn baby??

Congratulations Hamp!

This time last year I had a 4 month old, this summer is much more fun (with better sleep!) with a 16mo.

Just give in to the snoozes, you owe it to your future self to spend as much time on the sofa/in bed as you can!
