Teachers Having Babies

Reading other threads it looks like there are lots of teachers having babies in 2012!
Anyone going to join me?
I'm 5 weeks - first baby, due date 20th October - and I teach Early Years!

OP posts:

I'm pregnant with #2 and a secondary science teacher. I'm due middle of october I think, but really need dating scan to confirm it. So far so good, but MS has only jst started and I was sooooo sick last time (in the sink in the classroom in a lesson once!).

I'm going to work as long as possible this time round as I only work 3 days a week anyway, hopefully upto 38 weeks if I can. Last time I got all appointments signed off no problem (but the HAVE to let you) but people complained about it and I had no fewer duties or jobs. This time I'm going to say that I'm not going to do a form if I have bad MS again as I had to run out so many times.

Good luck everyone x

Hi, I'm a secondary History teacher 29 weeks, so also due in May. I didn't really get morning sickness (thankfully, can't believe my luck) but the constant toilet trips and bone crushing exhaustion.

Many of my pupils haven't noticed yet! either that or they just think i am really greedy...

duvetfan · 16/02/2012 21:42

Sorry that should have said:

Hello Smile I'm a secondary Computing teacher and I'm currently 21 weeks pregnant with my first. I'm glad the OP has started this thread - its interesting and helpful to read other teachers' experiences - thank you!

musicalmrs · 17/02/2012 08:34

To all those due around May - rjteach? pickledpeppers? dreamingofanallotment? karatekimmi? duvetfan? Are you all finishing for ML at Easter? I am - and am counting down the weeks - only 6 left! (I only teach a set number of weeks a term.. got started early this term to ensure I could finish quicker!).

dreamingofanallotment, I feel your pain - really don't want to go back after HT either! Though I'm still really enjoying the teaching thankfully.. it's the travelling to/between schools and setting up equipment I'm not looking forward to - oh, and controlling the larger primary groups with recorders when I have no energy (thankfully I only teach six of those!).

Peasandyoghurt, I'm finding the planning the hardest thing as well. I find I really need to get in and rest in the evenings - no where near as much energy as I used to have. I can report it's picking up as the pregnancy's going on though - the first few months were very difficult in terms of working in the evenings! All I can recommend is to be as organised as possible. Difficult for me though as I have to do new planning virtually every week... but I'd recommend to not put it off and get it done ASAP, so you can then relax without a cloud of worry over you!

karatekimmi - Also having the bladder issues! Can't believe you have to survive three hour lessons (or not!!). I often have sessions that are 2+ hours, but when they consist of a number of 30min lessons it feels mean to have to leave part way through. I keep having to set tasks ("Sight read through this section of the piece, I want you to have sussed out all the notes by the time I'm back!") and running!

duvetfan, most of mine haven't noticed yet - or haven't commented! I had a few yr6s that guessed, and a couple of yr7s, but that's it! Think I'll have to tell them after HT as some of them have exams coming up and I don't want them to stress - would rather tell them that yes, I am leaving in 6/7 lessons time, but that I've got a plan of action etc.

pickledpeppers, because of the nature of my work I can't really be given "reduced duties", but I am trying to make life easier for myself. I'll soon be refusing to go and "fetch" students in the bigger secondary schools - our SLA actually says we're not supposed to but most of us music peri tutors do! I'll still do it in the lovely small primary schools though :) I'm also going to stop stressing about things out of my control - like doing extra work to make sure the yr10s/11s (coming up to GCSEs) actually practice for their performance- and point out that simply it's their responsibility. Which it is, I'm just normally nice and try and help as much as I can! I'm also going to try and plan lessons that involve less bouncing around classrooms/practice rooms...

Limejelly · 17/02/2012 08:51

I'm a Primary School Teacher ( year 1) and 6 weeks pregnant. Not really had many symptoms yet and only found out I was pregnant on Wednesday so not sure how I will feel back at work next week!

Not looking forward to telling Head, two Teachers from my school are already going off on ML at the end of this year!

I'm very nervous and worried about it all.

pickledpeppers · 17/02/2012 10:03

Musicalmrs yes, baby is due mid May, so I've opted to start my ML on 16th April (the 1st day of summer term), but I'm so glad that my last day at work will be 30th March, I can definitely say I'm in countdown mode.

I might mention that I'm finding the 35 minute playground/lunch duties really hard-going when I have next H&S meeting, atleast I got parents' evenings out of way before half term, that was a killer!

My work are ok about my antenatal appointments, but unfortunately I have to have cover for them which then results in me getting 'pay-back cover' when someone else is off, I guess it's only fair, but it just makes it hard to get all marking and planning done.

Wants3 · 17/02/2012 10:18

Hi again golden lovely to hear your pink news.
Hello musical
I am working to 37 weeks, the 2 weeks after Easter are my hand over weeks so my cover will be in. I will just be answering questions and checking everything is in the right place. As I will not be counted in the ratios at this point if I find it too much I can come home a bit early each day :)

rachel5073 · 17/02/2012 10:25

I'm a secondary school teacher due on 5th May and am also starting my ML after Easter hols on 17th April (16th is a training day and I'm hoping I can be propped up in a corner for it)! School are being pretty rubbish but the students are being amazing and fascinated.

Good to know tgere's other teacher due in May.

Good luck everyone :)

joosiewoosie · 17/02/2012 10:43

Hi all. I'm a primary supply teacher. Have been supplying for a couple of years and enjoying the lack of stress, planning and paperwork!

I'm 38 and almost halfway through my pregnancy for my first child.

It's weird being pregnant on supply. Advantages are that I can be home by 4.30, done and dusted for the day with no further paperwork burden...(I'm now feeling many eyes burning with fury in my direction!) Disadvantages are having to make excuses for dashing to to loo, making you look unreliable and flaky; prospect of v poor maternity pay; not really having a supportive network of workmates who will be good with you; having to forgoe any work for the whole day if I have an ante-natal appointment to attend...in 2 weeks time, I am only able to be free for work on 2 days out of 5...grrrrr.

However, having said all that, I know given a stressy time in the past, I'm not in a position where a full time permanent role would be healthy for me currently, so I am convinced supply is the right decision for me at the moment. Plus it's a bit nicer when I go to my regular request schools, who know me as me and not just 'the supply'. My agency are great and have been understanding in a couple of blips I've had so far.

Good luck to all teachers who are 'with child'...let's make sure we all look after ourselves.

dreamingofanallotment · 17/02/2012 12:05

Hi musicalmrs (think I recognise you from the may babies thread?) yes, I'm finishing at Easter - official start of mat. leave is April 16th, but like pickledpeppers I'm so glad I'm finishing on March 30th! I have a countdown on a whiteboard in my kitchen that I change after work every day....30 days to go!

I'm feeling the pressure now to get everything sorted before I leave - woke up this morning with heart hammering as my head went through a list of jobs that need doing at school (reorganising the whole library and setting up the computer system for issuing library books for one...urgh!). I did notice though that every time I was getting stressed about work stuff, baby stopped wriggling, but as soon as I tried to relax myself, baby started kicking again. Think I'm going to talk to my Head and see how the massive to-do list can be reduced.

May seems to be a very popular time for teacher babies according to this thread - we were obviously full of energy over the summer holidays!!! Wink

ZhenThereWereTwo · 17/02/2012 12:13

Secondary science and primary supply teacher here, on mat leave as 38+5 today with planned DD2.

Hi limejelly glad to see you over here! Think it'll be really helpful having other pg teachers to chat to... I'm also nervous about telling our Head for similar reasons, but I spoke to a friend from school and she was very firm with me - teachers are allowed personal lives and would your Head consider how you'd feel if they were planning a family?! Of course she's right, I think as teachers we do automatically put our job first a lot of the time... Time for that to stop now (as far as possible)! Have any of you more advanced ladies have problems with less than supportive heads/colleagues? hetty and rachel obviously yours haven't been great, rubbish Sad x

nenehooo · 18/02/2012 09:25

And I meant advanced as in pregnancy, not age... Grin

medievaljacqui · 18/02/2012 10:21

Hello
I'm a secondary History and RE teacher due early April! School have been fantastic with me, especially my Y11 tutor group. Lots of concern and helpfulness all round (offering to carry stuff etc). Holding out for maternity leave now, I'm off 2 weeks after half term for 10 months and cannot wait!
Most amusing lesson so far has been teaching sex outside of marriage to my Y11 RE group 28 weeks pregnant (I'm a 'Miss' with a lovely DP). :o

funchum8am · 18/02/2012 11:29

I teach lots of RE as well and did sex outside of marriage last term (are you doing Edexcel?) I am only 9 weeks so pupils nowhere near knowing I'm pg yet (though one girl in my form did ask me whether I was in my first week at the school in September when I wasn't, just fat!!!!) so will be interesting to see how they react when they find out. I teach lots of PSHE and RE stuff relating to sex and relationships so probably they'll just ask me questions which are WAY TOO PERSONAL!

Is anyone else considering quite a short maternity leave? I am due 21 Sept and considering going back after Xmas as DH wants to give up work (also a teacher) permanently to be a SAHD. He is FAR more competent person for this than I am - he already does all the housework. He is keen to give up asap and I am keen to get back to work (I only started a new job in Sept and am head of faculty with no obvious person to replace me). Is that FAR too short a ML though?

pickledpeppers · 18/02/2012 12:43

funchum8am I am taking ML similar to you for financial reasons really. Baby due on 14th May and I'm going back on 1st Sept, actually I'm going back for 2 days before end if summer term so I get full-pay again from then. My SIL was horrified about how early I'm going back as she took a year off, but when I pointed out that I get equivalent of around 4 months off each year in holidays she soon shut up!

I have asked to cut down to 4 days when I return and dh is hoping to do 3 days, but nothing is agreed yet. We will need childcare for 2 or 3 days a week hopefully.

lobba · 18/02/2012 13:27

Hi all, I'm Secondary Maths due at the end of May. At the moment I'm planning on working up until 38wks then going back next Feb half term. I think most of the kids know - it's been quite obvious since we came back after Christmas as I'm all bump!
I've been taken off my break duties when I get back and I'm fortunate that my HOD has just returned from ML so she's constantly telling me to look after myself!
The first few weeks were hard - I was never actually sick but felt nauseous quite alot and the exhaustion nearly killed me- not alot of marking got done!!!
I feel loads better at the moment, so fingers crossed this lasts for a while longer!

avianr3 · 18/02/2012 14:01

Just found out I am pregnant..........Currently teaching year 3. I have one daughter who will be 12 this year so I feel like a first time Mum again lol.

Slightly concerned about how on earth we are going to manage?

HettyTurner · 18/02/2012 14:35

It is so hard to know how long is enough ML. I had 2 terms off and the summer holiday, LO went to nursery at 7.5 months (she's a May baby - obviously the summer holiday has a lot to do with getting BFPs!) and it felt like way too soon, I was still BF and she wasn't sleeping well. By the easter holiday everthing settled down and now I love work.

I've decided that I will have almost the whole year off with number 2 to try to get the sleeping sorted before I go back, but I'm not sure if we can afford it.

How much notice do you need to give to go back? You could always say that you intend to go back at a certain date and change your mind if you want to.

HettyTurner · 18/02/2012 14:36

Oh and expressing milk at work was a NIGHTMARE!

funchum8am · 18/02/2012 16:29

Yes I hadn't really thought about the expressing at work bit - I have an office so could do it in there but they'd have to put a blind on the glass panel in the door and I'd have to lock myself in!!!

I wonder if the fact I'd be leaving the little one with DH rather than in childcare would make it any easier? I think I will have a chat with him about me taking two terms off and going back after the Easter holiday instead. We're lucky that financially it doesn't matter as we both earn almost exactly the same amount. I'm sure he can soldier on at work for one more term if it will save my sanity!

funchum8am · 18/02/2012 16:31

I think you have to give a month's notice before you go back - that's less likely to be an issue than DH resigning - if he resigns half a term in advance as you have to, and THEN I want to take more time off, we'll be without any money til I am ready to go back. We could afford it at a pinch but it would be a bit silly to put ourselves in that position when I am already fully aware that going back that early might be a problem. Will talk with DH.

Have marked all of four year 11 books so far today. I was planning to do so much but instead have done a food shop, ordered a digibox, and lazed about!!!

avianr3 · 18/02/2012 17:13

Can anyone offer any advice on how much maternity pay I will receive? I am finding gathering information on difficult?
