Glucose Tolerance Test

KnitterNotTwitter · 14/02/2012 15:29

Because DS was a great big 'un (10lb 6oz) I've been referred for Glucose Tolerance Testing to check for Pregnancy Diabetes with this one.

I had the test this morning and am trying to work out whether the sensations I had are a good sign or not... Basically I was fine/normal for about the first hour after my Lucosade and then started to get hot and fidgety.

Obviously this could just be caused by lack of food and hanging out in a hospital waiting room...

But if anyone else has had this test could let me know how they reacted I'd be really interested.

Hi knitternottwitter

I had my GTT a few weeks ago and came back clear... 1hr into the 2hrs, I also got hot and fidgety. Also felt a bit sick and shaky. I think it's just how your body responds to the surge in glucose I guess.

I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who came back positive, if it had had a different effect on them...

laughingGnomette · 14/02/2012 16:13

I had exactly the same reaction at about the one and a half hour mark when I had my test last week. I had to go outside to cool down and felt a bit panicky. My results came back normal too. Good luck with yours.

Knitterati and laughingGnomette thanks for the replies - feel normal now!

p.s. knitterati - like the name :)

Mine came back positive, felt fine all the way through, albeit totally starving (as usual)

KnitterNotTwitter · 14/02/2012 16:34

Interesting - so maybe the hot/sweaty/panicky thing is a good sign...

I had mine a few weeks ago and it came back negative and I felt fine throughout - not even hungry, which surprised me (normally can't function without breakfast!).

lalabaloo · 14/02/2012 17:26

I have mine tomorrow, not looking forward to it as even at 28 weeks I'm still quite often sick, especially first thing in the morning or the first thing I eat/drink. Will let you know how I feel after it but those of you who have had the test did you have it because of glucose in your urine or because of risk factors? I had glucose in my urine twice but no other risk factors, I'd like to know roughly how likely I am to get a positive or negative result (i know I can't really tell but I'm worrying and it will give my brain something to think about until tomorrow)

MummyAbroad · 14/02/2012 19:16

oh hey knitter!! I didnt notice your name the first time I posted (I am "working" and MN-ing at the same time) Hope all goes well with the results xxx

lalabaloo I had two routine tests, but because the hospital system in Abroadland is a bit rubbish different, the second one was done at 36 weeks and came back positive. I never had glucose in my urine. After getting my results I googled and found that apparently no one knows what a "normal" glucose level is so late in pregnancy, so a positive test at such a late stage wasnt even acted upon, however I did have lots of other "diabetes" symptoms, like sugar cravings, skin tags, big babies etc.

FlipFantasia · 14/02/2012 20:31

Lalabaloo I had a scan at 29 weeks that showed a big baby with an abdominal circumference that had gone off the charts (AC increasing beyond the normal curve can indicate GD). Other than that had no risk factors, no sugar in urine. Follow up scan at 33 weeks showed baby was still on the same curve so turns out I just grow big babies (DS was (9lbs 1oz, which in my family isn't even that big...). So I wasn't surprised that the GTT came back negative, but was glad to rule out GD nonetheless.

knitterati · 15/02/2012 07:11

lalabaloo I had a GTT due to risk factors - PCOS and diabetes in the family. No sign of glucose in my urine.

knitternottwitter thanks! Like your name too!! Us knitters must stick together!! Let us know how you get on with the GTT results.

lalabaloo · 15/02/2012 13:37

Thanks for your responses, well I had my test today and felt fine throughout, should have results tomorrow or Friday so will report back then

KnitterNotTwitter · 15/02/2012 14:25

That's great Knitter!

hippieshake · 16/02/2012 11:41

I just came back from having my test. I feel slightly 'wired' now. I never have sugary drinks so I think that might be what's making me feel so strange. I don't know whether to sleep or jump around.

I can phone at 4 for my results so we shall see :)

knitterati · 16/02/2012 11:41

Great news knitter Smile

lalabaloo · 16/02/2012 23:01

My test came back normal :)

knitterati · 17/02/2012 08:59

That's great lalabaloo!

TinkerMaloo · 17/02/2012 09:22

i had GD with my last baby, i had sugar in my urine and the test showed i was just just over the cut off to be treated as having GD. They did extra growth scans and told me she was going to be enormous due to a massive abdominal circumference and that they would induce on my due date (already had an awful indution with DS so i was crapping myself...

she came out weighing a massive 7lb 5oz

Flisspaps · 17/02/2012 09:30

I had mine yesterday (33+1). Felt bloody awful last night, but feel fine today. Think that was down to not eating, then stuffing my face when I got home, and then forgetting to eat for the rest of the day Hmm

Ringing at 11ish for the results.

If I'm over the 'cut off' then that should be a fun addition to the list of high risks for homebirth that I have...

KnitterNotTwitter · 17/02/2012 14:49

good news lala

any update hippie or fliss?

Flisspaps · 17/02/2012 17:08

GTT was normal, that's a reason to celebrate with a cake or three Grin

thejoanwilder · 17/02/2012 18:21

Urgh, not to be the doom bringer or anything, but my 28 week one was fine, numbers were excellent, and then at my 34 week appointment there was sugar in my urine, and doctor didn't want to wait around for a second GTT. I am now having to do a finger prick test 4x day and I suspect when I go back to the docs, they will be diagnosing me with GD as my numbers have been a little bit all over the place. About 50% are fine, about 50% are over what they should be. :(

hippieshake · 17/02/2012 18:33

My results came back fine :) Which means I can keep munching on chocolate, yaay!! x

lalabaloo · 18/02/2012 12:24

Great news fliss and hippie, Fliss I am hoping for a homebirth too, but they told me if I had GD they would put me back under the care of the hospital team as they wouldn't be able to look after me and baby properly at home.

Joan that sounds like a right pain, keeping my fingers crossed for you that it will be okay, have the higher numbers been very high? MummyAbroad had an interesting point in her comment above about glucose levels at 36 weeks, and how her googling showed nobody even knows what levels should be at that stage.
