Glucose Tolerance Test

Because DS was a great big 'un (10lb 6oz) I've been referred for Glucose Tolerance Testing to check for Pregnancy Diabetes with this one.

I had the test this morning and am trying to work out whether the sensations I had are a good sign or not... Basically I was fine/normal for about the first hour after my Lucosade and then started to get hot and fidgety.

Obviously this could just be caused by lack of food and hanging out in a hospital waiting room...

But if anyone else has had this test could let me know how they reacted I'd be really interested.

lalabaloo If you did have GD and had looked at the risks and decided to stay at home, they should have supported you in that as it's within your rights to decline consultant care. AFAIK the check on baby takes place within 2-4 hours of birth and can be done at home with you transferring in if baby's blood sugar level is low and requires treatment (several women on the homebirth.org.uk site have had babies at home when they had GD) and the advice is to feed baby immediately after birth to prevent their blood sugar level from falling anyway, which you can do perfectly well in your own home!

I know it's all academic in your case as your level was normal, but thought I should mention it's not a definite that you HAVE to go to hospital in case this comes up in a google search in many months or years time!

I suspect the tipping point may have been my (indulged) craving for irn bru in the last few weeks. I'm not even scottish, fgs.

Numbers are about 40% OK, and about 60% too high, so I am trying to control with diet for the next week or so, and if no joy there, a trip to a nutritionist, and then possibly medication. Boo.

i had mine a few weeks ago felt the same hot and fidgty but think it was because such a small room and no windows open. i also had one hyper baby all day and night after the lucazade. Not heard off hospital so presume results came back ok.

Fliss I know I could refuse to go to hospital if I wanted to, but I would have followed their advice as I would be concerned about the risks, more to do with placenta starting to fail or shoulder dystocia if baby was large due to GD than blood sugars.

But thanks for pointing it out, because I know a lot of women are told in no uncertain terms that they can NOT have a homebirth, and actually it is a choice for everyone to make individually as long as they are aware of risks and benefits of all options and have had all the information they need to make their decision.

That was my reasoning behind the post lala Smile
