What does everyone do about peanuts?

I am usually indifferent to peanuts, but at the moment I am a total peanutoholic and want them in everything, all the time. I am 30 weeks pregnant.

As far as I remember, the guidelines are a bit confused and are to avoid peanuts if you have a family history of allergies (we don't). But I might be wrong... Do you eat peanuts? Should I try to transfer my addiction to another nut?!

I ate peanuts through all of my pregnancies as there's no history of nut allergy in the family.

quitcomplaining · 13/02/2012 14:26

What do I do about them?

.... I get them. In the form of snickers bars... Several times a week at the moment . I keep telling dp they are my craving Grin

quitcomplaining · 13/02/2012 14:26

*eat not get!

Ponyclubmum · 13/02/2012 14:28

I'm 11 weeks pregnant, and my midwife told me it's ok to eat them as long as you have no family history of allergies. When I was pregnant 3 years ago with DS, I was told to avoid them all together. The advice changes so often it's hard to keep up!

HappyCamel · 13/02/2012 14:32

Well I have huge allergy problems (but not to peanuts) and my immunologist said to expose myself and dd to as many different foods as possible. Fwiw my mum was a midwife and says the rise in peanut allergy coincides with when they stopped using peanut oil as a moisturiser on newborns in hospitals.

Late exposure seems to be a problem but actually I think synthetic foods, such as formula milk, is the biggest cause. I know loads of kids with milk allergy, excema and then they go on to have food allergies and intolerance. They are all formula fed (interestingly it seems to be the ones who started on breast milk and then switched after a few weeks).

thefurryone · 13/02/2012 16:41

That's quite a big claim HappyCamel can you link to any research that backs up your theory?

crackersncheese · 13/02/2012 17:03

Snickers bars were the only thing I enjoyed eating for a couple of weeks when the morning sickness was at it's worst. I wasn't giving them up for anything

nickelDorritt · 13/02/2012 17:06

you don't need to avoid them if you have no family history of allergy
they're a good form of protein and a handy snack.

Alligatorpie · 13/02/2012 17:06

I have a tree nut allergy ( hazelnuts, brazil nuts, pecans...) but not peanuts. I avoided them with dd and she has no allergies. As the guidelines has changed I am eating them while pg with this baby. I crave protein and they seem to do the trick.

In answer to OP question what I tend to do is worry and worry. I have asthma and hayfever and allergic to cats and dogs. I have read in some places due to allergies I should avoid peanuts in pregnancy, and especially in breastfeeding, and elsewhere the complete opposite - a HappyCamel-style 'more exposure the better'.

Both schools sound pretty logically sound so I'm completely confused as to what to do for the best! My asthma etc are pretty minor (these days at least - v-severe as a child) but I'm really quite frightened of how limiting/ life-threatening peanut and other food allergies can be...

Advice from anybody who can speak with any authority on this would be appreciated greatly...

SarryB · 13/02/2012 17:16

I couldn't not eat peanuts. Especially peanut butter - I must eat about 2 jars a week!

PrincessWatermelon · 13/02/2012 17:19

I eat them!!!

Peas - I am like you - asthma/hayfever/ezcema/cat allergy. But I have no food allergies, so I eat everything in pregnancy! And I plan to bf to reuce the risk of atopy in my child.

VJayazzle · 13/02/2012 17:24

There's no history of any nut allergy in my family, but I still avoided them, only for ds2 to be allergic!

Peasandyoghurt · 13/02/2012 17:28

Ooh Princess, have you done this with previous pregnancies, or is this your first? x

AnEcumenicalMatter · 13/02/2012 17:33

PrincessWatermelon, I have hay fever, eczema, cat allergy too (no astha, luckily) but no food allergies and I'm taking the same approach...exposure to everything while pregnant and then hopefully BF too. Fingers crossed it works.

belindarose · 13/02/2012 17:48

Latest nhs guidelines say no need to avoid unless you are actually allergic to peanuts. I avoided in my last pregnancy, following the guidance at the time, which was avoid if you had a history of excema, hayfever or asthma. DD has a peanut allergy. So I'm not avoiding this time, but of course we don't have peanuts in the house anyway, so not mug chance to eat them. I crave peanut butter on toast!

OTTMummA · 13/02/2012 17:57

I would also like to see that research HappyCamel.

Flowerface · 13/02/2012 18:14

That's a relief! I have been eating tonnes. I did last time too, because I was oblivious to the fact that there was any controversy about it... (was too busy concentrating on the cheese!) But I wasn't that bothered then. This time, all I want is Picnics and peanut butter...

My midwife told me that they were safe to eat and even went as far as crossing out the advice about peanuts in the green notes.

She told me that she's been a midwife for 20 years and in her opinion the rise in peanut allergies has coincided with the advice not to eat them during pregnancy. She has nothing but anecdotal evidence and observation to go on but I remember her telling me during my last pregnancy (6 years ago) that she disagreed with the peanut advice for this reason but she couldn't officially tell me they were safe to eat (I took the risk and dd seems fine)

goingmadtrying · 13/02/2012 18:28

We have no family history of allergies but out of the blue my last ds was diagnosed with a milk allergy. I asked the midwife if there was anything that I could do to deter my new babies from the milk allergy and she recommended I dont eat peanuts as they can trigger allergies. HTH

ballroompink · 13/02/2012 19:18

I had been told not to eat peanuts but didn't feel it was an issue due to no history of food allergies so have been eating them (and many other types of nut) throughout my pregnancy.

melliebobs · 13/02/2012 19:27

I have asthma. Mw said eating peanuts is fine. Guidelines always change. And that's just what they are. Guidlines not hard n fast rules

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 13/02/2012 19:29

I had a serious peanut addiction during pregnancies. snickers and reese's and plenty of them :o

PinkPepper · 13/02/2012 19:47

Hide them from DP
