Where to buy a bedside cot?

I didn't think this was going to be so difficult, but the only source of bedside cots I can find is Mothercare - can anyone suggest any others? John Lewis no longer do one. I've looked at previous threads on here, and people recommended something called the Close and Cosy Cot from Mamas and Papas, but as far as I an see from their website, they no longer stock it, and also one Blooming Marvellous, but the link just takes me to a maternity wear range on the Mothercare website (does BM no longer exist?)

Lots of ebay, but we don't drive, and all large items seem to require you to collect.

At 34 weeks, with nothing for the baby to sleep in, am feeling we need to get moving.

Do you mean like a co-sleeper type cot? Look on the NCT website shop area I have seen them there but they are quite pricey.

this looks like what you are after I hope

I had problems trying to find one too - you would think that there would be lots of them about given their recent rise in popularity!
I've gone for the Mothercare one.

John Lewis do one by Troll.

Also www.expressyourselfmums.co.uk stock two or three different bedside cribs/ cots.

A friend has recommended the cosatto close to me bedside cot

Amazon now sold out though so I might buy this now!

Minstrelsaremarvellous · 09/02/2012 19:02

I just got the Troll recently online from JohnLewis. Came within 2 days. Was about £130 so more than a Moses basket but am desperate to use it now (9 days overdue!) Grin

scroogemcduck · 09/02/2012 19:07

Have bought the BabyBay one from NCT site. Looks good though still waiting for baby to road test it. Might be cheaper ordering direct from Germany (tho site all in German - who'd have thought it...)

Thanks, everyone - but is the John Lewis-stocked Troll a bedside crib, Minstrel, rather than a bedside cot? I know that a Troll bedside cot does exist, but we had one of those John Lewis nursery consultations and I specifically asked about what bedside cots they stocked, only to be told they didn't carry them any more...

At the moment, we're still thinking of the Mothercare one, as the cheapest available new - they are pricey.

John Lewis stock the Troll bedside crib.

This site sells the bedside cot as well as the bedside crib.

I had a Moses basket on a simple wooden stand (which folded up) which I positioned right next to my bed at night. It was MUCH cheaper just for the 3 months I needed baby right next to me. Baby then graduated to full size cot which we had in the room, and then moved to own room.
I got my Moses stand at an nct nearly new sale for a fiver, but they only cost about £20 new. The Moses basket was my sisters. It's done 4 children so far, and is soon to house #5!

I have the bednest which I bought via the NCT website as it was on offer. It was absolutely brilliant. Looking forward to using it for no 2 due soon. Although I am going to buy a better mattress for it. I highly recommend an alongside cot.

igggi · 09/02/2012 20:27

Saggybaps I have a thread (unanswered Sad ) trying to find someone who owns a bednest to answer a question for me - in the hope that you'll check back here goes! When the side is down where does it go? Do it lie on your bed? And if so is it uncomfortable? Thanks

Mikocat · 10/02/2012 12:22

I bought a Baby Bay on Amazon from a German company, It was half the price of buying from Mothercare:

www.amazon.co.uk/babybay-original-beech-white-varnish/dp/B0014KPABE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1328876374&sr=8-3

Note though that you have to buy the accessories (side bar, mattress) separately, which I don't think you do with the Mothercare one, it still ended up costing me £200 all in though as all the bits were from the same company and they only charged me one lot of shipping! (£8). It took a few weeks to arrive though (about 6 as I recall).

babynest · 13/02/2012 14:05

try the bednest which I just love.

babynest · 13/02/2012 14:08

igggi - the side flops down onto your bed - you can fold it to make it shorter so you don't lie on it which we find works better that having it extended out if you understand what I mean..

HidingInTheUndergrowth · 13/02/2012 14:51

I got one of the mothercare bedside cots from ebay for £30. We put it up yesterday and I'm very pleased with it, the condition is amazing and it looks as good as new. You could try setting up a search in ebay with e-alerts for ones in your area so it will email you when one is listed.

Now I just need a baby to put in it...

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 13/02/2012 14:57

We used an ikea cot - it has two different side panels, one of which is meant to turn it into a toddler bed. We used the low side panel and kept the mattress high (drilled new holes to make it exactly the same height as mattress, which was easy) and hey presto, a bedside cot! As i recall we pushed the mattress snugly up to ours and stuffed the far side with rolled towels to make it safe and secure.

Anyway, it worked a treat, was v cheap and my dd is still using the same cot now at 2. Although in her own room now.

igggi · 13/02/2012 15:35

Babynest thank you! I couldn't work it out. Trying to justify the 300 prive tag by the fact that they seem to resell on ebay for 200.

igggi · 13/02/2012 15:36

SoozyWoozy · 13/02/2012 19:40

I bought I 3-sided cot from a local independent retailer which has seen my through 2 babies, and I'm expecting to use it again for this babe. If I remember the brand I will post again! One side slides up and over and stores neatly on the other side. Is that similar to the mothercare version?

My friend used an American brand co-sleeper which seems to have become available in the UK. I coveted it when I was pregnant with DD2 in 2005 but DH never did agree that it was a good idea to have it shipped over! It's called Arm's Reach and they do several sizes of bedside cribs, my friend said it was brilliant and got a good price when selling it second hand.

HTH :)

PieMistress · 13/02/2012 19:46

I got 2nd hand bed nest (total steal at £30) and then bought a new mattress. I put a wanted adv up on a few baby forums. It's really good, it's crib sized and clips to the side of your bed. I really wanted one but couldn't justify the cost new as bubs would only use it for a few months before going into a cot.

Seconding FruitSalad - friends of mine have gone down the ikea DIY route and said it is fab.

TimeWasting · 13/02/2012 19:53

Ebay

heliumballoon · 13/02/2012 19:58

Troll bedside crib from JL is shit. Big gap between crib and bed, which we plug with a rolled up towel. But it's on wheels, and even with the brakes on keeps moving away from the bed. Drives me bonkers. Wish we had shelled out more for the bed nest.

Spiritedwolf · 20/02/2012 20:03

Hi, I was really keen on the Mothercare Bedside Cot (despite some less positive reviews) but can no longer find it on the Mothercare website. Gutted. I'm almost 18 weeks, and I know I couldn't really have ordered it when I first saw it (it's still quite early TBH) but I'm really disappointed that it's not available.

So, three questions:

  1. What are the chances of Mothercare restocking this item between now and July? Do they often change what they stock or is it now a case of it's out until a new catalogue comes in?
  1. Other than the Mothercare Bedside cot, do you know of any other bedside cots? I'm specifically looking for something big to last baby till toddlerhood rather than moses basket size replacements. Up thread there is mention of the Troll Bedside cot, though it's out of stock on NCT (and is a bit pricey) - oh it seems to be in expressyourselfmums, but again is pricey.
  1. I was really keen on having the flexibility of a designed bedside cot so that there were more mattress height positions, and so the cot could be moved back from the bed and the fourth side put up if necessary. But have you been able manage fine with a regular cot and just not put the dropside on?

I know I'm being a bit precious wanting the baby to have it's own space rather than just getting a bedrail, but I feel we could do with the extra room and peace of mind that covers and pillows will be that bit further away from baby's sleep space. It also might lessen any negative comments about us co-sleeping from well meaning family/health visitors.

I already have an ebay search set up for my local area and travelable distance but I'm not holding out much hope because it's not a heavily populated area, and I don't know what the co-sleeping ratio would be like as it's not a traditionally hippy area. Grin

Where are you? I'm about to list mine on eBay, we might be neighbours...
