Where to buy a bedside cot?

I didn't think this was going to be so difficult, but the only source of bedside cots I can find is Mothercare - can anyone suggest any others? John Lewis no longer do one. I've looked at previous threads on here, and people recommended something called the Close and Cosy Cot from Mamas and Papas, but as far as I an see from their website, they no longer stock it, and also one Blooming Marvellous, but the link just takes me to a maternity wear range on the Mothercare website (does BM no longer exist?)

Lots of ebay, but we don't drive, and all large items seem to require you to collect.

At 34 weeks, with nothing for the baby to sleep in, am feeling we need to get moving.

I've messaged you, it's a long shot but fingers crossed!

bigbadbarry · 20/02/2012 20:44

Sorry :( That would have been rather wonderful. Anybody else want it?

AlanMoore · 23/04/2012 14:19

I thought I'd resurrect this thread as I too am finding the lack of bedside cots for less than one billion pounds a bit annoying.

Nothing has appeared on ebay or gumtree for me yet and baby is due soon. I ended up cosleeping with my first DC and really really want a bedside cot for this one.

Which Ikea cot have people adapted? Our bedroom is small so I'm not sure if I will be able to fit a full-size cot at the side of the bed (DC1 only ever had travel cot so don't have one to compare with).

I have been considering this but it does look a bit pants and is now suddenly unavailable!

Any bright thoughts anyone? bigbadbarry I have pm'd you in case you still have yours and are anywhere near me!

I bought a Homcom one here:

www.homcom.co.uk/baby-crib-bed-with-mattress-2-in-1.html

Annoyingly the price has gone up since I got one and the white one is now out of stock. You might find another seller where it is still a bit cheaper or be happy with a blue or pink one, although they seem even more expensive again. However £114 is still less than some.

I'm happy with mine although it has not been used yet and I've seen other favourable reviews on other threads. It seems fairly solid and my fear that it wouldn't be very good quality at that price was unfounded.

It isn't a full sized cot so I guess will only do for 4-6 months or so.

Spiritedwolf · 24/04/2012 10:37

After bugging the Mothercare customer support email a couple of times, they have finally got a date when their bedside cot will be back in stock - 17th May - and have put it back up on the website available for preorder.

It's £200 (without mattress) and is pretty much a full size cot, though it takes a continental mattress it says its suitable up to around 2 years old (though one reviewer used it up till 5 apparently) so it might not fulfill your space and budget requirements Alan.

I think I'll probably go for it. My parents have offered to buy our cot, but I think I'll make sure they know that we'd be ecstatic fine with just a contribution towards this one, as its our fault we're being so specific and not going for a cheaper cot.

Will order it once we've got the bedroom ready (am 27 weeks, how time does fly!)

AlanMoore · 24/04/2012 11:27

Ooh thanks Spiritedwolf, that's too expensive for me though and 17 May is leaving it a bit late for me to get full use from it, my baby could be here by then...

If I was on DC1 I would have looked at it though, sounds pretty good, much better value than a tiny Babybay or whatever if it goes to 2 years old (dependent on size of child of course).

I find it bizarre that nobody (Ikea? Argos? M&P? The dreaded Mothercare?) is making a bedside cot in the under £100 price bracket, I mean look at the Babybay, there's hardly any wood in it, it's tiny! I wish I had realised earlier on how expensive/rare they are, my stepdad is a joiner and I bet he could have made me a copy of a Babynest.

AlanMoore · 24/04/2012 11:30

Doodlegoogle I've never heard of Homcom before and they didn't come up in any of my searches.

That one is a better price, and it looks reasonably long if you get a smallish baby, my DC1 is small and would have fitted in there to about 9 months I think.

Spiritedwolf · 24/04/2012 11:41

That's okay Alan, no harm in having a small budget for a crib. We don't intend to spend much on a pram for instance.

We figured that if it lasts until baby is around 2 years, that we might have another on the way/planned by then as this one is our first, so I intend to get full use of it!

Whereas with prams, we want to use a carrier/sling most of the time and we have space constraints too, so we're probably going for a buggy thats suitable from birth for those odd occasions we might use it.

I think other than the cot our other expensive item might be a good car seat, but we haven't really researched those yet. Must start looking!

PilchardsonToast · 24/04/2012 13:26

I am defiantely getting one a bedside cot too, I've heard a few people talknig about buying from German companies and had a look, theres a site called baby-markt.de which sells the basic babybay at 130 euro plus 13 euro postage, if you go on the site its in german but if you google baby markt english you can find a link to a translated page. I haven't bought mine yet but it all looks proper!

PilchardsonToast · 24/04/2012 13:27

definitely

AlanMoore · 25/04/2012 09:16

I'm afraid mein Deutsche ist scheisse, not a chance, I'd probably end up buying 50 at wholesale by accident! Sounds like a good idea though.

PointyDogs · 25/04/2012 13:18

You can get the BabyBay bedside cot from a German company that sells through Amazon.co.uk - ours took about 2 or 3 weeks to arrive (less than they originally advised). It is at www.amazon.co.uk/BabyBay-babybay-original-beech-untreated/dp/B0014YQH58/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1335356121&sr=8-2. No requirement to speak German :) They are loads cheaper than the same item from the UK suppliers, and if you order multiple items (cot, mattress, side panel in our case) they only charge the one lot of postage (£8). Can't recommend highly enough, really pleased with it :)

avacat · 25/04/2012 23:48

After much searching, I found and bought this one: www.olivers-baby-care.co.uk/nursery-furniture/baby-changing-units/baby-elegance-elegant-cream-bedside-cot.html
I wanted something that would last longer than 6 months.
Baby isn't here yet to test it out, but we were able to set it up very easily and it looks and feels sturdy.

AlanMoore · 27/04/2012 08:38

I'm sure that's lovely but it's WAY over our budget - we didn't pay that for our own bed! I'm going to Ikea to find something to adapt unless I find a second hand "normal" cot to adapt in the next week or so.
