Box sets DVDs for maternity leave (before the baby arrives)

The only thing that is getting me through work at the moment is the thought of having (should the baby arrive at 40 weeks) time to myself before the arrival. I am only 26 weeks, so I need to concentrate!

I am praying that I go to 40 weeks, which will give me 4 weeks at home to get myself sorted, but I also plan on watching some DVDs with a constant stream of full fat hot chocolate.

I am years behind the times with TV series' and programmes, but in the past I have absolutely loved 24. Can anyone recommend DVD boxed sets in a similar vein? I have heard about The Killing, and various versions (languages?) and various series - which one of those should I be going for? All suggestions very welcome.

The American Killing is alright. Fringe is good. Bones is brilliant. Prison Break was good, at least the first season was.

maxpower · 23/01/2012 14:43

I watched Prison Break while on mat leave with DD. The Killing is good.

floralsanddresses · 23/01/2012 14:49

Firefly was excellent when it was on. Good for a watch if you like scifi.

thejoanwilder · 23/01/2012 17:10

The Good Wife- excellent!
Homeland- also excellent, and I think in a similar-ish vein to 24 (although I have never seen 24).
Futurama if you are a geek at all.
Community- very funny

I think DH and I need to get out more...! Baby's not even here yet!!

stinkingbishop · 23/01/2012 17:11

West Wing and Spooks.

MadamTwoSwords · 23/01/2012 17:16

I watched Lost, Harry Potter and Battlestar Galactica.

MrsJK · 23/01/2012 17:22

Dexter is gd & in a similar vein to 24!

PLUS they are up to about season 6 now so you can rent & watch them back to back! Grin

Do not watch all your box sets before you have the baby! Good box sets are vital to get you the first few weeks of pinned to the sofa breast feeding. My personal favourites were Battlestar Galactica, early seasons of Lost, True Blood, House; I'dd add the modern Stephen Moffat Sherlock Holmes - and good Wife is excellent too. Also once you are stuck to the sofa breast feeding Dave and endless repeats of Top Gear become strangely appealling.

dinkystinky · 23/01/2012 17:23

West Wing

The Wire

Big Bang Theory

screamingeels · 23/01/2012 17:24

I meant Dave the channel, not that you have to breast feed someone called Dave......

Littlecherublegs · 23/01/2012 17:36

The Sopranos
The Wire
6 Feet Under

Bit lighter - Friends, Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives, Mistresses

Kiddie but very cool, colourful, imaginative and easy to watch - any of the Ghibli films (Spirited Away, Arriety etc.) - love them!! Smile

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 23/01/2012 17:38

I got through the whole of Frasier when I was bfing ds. Also Scrubs and Ally McBeal. I plan to crack out the Lost boxset this time round and watch it all from the beginning.

AnonymousBird · 23/01/2012 17:39

oh, gosh how could I forget, The Sopranos ....

And agree with the poster who said save some for the complete tedium of feeding seemingly all day in the early weeks..... I had DD set up in a carrycot in the sitting room so I could just crash when she crashed, watch an episode/nod off or whatever and then pick her up to feed and sit on the sofa in one easy move when she woke....

naturalbaby · 23/01/2012 17:44

I watched the whole of prison break on my maternity leave. One a day then an afternoon nap on the sofa. I had 4 weeks before baby arrived, it was heaven!

The Wire, Luther, Dexter? (am gutted I've finished them all, is there anything that can top those 3?!)

PetiteRaleuse · 23/01/2012 17:44

Sopranos (another vote here for it being the best TV series ever) and Dexter are may favourites of all time. Desperate Housewives too, and my Friends boxset was watched again and again right through my maternity leave.

MiauMau · 23/01/2012 17:49

Definitely a vote for True Blood, it's hilarious and the guys are easy on the eye :o
I'm on the fence about Grey's anatomy, although I really like it being pregnant and watching medical drama doesn't mix, you know for a fact that the lovely patient is going to die and everyone is really miserable.
I would go for comedies, if you can find "Pushing Daisies" I would totally recommend it!

spannermary · 23/01/2012 17:49

The Danish version of The Killing is the original and definitely superior to the American version. Love it!

The second series isn't bad either.

As for other TV, I've been enjoying CSI, but if you have Sky Living (I think...) and Sky+ it's on several times a day, so you could just record the series.

And House is great. But you may be off medics for a while... ;0)

MiauMau · 23/01/2012 18:09

House is even worse, because you know fir a fact that the patient has to go into heart failure first before he/she recovers!!
Oh, raising Hope is also a good one :)

SwivelHips · 23/01/2012 18:20

True Blood (if you like a sexy vampire or 2)
The Wire (We're only on series 4 and each one gets better)
The Sopranos (We're only on series 3 and its great)
Game of Thrones (total escapism and bloody brilliant). Series 2 starts on sky April, DH on book 4 and the stories are still great)

shoeprincess2 · 23/01/2012 18:26

Dexter got me through the breastfeeding hours! Also recommend True Blood, West Wing, The Sopranos, Battlestar Gallactica, Being Human, Cracker, Prime Suspect, Sex and The City and Mistresses. I also spent a lot of my pre birth maternity leave doing oodles of washing and cooking meals to freeze. Oh, and sorting and re-sorting baby's drawers!!

DeeBeee · 23/01/2012 18:27

The Wire is absolutely fantastic, start on Season 1 and you will be hooked!
