I am 15w+4 and I had a MW appointment when I was 14 weeks. The MW said she would have a go at finding the heartbeat but she couldn't. She didn't seem remotely worried about it at all. Not even a tiny bit. Just said it was still too early and to see her at 16 weeks. So I have an appointment on Thursday.

But since then I have been worrying about it and I am now at the point of panic that something has gone wrong.

I have felt occasional little fluttering type movements but I am not 100% it is the baby moving.

I have a doppler at home and I haven't been able to find the heartbeat with that either but did hear some sort of taps that sound similar to what the MW pointed out as kicks when I was pregnant with DS2.

I still have some symptoms. I need to wee more than usual, getting leg cramps that I only get when pregnant. I have got some heartburn but not as much as I had last week.

We have got a private scan booked for Saturday as DP goes away to work next Tuesday so wouldn't be home for the 20 week scan.

I rang the maternity ward and they just said I could go to the EPAU tomorrow if I want but I don't want to waste their time if I have an appointment to see MW on Thursday anyway.

Please give some help to calm down a bit until Thursday.

Ah love,i was like this ll the way thru with dd who is now a healthy 11months.It was horrible,i did a million pg tests in the early days this progressed to panicking about l;ack of symptoms then lack of movements.Im not sure why i was like it.I did use a dopler but not until i was 20 wks and i was surprisingly ok if i couldnt find the hb occasionally id just try later.Im sure its nothing like it was for me and many others who felt the same.

ledkr · 02/01/2012 18:05

Mw couldnt find hb on me either,i think that planted the seed of doubt.
Go to epu if you are worried.

Boys2mam · 02/01/2012 18:10

Hi Kayzr

Its easy to drive yourself bonkers over things the MW's don't bat an eyelash at (I also have a thread running currently) but if she was worried at 14 wks she wouldn't have left you unmonitored. Plus, I thought HB monitoring only started from 16 wks anyway?

Can u give her a call in the morning for some reassurance? My mw office runs an drop in session each morning and are happy to speak to you on the phone.

I hope Thurs goes well for you and you get to hear LO's HB xx

MrsHoolie · 02/01/2012 18:14

In both my pregnancies the MW didn't listen for the heartbeat as they said there was no point as they probably wouldn't be able to find it til then.

Xmasbaby11 · 02/01/2012 18:14

It's unlikely you would feel proper movement this early - I was 22 weeks I think, and by that stage had no pg symptoms and only a slight bump. And if the mw couldn't find the heartbeat, it's not surprising you can't either. I wouldn't advise trying to do your own checks like this as you will only panic (as you are now!) when you can't find the heartbeat.

I doubt you have anything to worry about, but go to a drop in clinic tomorrow for a check up - it shouldn't take longer than 20 mins and they are happy to do it for your peace of mind.

TeaandHobnobs · 02/01/2012 18:16

Oh Kayzr I am right there with you! We are due date buddies, I think, and I am also bricking it about not being able to tell what's going on in there. I know I have an anterior placenta, according to the last scan, so am less likely to feel anything until later on. Felt one movement at 13ish weeks (possibly) but nothing since. I now can't sleep because I get so worried and worked up about it! Sad

So nothing I can offer except maybe we can hold each other's hands until our MW appointments this week? We can be brave together Smile

Kayzr · 02/01/2012 18:17

Thanks, Smile

I think she only did to see if she could find it but like I say she wasn't worried or anything about it.

I am tempted to go to the epu but the mw I spoke to said people with pain and bleeding would be seen first and I could be sat there all day.

My midwife found the HB at 16 weeks but only for about 5 secs because it wouldn't stay still. She said it was like looking fir a needle in a haystack. It the took her ages to find the HB at every other appointment and even then it wasn't terribly clear because baby kept moving. I even had one appointment at about 24 weeks with a nurse practitioner who couldn't find it at all although it was obvious baby was wriggling away because you could see my tummy moving. It's only the last 2 appts at 34 and 36 weeks where it's been easy to pick it up clearly as it can't run away. I've been lucky as i've had growth scans in between so it's been reassuring to see baby's heart beating. I'm sure you will get that in the scan you have booked on Sat. Try not to worry, I'm sure your baby is fine. It's still so tiny atm that it can easily hide and avoid your Doppler.

If you really can't settle, than go along to the EPAU. I'm sure they won't mind and will be very reassuring.

I hope that's a little bit reassuring. I remember crying to DH at 16 weeks because it's a long time since the 12 week scan and you have so little to reassure you, but I'm sure everything is as it should be if your MW isn't worried.

Kayzr · 02/01/2012 18:20

Tea When is your appointment? It is driving me mad. I expect its all ok but I can't feeling in a big panic Sad

AnotherBloominChristmastance · 02/01/2012 18:24

Hi Hope your ok

My midwife struggled to find heart beat at 16 weeks this time and at 20 week scan i discovered it was because of an anterior placenta, i felt this baby properly for the first time at 25 weeks, i've never been so panicky but all is well, as for a doppler at home i think those things should be band, i was never able to here DD through mine and i think it just worried me more, I'm sure baby is fine. Grin

TeaandHobnobs · 02/01/2012 18:27

Wednesday afternoon.

I spent much of the Christmas break searching for places that do private scans, but like you I thought I would try and hold out for the MW appointment first to see what she says / what she can find. I think it also doesn't help that I have this flipping great cyst in there too - was definitely getting in the way on the 12wk scan, not sure if that will make finding hb difficult too.

Going to have some camomile tea before bed to try and knock myself out!

Thinking positive thoughts for the both of us Smile and I bet when we get to the stage of being kicked all day long, we shall both look back on this and think Hmm! Wink

Kayzr · 02/01/2012 18:31

Yeah we can have a laugh about it in 10 weeks Smile

You'd think being on baby number 3 that I'd be used to this sort of thing and I'd know if I was feeling movements or not.

Hi,

We were offered the chance to hear the baby at 15 weeks and the MW advised that she might not be able to hear it at that point. We were lucky that baby wanted to play.

Wolfiefan · 02/01/2012 18:47

I have never been offered this that early and don't know anyone else who has either. My daughter was a nightmare for them to find even at 20+ weeks. Having met the madam I am sure she was deliberately hiding and being awkward. So sorry this has made you nervous. Sending you positive vibes....

Enfyshedd · 02/01/2012 19:02

I'm with DieDeutschLehrerin with the wriggly LO not wanting to play ball - at the dating scan (which put me at 11+1), it took ages to find my little shrimp hiding in the corner and at my 16 week appointment, the midwife took about 5 minutes again to find the heartbeat with the doppler. About 2 mins in, she heard it for a second then LO moved; another 1 1/2 mins in MW was going "Come on baby. I know you're in there, I heard you", before we pinned down LO for about 15-20 seconds for a good listen, then LO moved again. To be honest, my mum came with me to my 16wk appointment (DP had to pick up DSS2 from school at same time appointment was booked), and we were both trying not to laugh at how awkward LO was being (my mum has a huge scar from the CS she had for me because my head was fully engaged and I was on my way out by the time they opened her up, so I think she sees it as just desserts).

Kayzr · 02/01/2012 19:05

Actually that could be a good point Enfyshedd at my dating scan the baby wouldn't stay still at all. It was wriggling all over the place.

I think I might leave the epau tomorrow as I feel there are more important people they should see and wait it out until Thursday. I could always try and ring to speak to my MW.

iFailedTheTuringTest · 02/01/2012 19:18

Really, really don't try monitoring at home. That way madness lies...

SESthebrave · 02/01/2012 19:20

Kayz - sorry you're feeling so worried. Perfectly understandable but I do think that the others are right and your LO is probably just playing hide and seek and wriggling around. I had an appointment with the consultant at 14wks with this one and was really disappointed they didn't try and listen for the hb but there was probably no point. At my 16wk MW appointment, they did try and find it and after a few anxious moments (for me), it was there.

I hope everyone's reassurances help and your appointment on Thursday comes round quickly.

Crosshair · 02/01/2012 19:21

Hope you're feeling better.

It took the midwife a good 2 minutes to find the hb at my 16 week scan and he moved after a few seconds.

Enfyshedd · 02/01/2012 19:21

Kayzr, I'm normally the type of person who can be very doom & gloom, and will always scope out the worst case scenarios however since I got my BFP, I've been strangely calm about the whole thing and tried to keep to the state of mind of A. Whatever is meant to happen will happen & B. I'll KNOW if something is wrong (I think my MW thought I was really weird when I didn't have any questions at my booking in appointment). You are the only person who really knows if you feel something is wrong so if you think you really want that second opinion, by all means go to the EPAU.

But it could just be an awkward little so-and-so Wink

griphook · 02/01/2012 19:29

Hi my mw don't evn check for a heart beat at 16 weeks any more because they so often can't find one due to baby moving and only being little.

with your doppler is it an angel sounds one, or a summer one. Some have really bad reviews, check you can find your own heart beat first. Also make sure you are using lots of gel and have a really full bladder. I couldn't find the heart beat first of all with this preg and was terrified, but after a few days of trying I found it really really really low down, just above the pubic bone, at 20 week scan they said baby was really low, so it could be that.

Kayzr · 02/01/2012 19:33

I got the Doppler from a friend who is a nurse. She used it when she was pg last year. I wasn't planning on using it until later on but since MW couldn't find it I've tried.

Ive got a few things to do so hopefully it'll be Thursday very soon and my appointment is at 8:45 so very early in morning. No waiting. Smile

PiggyMad · 02/01/2012 19:57

Just to add to what some others posters have said - I'm 26 weeks now and the midwife has never tried to find the heartbeat. She said it is more important to get to know the baby's movements to monitor well-being.
I was a bit miffed she wouldn't have a go (and think she is a bit lazy as has never tested my urine or bp as I've had them taken at ante-natal clinic appts - but that's a whole other thread...), but now I can feel movements I'm not too worried about hb and don't have a doppler.
Hopefully Thursday will come round quickly and all will be well :)

2012hellokitty · 03/01/2012 14:20

kay - it is hard not to worry i was a nightmare with both!!
if u can hold on till thurs do otherwise go to clinic

FootprintsInTheSnow · 03/01/2012 14:30

My MW couldn't find a Doppler heart beat at 39 weeks! (I hasten to say - to a healthy baby who is currently organising her younger brothers in some kind of space explorers game).

Pregnancy is 40 weeks living on your nerves, I find.
