Hypnobirthing - CD & course or just CD?

Hoping someone can help... I'm thinking about trying out hypnobirthing for DC1 due in March.

Do you have to do the course or can you get on just as well by listening to the CD? Just wondering if the course(s) are worth the extra expense...

Just marking my place as I am interested too!

QueenOfAllBiscuitsandMuffins · 30/12/2011 20:59

Which version of hypnobirthing? If you are talking about Mongans then do course deffo.

Deafworm · 30/12/2011 21:00

If you can afford it do the course, it's well worth the money

knitterati · 30/12/2011 21:12

It's the Katharine Graves CD I'm considering...I think she's connected to Mongan method, but not endorsed?? Not sure.

I did just the cd with dd2 and it definitely helped, thought I could wing it with dd3 and found out not really!

Had the best birth of my three by a mile. Just do it !

spannermary · 30/12/2011 23:22

Which CD did you do, Doris? I'm another lurker here... Can't afford course. Wondering if CD is better than nothing!

HardCheese · 30/12/2011 23:40

Also interested in responses. Does anyone have opinions on whether the Mongan method or the Maggie Howells 'Effective Birth Prep' one is better, and whether one of them is more suitable to be done as a CD only, rather than CD and course? Is your birth partner's commitment, practice and preparation supremely important?

emsyj · 30/12/2011 23:42

I did the Hypnobirthing (Mongan Method) course and was really happy with the results. My tutor was (and still is) a very experienced senior midwife, which I think makes a difference - the course wasn't just Hypnobirthing relaxation techniques but a font of information about birth generally. I would do the course if you can, but the CD is great for helping send you off to a sound sleep! I used to put it on at bedtime and never made it to the end before nodding off.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 30/12/2011 23:43

Also marking my place. Am doing Maggie Howells' CDs but TBH the birth one actually frightens me, which does not seem ideal. I don't know if I'm just not cut out for hypnobirthing (or maybe just birthing full stop Hmm) or whether I should try a different CD or some classes...

emsyj · 30/12/2011 23:53

How is it frightening? I've never used those CDs, the only one I had is the 'Rainbow Relaxation' one through the Mongan Method course. It is just relaxation stuff - nothing scary I don't think (altho as I said, never made it to the end before falling asleep!!)

It isn't good to be frightened by something that is supposed to relax you...

LoveInASnowyClimate · 31/12/2011 00:21

I enjoy most of it but tense up at the bit about the baby actually making its way down the birth canal and out, which is the bit at which I will presumably in fact most need to be relaxed. I am petrified of the whole thing, TBH - not sure I need hypnobirthing so much as a general anesthetic for the entire process...

musicalmrs · 31/12/2011 09:30

I've just gone ahead and bought a hypnobirthing book and accompanying CD. I'm a very methodical person who studies from texts all the time (I love academia!), and think that will work for me - plus I can't afford the £200+ for a course! However, if you're someone that needs practical, physical advice - as in, needs to physically attend a course, and you know you're like that - then 'just' the book may not work for you.

Of course, 'just' the book may not work for me either.. we'll find out I suppose!

NoseyNooNoo · 31/12/2011 17:03

Knitterati - the Katharine Graves CD is just a copy of the Mongan Method course - you'll find that even the image on the CD is a very close copy to the Mongan Method imagery.

I think you are better off using the original Mongan Method materials - or even better taking a course. You can find your local practitioner at:
www.hypnobirthing.co.uk

Loveinasnowyclimate - a HypnoBirthing Practitioner will help you to deal with those fears, get rid of them and replace them with an image that will stay with you of a birth of your choosing.

Good luck!

PreggoEggo · 31/12/2011 18:49

i've read the mongon method book and listened to the CD since 32 weeks, I have found the book has really helped me put things in perspective and I feel a lot more positive about the birth (planning a home one now!). This is DC3 and my second DC left me a bit scared about childbirth as it was so fast and scary but the book has certainly eased those fears. I was worried about some of the breathing techniques so I found someone who practices hypnobirthing and just did one session with her (as i have had two previous DC's she said i didnt need the full 3/4 course) but she has given me audio and things to read which has also helped.
So i suppose what Im saying is I'll let you know in a couple of weeks when DC3 arrives if just reading the book/audio is enough! I hope so! I think it will be, it has made a huge difference to my mindset towards birth.

Bibulus · 31/12/2011 19:50

My aunt is a hypnobirthing practitioner and she advised me to do a course if possible, as it's much easier to learn that way and be sure you are using the correct techniques. However she did also say that as long as you are disciplined with yourself with preparation, you could teach the techniques to yourself as well - and since I haven't got either the time or the money to do the course, the CDs and books will have to do!

I got the Natal ones btw

tarabecon · 02/01/2012 03:19

HypnoBirthing, The Mongan Method is the original and Gold Standard of Childbirth Education Courses using Hypnosis. It is wonderful - for mother, husband/partner/companion and baby. It is complete , and it WORKS.
Have a Beautiful Birth!!!!!!!

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 02/01/2012 03:58

I really enjoyed my Hypnobirthing course (Mongan) - we did it instead of NCT or ante natal classes and it was a really good way of getting DH actively involved. I read the book cover to cover beforehand and listened to the CD every night and the course covered so much more than just those things did, plus the course leader is now on standby in case the baby needs turning or DH flakes out on me or anything like that as she includes follow up calls and care as part of the course, essentially, which gives me a lot fo confidence.

I also second that if the hypno CD is freaking you out then you probably need a 1 on 1 session with a qualified hypnotherapist to try and work through whatever it is that's holding you back...

PodPea76 · 02/01/2012 10:49

I'm also considering the natal method, partly because it's half the price and seems to have good feedback too. Was going to do the course as well as usual NCT class, as figured best to be completely prepared, anyone know if that's ok? . This is my first, so completely clueless of what to expect

ilianora · 02/01/2012 18:53

im doing natal hypnotherapy and have cd and ihypnobirth app. i dont feel like i need anymore because im doing quite well so ive given the courses a miss

MagnumIcecreamAddict · 02/01/2012 20:26

I used the natal hypnotherapy CDs and did the course. Tbh I probably didn't gain much more from the course, but I was pretty committed to giving the CDs a good go.

The CDs are brilliant. I really can't recommend nh enough. I had a good birth. Not pain free but totally in control. Less than 6 hours proper labour and just gas and air plus tens. About to start ttc no2 and this time will not be even remotely nervous about the birth!
I used the birth prep cd and did use the birth music and birth prep at home but not to take in. Also brilliant for helping me get to sleep in late stages of pregnancy.
Good luck to all.

MockCroc · 02/01/2012 21:09

I have bought the natal hypnotherapy book and cd but since then have discovered that where I live is awash with hypnobirthing practitioners. Will I confuse myself if I do the Mongan course but use the natal cd?
Thanks Thanks for this thread OP and all the useful advice from everyone! Smile

SirCharles · 04/02/2012 21:10

mockcroc did you get an answer to your question? I am wondering the same!

littlemissnormal · 05/02/2012 11:44

I'm waiting on my Mongan CD to arrive from Amazon. The courses round here are £350 which I would rather put to use somewhere else but having given up smoking 5 years ago via hypnotherapy I'm hoping that maybe my mind is quite open to it??? (please!!!!!).

I've also found an iPhone app which I've downloaded and I do try REALLY hard to concentrate on it but it seems to insist on making me fall asleep when I listen!

When would you start to really try learning it? Am 26 weeks now, is that about right?

SirCharles · 06/02/2012 13:59

littlemiss what iPhone app have you found?
No idea when you are supposed to start the CDs. If they come with instructions please do share! Good luck

Noodles81 · 06/02/2012 18:10

Hi ladies,

I am due on Friday and have been using just the CD and read the book from Mongan www.amazon.co.uk/Hypnobirthing-Natural-Approach-Comfortable-Birthing/dp/0757302661/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1328551643&sr=8-3

It's been really great so far - i was scared of childbirth and just the fear of the unknown but it has TOTALLY changed the way i see birthing and has made me feel nothing but positive and excited about the birth rather than anxious and nervous.
Will let you know soon if it works on the actual day!
