I'm having an elective c/s on the 30th, Cons says I will be allowed out the next day if I'm "up and about" and as long as all is ok, the fact it will be NYE, they like to get everyone home if they can Hmm . Previous C/s have been emergency ones and I spent 5 nights (emcs 1) and 4 nights (emcs 2) the last times.

I'm nervous about this early discharge! Do they just want rid of me? It is baby#3 after all. Will someone come and see us and check that we are ok the next day?
I have a 6yr old and hyper 4yr old at home, and a very capable DH, but no other "help".

Would you stay in hospital another night or come out? I don't know what to do..

Ok, I didn't have a CS but one day? After major surgery? With a baby you have to lift and other children running about at home?

I suspect I would rather stay in - it's not like I would be up partying on NYE after all.

sunnysunchild · 19/12/2011 16:47

DoesntChristmas - I know!!!! I suppose my recovery will depend on how early I get the CS the day before. Cons was also talking rather scarily about #3 C/s and Uterus's not contracting as they should (cos of scar tissue) and me needing a drip up for a while.. Yet they want to boot me out asap....

headfairy · 19/12/2011 16:51

I had a cs on NYE 2 years ago and they were in no hurry to boot me out the next day (the fact that I collapsed in the loos the next day can't have helped). I would be very wary of leaving hospital so soon. Maybe 36 hours maximum.... but if you have the slightest concerns about your mobility I would ask to stay in a bit longer.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2011 16:54

I can see their point that they want as few patients in as possible but there are limits.

billgrangersrisotto · 19/12/2011 16:56

I was dying to get out of the door as fast as I could!! Hospitals are the worst place to recover, so noisy and hot, lights everywhere so it's impossible to sleep. As soon as you're ok medically, get yourself home and into bed with the new little one. DH can look after the other DC as well as you!!

xkatyx · 19/12/2011 17:14

Im booked in on Wednesday for my csection and I was told 2/3 days depending on mine and babies recovery

But they did say they like to have all mummy's and babies home for Xmas if they are able!! But if you dont feel up to it them it's diffrent.

I think they assume every wOman wants out ASAP!

This is my first csection so I dont have a clue whether or not I'll be out by Xmas or not

On another hand my friend had a csection and went home 6 hours later!!! I was shocked but it was her choice

BelleRomford74 · 19/12/2011 17:43

My 1st c/s was emergency & I was allowed home after 2 days...but I needed lots of help to even look after myself let alone baby for at least another 3 or 4 days!! My 2nd was elective & I had drains & stitches instead of clips & recovery was much quicker & easier...up & about the next morning... not discharged but able to be transfered with my dd to another hosp as she was very poorly!! Having elective this time too in 8 weeks & I must say the idea of being allowed home next day excites me as I hate hospitals so fingers crossed for a straight forward procedure & quick recovery. P.S Must add though with my 2nd I tried to get out of bed earlier because I just wanted to be with dd as we were told she might not make the night & staff would'nt let me attempt to get out of bed til next day & me being transfered next day was at my insistance ...well brutal determination really.. I was up, showered & dressed by 7am waiting for transfered but it was a painful struggle..so I think to be honest 2 days in hospital is more sensible.

I am having an ELCS on Friday (eek!), my first one (though third birth). One midwife has told me 24 hours then home which I was thrilled about as I could be back for Xmas. However, another has said it's better to stay in two nights, even if you leave early the following morning, which I am hoping to do. Then at least I am back on Xmas day (and we are 'moving' Xmas day to boxing day anyway for DD 1 & 2!). Guess it depends on the hospital, who is on etc.
I am still secretly hoping that I am so well after that I can leave 24 hours after, but that may be just wishful thinking!!

Pingpong · 19/12/2011 20:37

I was in for 3 nights after CS1 and 2 nights after CS2 - this was due to a change in guidelines at the hospital. I really don't think I would have been ready to leave after just one night. I also collapsed in the shower and had to pull the red cord for help. Hospitals aren't fun but I do think it's best to take 2 days/nights minimum to rest & recover a little before going home especially if you have other children at home.

tootssweet · 19/12/2011 20:47

I had emcs with dc1 & was in for 5 days - they threatened me with longer as I wasn't sleeping (sharing a ward with 2 loud snorers that I had to wake when their babies cried might have had something to do with it!)
Had an elective 6 years later with dc2 - was amazing by comparison out within 36 hours & so much happier with the experience. Fingers crossed for you op that things go as you wish them to!

sprinkles77 · 19/12/2011 21:10

I think if you have good help at home, and everything goes smoothly, you will be more comfortable and sleep better at home. But only if you can be sure of basically being able to stay in bed for at least 2 days when you get home and other people doing everything (looking after other DCs, cooking, tidying, changing new baby). If I have another CS I shall be discharging myself as soon as the catheter is out provided baby is well and I am capable. In terms of pain relief, my morphine was withdrawn after 24 hours, and I just had ibuprofen and paracetamol, which I found fine. I had a visit from a community midwife the morning after I got home (I got home at about 7pm, CS 3 days earlier at midday). If you have the CS on the 30th and are discharged on the 31st, hopefully you will get a visit on 1st Jan. You could call your community midwife (if you don't already have it, call your GP or maternity unit) to check this is what will happen. If it's not available, maybe insist on staying in till the 1st (but then you might get trapped by the lack of staff to arrange discharge and end up in till the 2nd).

Whenever you are discharged, if you have any worries or dramas, you call the midwifes, GP, NHS direct or if serious (big bleed for example) an ambulance.

maandpa · 19/12/2011 21:33

I got told this as well when I had my dd2. I like you was appalled and terrified of getting home and being in pain, and not coping. In the end I stayed in 3 nights, no mention of a quick discharge!!!

Meglet · 19/12/2011 21:36

I wouldn't. 2 days would be do-able, but 1 day is pushing it.

I stayed in for 3 days after my EMCS and planned CS.

Bollocks to the consultant, stand your ground!

Nevercan · 19/12/2011 21:40

I had dd2 by elective csection at 8am and in was signed out at 12 noon the next day as I didn't want to stay in any longer than necessary. I don't like hospitals and found i got no sleep first time round. I was quite pushy though..... Smile

Nevercan · 19/12/2011 21:41

Sorry didn't read right to the beginning. It sounds like you would be better staying in longer.

schmee · 19/12/2011 21:42

I personally wouldn't have been able to be out 24 hours after my sections. My concern would be if you need to be readmitted for any reason then you might find it a bit slower/trickier over the New Year period. Also, your community midwife may not be available during that time.

Also, with two older DC it's going to be a bit tricky and you presumably don't want them to see you looking too under par.

Can you get your cs scheduled for a different date?

NorthernNumpty · 19/12/2011 21:42

I had emcs at 9:30am and was home by midday the next day. I was fine, and v glad to get out of there!
I appreciate it might be different with DC already at home but provided all well they seem happy to get you out as soon as you are ready, I think if I had wanted to stay they would have let me

maandpa · 19/12/2011 21:48

Just to add it was my 3 C section, and planned. And I felt I needed to be in hosp for 3 nights. I was glad to get home though :-)

sunnysunchild · 20/12/2011 17:52

I can't reschedule c/s now, but can only hope I go into labour sooner! No signs of it at the moment though!

Hummm seems a mixed response, think I will just have to wait and see how the op goes, and how we both are afterwards. I couldnt care less that it is New Years Eve the next day.

I think if the hospital is busy on the 1st night, and I have an awful sleep etc, I might be more inclined to go home the next day. But if its quiet, then I think I'll stay in. Its other people's noise that bothered me last time... Maybe I should take ear plugs?? LOL
Thanks all..

Only just seen this thread but to say i discharged myself 17 houes after my c section. I hated hospital so much i asked them to take the catheter out and i was off! I could barely walk though. The car journey was pretty agonising. It was my first baby and i had an independant midwife.

People thought i was fine as i was home so visitors piled in. Im due an elcs with dc2 in 6 weeks and had to promise not to discharge myself again. It was very difficult. Needed help out of bed, out of bath, my mum looked after the house, dh looked after me. I dont think i'd dare be at home straight after with my dd wanting to climb on me etc. If you have other kids and little support i'd try to stay in a few days if you can.

LennyGodber · 24/12/2011 14:13

I had emergency CS following a very long labour and only stayed 24 hours. I felt fine and found it a lot easier to cope at home (didn't have any other kids then though!), but the care on the post natal ward I was on was non-existent :)

The community midwives will come to see you at home, but if you don't feel well enough to go, don't go. Try not to worry, you should get a big fuss made of you as the ward will likely be very quiet. Good luck!

Purplehonesty · 24/12/2011 21:31

I had emcs on the Tuesday and they wanted me to go home
On the Thursday. I said no and stayed til friday. It was my
First baby, I had a private room and the food was great! Seriously tho the next day is far too soon, even tho the nurses never helped me with anything or with ds I felt more confident being in hospital just in case. It's really sore to walk about and I wouldnt have wanted to go up and down my stairs at home the day after the op!

harrygracejessica · 25/12/2011 01:03

I had what thy class as emergency c-sec with twins and left 24 hours later. They were in scbu but it was actually more tiring having to visit
hospital daily and have a toddler at home than have the babies at home. With my first I was in 2 nights and with the 2nd lot of twins i was in 3 nights but that was because one was ill in scbu.

charlie7 · 25/12/2011 14:09

Just an update on my reply to this thread. I had my section on Friday at 10am, it went really well, up and walking 6 hours later, catheter out etc. I went home at 4pm the next day (yesterday) as they were happy with my recovery and with baby feeding etc. It is my 3rd baby though.
I probably wouldn't have asked to go home if it wasn't Xmas eve, but I slept badly at the hospital and wanted to get to my own bed.

Midwife came this morning and all is fine, I feel ok apart from being tired. I also am aware that I shouldn't be doing much and have been taking it really easy.

schmee · 25/12/2011 21:50

Congratulations - glad it is going well :)
