ectopic pregnancy?

Is anyone being monitored for suspected ectopic pregnancy? I am now about to have my 3rd set of blood tests to check hormone levels (as scan showed empty uterus at 5 or 6 weeks of pregnancy)and I wondered if anyone has more information on the topic. HCG hadn't gone up much 48 hours after first bloods. Has this happened to anyone else who has then gone on to have a successful pregnancy? Also, does laparoscopy carry risk of m/c?

My HCG levels only went up by about 29% in 48 hours, and I still went on to a successful PG. If your periods deviated from a 4 week cycle, you might have ovulated late, and be a week or so out with your dates. Afraid I have no knowledge of laparascopy, as it didn't come to that - I had an internal scan the day after the 2nd blood test, and everything was OK.

Best of look.

aargh best of "luck" I mean.

Hi expecting. Yes, I had this with my 2nd pregnancy. I had some bleeding at about 5/6 weeks and empty uterus on scan, but my hormone levels remained high. I felt absolutely fine, no pain, no other symptoms. I had blood tests every 3 days I think, but they remained high and they suspected an ectopic. What puzzled them was that I was so well with no symptoms. I even went off to a Falklands Reunion (for dh not me) and the doctor phoned me while Jim Davidson was on with some results - and kept reiterating "if you feel at all unwell or get any pain you will come straight back won't you?". Anyway, after one more blood test, the levels still hadn't dropped so I was kept in after the last one for a laparoscopy. The laparoscopy was all clear, nothing untoward found, much to my relief. Two months later I was pregnant again and dd is now 2.7 and currently asleep upstairs!

Hope that helps a little. How are you feeling?

expecting · 07/01/2006 13:26

surfermum thanks for your message. Sorry to be thick but did you miscarry that 2nd pregnancy ( you said you were pregnant two month later)? Was the laparoscopy painful? Glad you got pregnant again :-) I'm worried because the HCG levels are low - they increased by much less than a third. I feel pregnant - all the usual symptoms. Thanks everyone else for your messages xx

Thanks Kayzed, yes my report also says I have a haemorragic corpus luteum. Don't have much pain though - just mild discomfort and spotting (not enough to stain pad). They will probably rescan next week but it depends on the blood results as they show whether enough HCG to show on a scan. Do you know if haemorragic c l can cause bleeding? Glad your pg is going ok - you must have been so relieved to see that sac when you were scanned :-)

Well, I guess it just wasn't to be. Had a nightmare that I was bleeding, woke up & went to the loo then realised I was bleeding. Fresh red with tiny dark clots. Now painful cramps and more blood loss. Feels like a very heavy period. Dh v upset but I feel flat. Maybe I will cry later. After loo I lay on the bed breathing deeply and holding my stomach to keep it from escaping. It's so mad what we women do in these situations (I read about women fishing their embryos out of the loo). My nickname was a tad presumptous I now realise but maybe I will keep it for next time

I had a ectopic last year. Don't rely on HCG levels alone, I think (check with ectopic pregancy trust website) your HCG levels need to be around 1500 before anything visible can be seen on a scan. Mine were doubling nicely as if normal and a re-scan showed my tube had ruptured and was in need of emergency surgery. Had they done my 2nd scan a week before, they could have done a laparoscopy and possibly treated my condition with drugs rather than surgery. (not all hospitals use this drug) If you get any pain whatsoever get it checked out immediately, don't worry about thinking your waisting anybodys time, you are not, ectopic pregancies can escalte (sp?) rapidly.

I hope this is not the case and all works out well for you.

are you OK ?

Mirage · 08/01/2006 20:18

Expecting, please go to A&E & get checked out.It could save your fertility & possibly your life.

My 1st was an ectopic, with no symptoms except a little spotting & mild stomach ache.Thankfully I was scanned early & had a laparoscopy.

I was lucky & went on to have 2 dd's within the next 2 years, but I bled heavily during both pregnancies with them,so had a few scares.

I hope you're ok.

expecting · 08/01/2006 22:14

Thanks for all your messages. There's no point going to A & E as EPU told me to only go if I got sharp pain in my lower abdomen - to either side. Cramps and bleeding don't count apparently. I am going to go to EPU in the morning and asked to be scanned then/laparoscopy. I doubt it'll be any quicker going to A&E tonight. Waiting times are terrible in this area.

Golds, did you manage to conceive again after your surgery? Sorry if this question evokes painful feelings but I've read the stats and just wanted to hear it from a real person. Also did you have pain before your tube ruptured and if so, what type of pain was it?

OP posts:
expecting · 09/01/2006 02:18

well after my post I started to get a pain to the right of my groin so went to A&E. Obs & Gynae dr was very confident that it's muscular or bone pain and said I will defo not rupture tonight or tomorrow!! Says I would have warning symptoms well b4 this. Frustratingly he cannot confirm whether I have miscarried. Have to go back to EPU for more bloods. This saga seems never ending. I feel sure it has gone. I am getting addicted to this site. Can someone pls tell me (as a relative newcomer)what the main abbreviations mean? I worked out that ds is son, ds is daughter, dh husband. What is IYSWIM?

OP posts:
expecting · 09/01/2006 02:19

oops i meant to type dd for daughter - its late and i'm delirious!
