honest to goodness if i'm told one more thing you shouldn't do in pregnancy or any more things that are dangerous for baby i am going to scream! Feel like i should turn spare room into a padded cell for me and bump until he's 3.

The list seems endless! I want to sleep on my back and use a baby walker ffs!

feel better now.

the jacuzi one is sensible, though. because the water is at the perfect temperature for all sorts of nasties and a cause for UTIs (which can make your membranes go prematurely).
a private jacuzi at home with fresh water shouldn't be a problem, even though too warm water can start contractions.

AlpinePony · 28/11/2011 16:46

How can too warm water start contractions? VIA osmosis through your abdominal wall or via the tidal wave of boiling water gushing up your vagina, you'll need to enlighten me
Because as in so many of these 'absolute troofs', the logic says no.

Lol@"are you sure spanx are safe?".

I like to keep the list of 'contraband items/activities' pinned up on the fridge door so when I'm raiding it for stilton, brie and pate I have something to laugh at ...

My favourite piece of advice was from some PFB mum who frowned at my Snickers bar and told me in no uncertain terms that: "Your baby could well have a nut allergy y'know. You should not be eating things like that!"

Have also been scolded for using a step ladder and hoovering the stairs ... sometimes I honestly wonder how the human race has survived this long ... Smile

On the random allergy front, I developed an allergy to pineapple when pregnant with DS. He is not allergic. Neither am I now.
Second pregnancy now, yet to find out what random allergy I may have this time. But it isnt pineapple, I had some a few days ago Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/11/2011 17:51

PS I licked the bowl when I made my xmas cake earlier. It had brandy and raw eggs in it. And I had pate the other day. It was lush!
If I were this uncautious about an already born DC, someone would call SS!! Grin

Bue · 28/11/2011 18:20

I know a woman from another forum who thought she wasn't allowed to have a bath. A bath, ffs! Something about body temperature again. Not sure anyone in the history of bath tubs has ever managed to boil a fetus in one?

Then there was the time we went out recently with some friends and my pregnant friend had a half pint. Our other friends couldn't believe it, like they thought she and the baby would implode on the first sip! They actually yelled, "Oh my god, she's actually going to drink the beer!" Confused

kiki22 · 28/11/2011 18:31

LMAO 'oh my god she's gonna drink the beer' i had one of those moments at a family party 'kiki what do you want to drink , cider n blackcurrent please, won't that harm the baby, yes he'll be born an alki now give me my cider'

beyond ur really living on the edge brandy and raw eggs! lol

off to hover the stairs now :)

I know, I know, I know.

The next person to tell me what to do will get a kicking.

BlingLoving · 28/11/2011 19:54

Aargh!! I so hear you. It used to drive me crazy when I was pregnant and I regularly find myself biting my tongue around pregnant friends who have ridiculous ideas about what they can and can't do.

What I can never work out is why normally sensible women simply accept ridiculous restrictions without even asking why they can't use a jacuzzi or drink caffeine.

I bathed throughout but did find that I had to be careful - if it was too hot I got dizzy. So I avoided saunas etc for same reason. Not because I thought I would be killing ds.

There was a woman on here once who was totally furious her mother had made her a fish pie, sans prawns, as "doesn't she know that I can't eat seafood because I am pregnant!" sigh.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 28/11/2011 21:07

Ahh, what bugs me more are stupid people

Such as a woman who was pregnant when I was having DS who'd pull catsbumface at certain things I ate...

She wouldnt eat philidelphia as soft cheese was "banned"...

But she ate brie NEARLY EVERY DAY Grin

kiki22 · 28/11/2011 21:15

Really just living life is dangerous for your baby, i'm pretty sure they would stick us all on a tread mill in a padded room and feed us multi vitamins for 9 months if they could!

goodnightmoon · 28/11/2011 21:33

you've really got to weigh up the risks (nearly all extremely minuscule) and use your own judgement.

my favourite incident was being at a wedding - i had a glass of champers and some of my drunken acquaintances were saying - oh that's ok to have one, one can't hurt.

i said - oh it's my third actually, mainly just to see their faces. (it was my second, for the record.) Grin

sprinkles77 · 28/11/2011 22:20

Just remembered, following goodnight's post. I had a glass of champagne at a wedding when about 30 weeks pg. gave me such a bad headache for so long (nearly a week) that I got admitted to hospital with suspected pre-eclampsia. What a waste of time! Haven't had any champagne since! Good reason to avoid.

AlpinePony · 29/11/2011 05:02

kiki I'm not sure that would work - you shouldn't exercise if you're pregnant right? Wink Here, just sit on this couch and have some hobnobs (nut and chocolate(caffeine!) free). And the padded walls could suffocate your baybee, you've really not thought this through have you?

buonasera · 29/11/2011 07:40

It's the allergy one that really takes the cake for me... I've got birch pollen allergy which means I'm allergic to raw apples, apricots, cherries and almonds and I get a bit funny round raw tomatoes. Now I'm up the duff can also add pears to the list... I mean christ, who's allergic to pears? If I avoid that lot, the wee ones won't see fruit until they eat it themselves...
also enjoy the sheepish way midwives tell you it's OK to eat peanuts if you're not allergic. "But wait! Last time you swore blind that if I ate peanuts the wean would get a peanut allergy!" "Yeah, turns out it might be avoiding peanuts that gives the allergy... or something else... we don't really know." Aye, she tried to sneak that one in at the end I noticed. They must know you're thinking, wait, if the peanut stuff was all bullshit... what about the rest?

mousymouse · 29/11/2011 08:54

the thing about those recommendations is, that they are a great big study for the medicinal profession.
every few years all pregnant woman a told to avoid this and that and do this and that and a few years later they see that actually it did no harm/more harm/less harm than the recommendation they gave the previous few years...

kikibo · 29/11/2011 12:30

About the 3D movies, Gypsycat, I have never gone to one but I am quite sure they will make me nauseous and i am not pregnant. It has everything to do with travel sickness: your inner ear thinks it is sitting still on a chair, but your eyes see things moving, as they do in cars, trains etc. The discrepancy between your brain ('I am sitting still') and what it sees ('I am sitting in a car, so I am moving') creates nausea. So also in 3D movies.

Really, pregnant women will be a little more susceptible to nausea, but it is by no means dangerous, unless you don't like it...

You could also get nauseous in a rocking chair, for that matter.

Ooh, I think that's another no-no then? Grin

Missgiraffe1 · 29/11/2011 13:47

I have to admit though, I am using one to my advantage. Pregnant women shouold avoid coming into contact with, and inhaling, chemical/fumes. My husband has now taken over the cleaning of the en suite showers.
I am happy to accept that - for me - this would be a VERY dangerous activity and must be avoided at all costs Wink

kiki22 · 29/11/2011 19:43

OMG Alpine your right this baby is never gonna make it with a mother like me hehe

Mum2be79 · 29/11/2011 21:37

I got fed up at 30 weeks and started doing/eating/drinking all the things I'm not supposed to.

The way i see it - my mother did it, my Gran did it and most probably my great-Gran did it. They can do it I CAN DO IT!

littlestressy · 29/11/2011 21:59

I had a massive portion of trifle on Sunday and was told (as I raised the spoon to my mouth) "But you can't eat cream!" Cream!!

Various others have also said I shouldn't eat cheese (cheddar!!!), mozarella, parmesan and philadelphia. I would have starved if I couldn't eat those things.

Ate runny poached eggs yesterday. Lush Grin

startail · 30/11/2011 09:12

I was pregnant before the 3D movie craze, but it is the only time I get car sick.

Got a very Hmm face from my sister for munching M&S prawn sandwiches.
Explain that I was not giving up their sandwiches or my local Chinese takeaways king prawns haven eat both so often without incident.
I did avoid prawns from other places having once had full-blown food poisoning, when not PG, of prawns on holiday.

MockCroc · 30/11/2011 14:40

According to a certain leading spa chain you can't have any form of massage in your first trimester (even without aromatherapy oils) because the "stimulation" might cause you to miscarry. Similarly you can't have any type of facial because they rub your face and the scent of the (non aromatherapy) moisturiser might cause you to miscarry. I did not enjoy having my nails painted though...

I managed to have salmonella while pg, which I assumed was an absolute disaster because of all the hype about it. Every doctor and obstetrician I asked about it looked at me blankly and said that they couldn't see how it could harm the baby unless I became so wiped out I required hospitalisation. Not that I recommend salmonella. It was gross and horrid.

DonkeyTeapot · 30/11/2011 15:08

I also ate all the "banned" stuff, before I found out I was pregnant. Once I did know, there seemed little point in changing my diet then. The only thing I did do was reduced my caffeine intake, because I was told it inhibits iron absorption, and I tend towards low iron levels anyway.

Made me laugh how two girls I knew were both being complete martyrs about not touching a drop of booze but were happy enough to continue smoking.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 30/11/2011 16:23

MockCroc, I was refused any form of massage by a spa hotel because they did not want the risk of massaging a pregnant woman. I was 8 months pregnant at the time. They wouldn't elude as to what those risks were. I too had to make do with nails being painted and they did a shit job of that!
