Nauseous people - what do you eat??

I know I have to eat right now. What can you all cope with? I hate the feeling of needing to eat but not being able to face anything in particular. And the thought of most things makes it worse. I haven't got any biscuits or crackers which are the things I think I could eat. I've eaten a bagel and some chicken today. Maybe I could force down a banana if they're not going brown. That might make me feel better enough to eat something else.

Just a rant. I haven't even been sick yet (7.5) and lots of women have it much worse.

Thankyou, I think I may go and pick up some zinc today and give that a try.

If I mix it with banana, whilst wearing sea bands maybe I can start fighting this damn nausea!! Grin

swampster · 22/11/2011 17:41

Be aware that too much zinc is dangerous. And zinc can make you feel nauseous.

For the first 13 or so weeks it was roast chicken, and roast chicken and some more roast chicken! I had to rotate butchers so they didn't think I'd lost the plot. I was increadibly sick and am still being reasonably sick (19 weeks in) I found having the chicken with salad and just a dot of dressing helped, also ginger helped, I consumed so much ginger I now can't touch it! The Fentimans ginger beer really helps.

Ahah! So pleased to have found this thread. I'm as sick with my 2nd pregnancy as I was with the 1st. Started at 7 weeks and only stopped at 25 last time- oh joy.

I'm sick 15-30 times a day. Moving sets it off. Driving is tricky, with a dog poo bag ready. Even having to get up at2am for a puke, then need to eat again.

I can't go near the fridge, bin, dishwasher, supermarket, dog food. Milk/dairy is like kryptonite- can't even make my toddler's evening cup. Hot drinks are out too. Husband is working flat out with two dependants!

I don't fancy food, I'm going to adopt the 'don't even ask me what I want' rule. So far, ok things are toast and marmite or strong marmalade, tomato pasta, lentil soup, salt and vinegar crisps, guacamole, apricot muesli bars, orange, banana and pineapple. Oh and top tip- grated ginger in diet cherry coke.

Roll on July - I hate being pregnant.

currently eating a big mac and drinking sprite - don't usually do either. really struggling. if i really think i want something, by the time i eat it i can't face it, can't face anything really. 7ish weeks with 2nd thought i was rough last time - this time it is starting to get me down - hope i actually bloom in the second trimester this time round.

abigboydidit · 01/12/2011 13:15

Twas fizzy drinks that got me through. Never went in for them much before but somehow the gassy burps they brought on relieved the nausea. I was one classy pregnant lady... Blush

Fishandjam · 01/12/2011 13:26

First pregnancy, all I could face in the first tri was toast butter and Marmite, and cheese sarnies.

This pg (currently 10 weeks) the sickness has been worse but oddly, I've been able to eat a greater range of food. Lemon sherbets have gone down well though!

Not letting my stomach get too empty has been key - and as buonasera said, not getting too tired.

YankNCock · 01/12/2011 14:01

I ate a whole cantaloupe yesterday. That wasn't helpful.

Also, white bread.

Peanut butter on saltine crackers (a USA thing, found them in a chinese grocery over here)

McDonalds french fries Blush

Lots of cold cold cold water

Fishpond · 01/12/2011 14:04

Yay it's not just me.

I am 7 weeks and have weird food feelings now - most of the time I really don't fancy anything at all. I'll have some little tiny voice at the back of my head that says "a bagel would be ok" or "pasta?" and I'll jump at the chance and it will taste ok at the time, and for the next 2 hours I'll convince myself I really did want that all along...

But then back to the same "bleurgh I don't really want anything but now I'm hungry" and it starts all over again.

The only thing I've consistently consumed so far is orange juice - by the bucket. I've been craving some apple juice last few days though so off I go to the shops today to get some. Also going to try and get more bananas (I can always eat bananas) and peanut butter. I've been craving sandwiches too - pre-pregnancy I loved them but never really ate them much - since pregnancy (and I'm talking 2 weeks in) I haven't wanted bread at all. So this is throwing me.

Have accepted I'm not insane today and simply that my blueberry sized baby is already taking over my life Grin

I had thought morning sickness would be horrendous as in feeling 100% nauseous 100% of the time and vomiting about 50% of the time (and yes, I realize there is still lots of time Grin) but it's more horrendous for me in that I can never 100% say what I want to eat. Sad

Noodlemacdoodle · 01/12/2011 14:59

salt and vinegar crisps. And not ery much else tbh!

But they are not nice when you have stopped being pregnant, so enjoy them while they cut through the nausea!!

Jdub · 01/12/2011 15:27

I was sick with both pregnancies! Adored being pregnant though, but my staple diet comprised: macaroni cheese (waitrose or m&s), cheese & onion crisps, Dr. Pepper, and big Macs. And only towards the end could I expand my horizons food-wise! I even went off cake and chocolate for crying out loud!

wasabipeanut · 01/12/2011 15:34

Boringly bland carbs for me. I normally follow a fairly high protein, low carb type diet and eat pretty healthily but thats gone totally out of the window. All I want to eat is:

Chips
Pasta with no sauce - especially spinach & ricotta ravioli
Fishfinger sandwiches on beautiful soft white bread
Toast
Salted crisps (must be salted, any other flavour - not good)
Ice lollies/ice cream
Chocolate biscuits

I manage a bowl of fruit every morning and try to eat and least a couple of portions of veg in the day but I am struggling. 11 weeks tomorrow.

33goingon64 · 01/12/2011 16:01

I couldn't stand the smell of supermarkets, especially the fruit and veg section. I also hated the smell of food inside the fridge. In the first trimester my most hated food was things like salad, asparagus, strawberries, anything fresh tasting. I just wanted crunchy nut cornflakes, bacon sandwiches and pizza. I actually didn't vomit at all in first trimester but felt sick all the time. Start of third trimester I was violently sick a lot and as a result I can't face porridge or anything oaty now. Saw my breakfast again too many times. The one thing that always helped was the smell of lemon. A cool glass of fizzy water with a slice of lemon was the best antidote to nausea I found.

33goingon64 · 01/12/2011 16:12

Do a supermarket delivery maybe and then you don't have to make the choice of what to get in the environment with all the smells etc.

babybythesea · 01/12/2011 16:13

I started feeling nauseous in week 6, threw up for the first time in week 9 and vomited up to 8 times a day until week 24. So there;s the bad news! The good news is that despite constant vomiting, I actually felt fine from about week 14 so could eat half a meal, throw up a bit, come back and finish off and the rest stay down. And I didn't feel even remotely sick.
When I felt bad, I ate toast. And macaroni cheese. No idea why that worked but it did and I lived off it for weeks. Might explain why my dd loves the stuff!

I also found I was much better if I snacked regularly (a digestive biscuit every hour, and several before I even got out of bed in the morning) rather than letting myself get hungry.

I found though that I tended to eat foods based on what was best to throw up! Cereal is revolting so I stopped eating it. Toast, not so bad. And don't ever clap your hand over your mouth as you run for the toilet because all that happens is you puke through your nose...

babybythesea · 01/12/2011 16:15

Oh, and chips. Lots and lots of chips from about week 7. (Remembers being in very posh exotic hotel, lying by a pool in searing heat at about 3.00pm and asking a passing bar waiter if I could have some 'chips. No, not crisps, chips. Yes, the hot ones. Yes, I really do mean hot chips'.... being a very expensive hotel they managed it but I did also notice a few staff peering round the corner at the weird British woman who was desperate for chips!)

Likesshinythings · 01/12/2011 16:17

It was marmite flavoured crisps all the way for me. Wouldnhave starved without them!
I also found smelling orange essential oil really helped.

yankbabymum · 01/12/2011 16:19

Ginger biscuits were good for me, but only the posh ones with real bits of ginger in it. I had to have one before I got out of bed in the morning or else I'd puke:(

sleepatlast · 01/12/2011 16:25

9 months of vomiting all day and night. Jacobs crackers, donughts, more crackers. Failed with tomato sauces on pasta, anything fruit/veggie , curry.....had lots of sips of icy juice. Wish I'd bought shares in gaviscon. Baby was born good weight, I lost lots then gained loads on my breastfeeding cake and hot chocolate diet. Oops!

SilkStalkings · 01/12/2011 16:30

Google the Low GI diet - it's all about slow-release energy so there'll be lists of food that do this. The sudden pangs of nausea are your blood sugar levels dropping so if you can eat as many slow-release foods in your day, your levels will be more, well, levelGrin.

Quick fixes are: porridge/flapjacks/oatcakes, hoummous and other beany/legume things, sprinkle lemon juice on meals where poss to reduce GI even more. Pick the seediest bread options if you can face them.

Hi-juice squash (not the sugar-free kind) is also priceless - even if you throw up most of it at least you're getting a few calories staying down. If you're sick in the mornings, try a sacrificial pint of water first thing, throw it up then try a glass of squash.

OTTMummA · 01/12/2011 16:34

I've been walking around Sainsburys looking for something i am vaguely tempted to eat, i bought, 1 bag of clemetines.
Yep 45 sodding minutes and thats all that took my fancy.
Im not being sick, just feel constantly queasy, sometimes i wish i would through up just so i could feel a but better after, but i guess it doesn't work that way in pregnancy.
Was never like this with DC1. Sucks.

OTTMummA · 01/12/2011 16:37

oh and im pretty sure im now on some 'list' i clocked the security guard following me round for the last 5 mins Blush

Try enlisting his help! 'Excuse me, I'm early on in pregnacy and can't find anything I want to eat. Do you have any ideas? And in which aisle so that I don't have to walk past the stuff that makes me feel awful?'
