Grobag/Sleep bag confusion

Oeisha · 06/11/2011 21:59

OK, so I love the idea of these and will be using them. Amongst my many other confusions with them (pregnancy seems to make me overthink) is this...

Can newborns use them?

The grobag website and most retailers have a 0-3mths or 0-6mths catagory, so I'd assume so, but the general feel from users is they didn't use them for the first 4-12wks???

What have people done, and if not used before a certian time, why?

i got one for mine but she just didnt settle in it. i ended up with a swaddle blanket and she loves it. shes 14 weeks now and sleeps through the night.

ObviouslyOblivious · 06/11/2011 22:15

My DS was too small weightwise until about 6 weeks/2 months at least. His bag required 8lb 8oz. So he was just under blankets until then.

stottiecake · 06/11/2011 22:15

I've used them with both of mine from the start and they both have done fine in them. They were both over 9lbs at birth though - there might be a minimum weight yes yes - just checking 16 week old ds on lap in his sleeping bag and it says 'not suitable for babies less than 3.5 kg/ 7lb 7oz'.

Tangle · 06/11/2011 22:15

IIRC the guideline was that you shouldn't use them if your baby's head is small enough to slip through the neck hole. A lot of the newer GrowBags have additional poppers to make the wholes smaller, increasing the age range over which you can use them.

In other words - yes, depending on the newborn and the bag.

My personal experience is that DD was 9lb 12 at birth, and was into GroBags within the first week or so. Her head was more than large enough to make it safe by that point :o

RecursiveMoon · 06/11/2011 22:21

What Tangle said Smile.

Oeisha · 06/11/2011 22:27

That's what I thought. Thank you guys! I'm not normally this ditsy, but as I actually questioned whether my oven gloves would work and how, because that's properly amazing if they work, today then, well...I just like to check these things.
I'm particularly interested in sleepbags as if LO's half as active as she is in utero she's going to be thrashing about a lot, thus I can see a blanket being flung about allover the place. Confused

Not if you are co-sleeping, because they will get too warm.

PippiLongBottom · 06/11/2011 22:33

Mine have all been over 8lb so all three have used them from birth. They have all stayed in them until age 3 too. Well DS2 is in one now at 2.5 but he will be three when he stops Wink

Crosshair · 06/11/2011 22:34

Remember to buy the right tog as well. :)

Oeisha · 06/11/2011 23:01

Yup, been down the tog route already! I've got a mix of 1s and 2.5s as my gaff tends to get a little chilly (according to thermometers!), so will be layering LO accordingly.
I won't be co-sleeping. The paranoia of squishing her alone would mean I got no sleep at all! I'm bad enough when the cats are in with us...and no, they won't be in with me and LO at night. They'll just be luxuriating with DH instead.

I used a swaddle blanket for ds2 til about 10-12 weeks (I think. Pg again so brain fuddled) then into sleeping bags for years!!

Had discovered them til ds1 was about two months old but he used them too.

Hoping dc3 likes them cos I went a bit crazy a recent NCT nearly new sale and "topped up" my collection!

blueskydrinking · 07/11/2011 12:08

oven gloves - love that :)

same as others, DS was 9lb and wore his from the beginning, he's always been really happy in them (he's also a wriggler and I still use them now with him).

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 07/11/2011 13:10

thegingerone Do you use any particular brand of swaddle blanket. Am expecting no. 2 and want to use one as I didn't with no. 1 which in hindsight was a mistake as she was a very unsettled sleeper.

amyboo · 07/11/2011 13:21

I actually added extra poppers to some of DS's 0-6 month sleeping bags so that he could fit into them earlier. Over here in Belgium they seriously don't use anything else for little babies. DS (now 20 months) stopped sleeping in one at home and creche when he was about 18 months old, but was always very happy in them up to then. He was such a wriggly baby....

ChristinedePizanne · 07/11/2011 13:25

I used a proper swaddle blanket at first which someone lent me loveisagirl but actually found it a lot more of a faff than just using a baby-sized wattle blanket (is that what they're called? the ones with the little squares).

I switched to grobags when DS was about a month old - he was pretty small so it took him a while to grow into them but then he was in one until he was nearly 3 - they're a brilliant way of stopping toddlers from climbing out of their cots :o

homeaway · 07/11/2011 13:31

Some people use a woombie, you can find them on amazon might be worth a look ?

DontWantToHaveSex · 07/11/2011 13:50

I love sleeping bags - we used them every night for DS until a while after he turned 2.

I found that the Grobag ones were really expensive and couldn't see what I was getting for my money. The supermarket own brand ones (Sainsbury's in particular) are £12 or so, and do the same job. M&S always used to do one for about £16 too. And they were always on sale in TK Maxx.

Slumbersac sleeping bags tend to be cheapest on a website called Designer Kids and Baby (or something like that) and they also do the travel ones.

thegingerone · 07/11/2011 14:04

Loveis...I think the brand was something like "Swaddle something" honest!! I got two of them on eBay. My mate has lent me some this time. Hers (still in pack are Summer.) TBH hers has velcro and more tabs etc. The ones I had originally I recently spotted in Mothercare. There the yellow ones with a blue border, but I believe they come in other shades. I prob could have swaddled with a sheet but I found them handy.

thegingerone · 07/11/2011 14:06

Second the TKMaxx advice. I got a really brill travel one there five years ago!!
(Ginger realises her sleeping bag addiction/collection isn't a new thing!!wink])

thegingerone · 07/11/2011 14:06
Wink
Crosshair · 07/11/2011 14:12

How many sleeping bags should I have for first baby?

ChristinedePizanne · 07/11/2011 14:34

You only need a couple - one to wear, one to wash

Oeisha · 07/11/2011 14:35

I'm expecting a puker...in that if I don't expect one I'll have a breakdown at 4am when there aren't enough sheets/baby gros/whatever, that and there's a history of (admittedly allergy induced) projectile babies in my family. I've got 6 on the way and 2 travel ones to purchase. Hopefully that'll cover me?!

OooooooooH, Oeisha. Envy

I had one borrowed one for ds1. Four owned ones for ds2 and this time about (cough) 10 in wardrobe (various togs and sizes up to 36 months) Blush

Think I have only had a max of two newborn (0-6 mth) sizes last time and maybe three this time. Must do a stock take!!!

Oeisha · 07/11/2011 15:15

ebay! totally go on ebay. I got all 6 of mine for about £20. Figured if they don't work out for me then that was better than the fortune I would have spent new...
