24 hour heartburn. Please tell me how I can get rid of it :(

I stayed awake all night with this fireball in my chest. I couldn't sleep because of the feeling.

I thought it would disappear when I woke up, but it's been there all day, and being hungry isn't helping, as I think I'm aggravating it the more I eat.

I've tried milk, yoghurt, gaviscon...it's continously there. Just this ball of acidic fire in my chest, that won't burp out.

Anyone please got any good remedies?

WHat are you eating on the average day? I find my heartburn gets much worse if I eat anything even remotely spicy, onions included, so keeping it bland may help (though not really workign for me as my only real craving is things with LOTS of chilli in them Hmm) A lot fo things are surprisingly acidic, so I also avoid anything tomatoey for example. fwiw, I hate Gaviscon, the very mention of the name is enough to make me gag. Have you tried another antacid? I much prefer Tums, and when I was pg with dd scoffed them by the handful.

MrBloomsNursery · 05/11/2011 19:28

No, I'm not eating anything spicy - I've gone off curries and spicy food from the start of pregnancy, which is weird because that's my staple diet.

I'm just living off cheese sandwiches at the moment. That's all I've eaten yesterday and today. Maybe it's the cheese?

I haven't tried any antacids. I might have to go out tomorrow and get some. This is the worse feeling ever.

Apparantly heartburn means you'll have a hairy baby.

Fat, so dairy. BUT do drink hot milk as hot as you can and prop yourself up. Gaviscon aniseed is better than mint too.

I cannot stress enough how hot milk works better than anything else. And Gaviscon is free on prescription.

MrBloomsNursery · 05/11/2011 19:37

Hot milk? Haven't tried that. Okay, going to go and get a hot mug of milk and try it now. Thanks.

I have suffered this to Have tried remegel and renitadine ( prescription) but now nothing helps at 30 weeks. Have been sick all last night. I try to sleep upright and eat little and often. Will be seeing a doctor again as I am so uncomfortable at the mo. So no you are not alone.

PosiesOfPoison · 05/11/2011 19:42

Fat, so NO dairy!! Not fatso dairy, doh!

Good luck with the milk. x

PosiesOfPoison · 05/11/2011 19:42

Had horrific heartburn but not hairy babies!

RosalindFranklinsNobelPrize · 05/11/2011 19:45

How many weeks are you. Heartburn can be a sign of pre eclampsia so you should check out the other symptoms and get your bp checked.

Heavensmells · 05/11/2011 19:47

Dairy really aggravating my pregnant heartburn even a cup of tea sets it off! Try a few days without to see if it eases.

Heavensmells · 05/11/2011 19:48

Pregnancy stupid pred text

pruney1977 · 05/11/2011 19:55

I find plain mcflurries are the best cure but not the healthiest

NoobyNoob · 05/11/2011 19:58

Oh God, its awful isn't it? I thankfully don't suffer like you, but I have it most nights and it's so painful it keeps me away.

I always have milk before bed, but I haven't tried hot milk so I think I will. Sleeping propped up and Rennies are my saviours.

countingdown · 05/11/2011 20:03

Some peppermint tea may help, but see your doctor and ask for a prescription of Ranitidine. This, along with a Gaviscon chaser, could help! I had horrific heartburn in both my pregnancies and delivered two very hairy babies!

MrBloomsNursery · 05/11/2011 20:36

Rosalind I'm nearly 31 weeks, and have no problems with blood pressure etc, but will keep an eye out for other symptoms - thanks!

Ah, so fat/dairy aggravates heartburn! I have been having ALOT of cheese lately with all my food which explains everything.

I've just had my hot mug of milk and things seem to be calming down a bit. Might have another before bed.

Thanks for the advice about the prescriptions from the doctor - I can finally use my maternity exemption card for something!

countingdown - I had mild heartburn when pregnant with DD, and she was quite hairy. A bit worried about the hairyness of this baby!!

Rennies, Gaviscon tablets, Gaviscon chews, Gaviscon bottles... all day long in rotation. And anything that's only available on prescription too.

DS2 is nearly a year now and I still find half-eaten packets of all the above stuffed in corners of coat pockets and bags. So nice not to need them now.

MistyB · 05/11/2011 20:49

I had problems with dairy in pregnancy, milk would sooth for a while then make it worse later. Prescriptions and Gaviscon can mask the issue, your body may be trying to tell you something. Could you try a dairy free day and see if that helps? Crisps (fat) and sugar were not great for me either.

MrBloomsNursery · 05/11/2011 20:57

Oh dear...I've had about 3 packets of McCoys crisps since yesterday as I'm craving salty crisps and cheese sandwiches. Brilliant. I think I know exactly what's caused this flare up now!!

I also suffer with horrid heartburn. I prop the bed up (sorry dh!), drink lots of milk and drink antacid like it is going out of fashion! I cannot stand the standard gaviscon etc, esp the consistency - I want to gag on it. I take something called magnesium tricilicate (sp??). Apparently it is an old fashioned remedy but it is the consistency of water, so very drinkable. V cheap at about £1.80 per bottle. It's available everywhere and has also highlighted to me a v cheap range of pharmacuticals (honey, lemon and glycerine mix for eg for cough mixture), which under a brand name can be way more than double the price.

blueeyedmonster · 05/11/2011 22:10

I have it again this time too and it's now nightly. Last time the only thing that would get rid of it was lemonade. I'm off to buy some tomorrow as it's getting really bad again.

Cutelittlecatlover · 05/11/2011 23:23

I'm only 18 weeks and suffering badly already! The best thing I've found so far is mint humbugs which only help for a little while but seem to work better than tums and rennies. Last time I had heartburn from about 34 weeks and used to swig gaviscon from the bottle, this time the smell of gaviscon makes me heave!

Oeisha · 06/11/2011 08:14

Citrus fruits are also known to cause heartburn/indigestion issues in pg women...dunno if that helps anyone of not, but thought I'dd add them in there.

my2centsis · 06/11/2011 08:34

Hi there, I find mylanta works wonders! The pills tho, the liquid tastes disgusting!! Also chocolate milk works!!!
As far as heartburn means baby will have alot of hair? Very false lol I had it really bad when preg with to the point of vomiting and she was practically bald lol
Goodluck!!

thegingerone · 06/11/2011 14:33

I'm 38+4 into pg no 3 and have had the worst heartburn in all pregnancies. My tricks to reduce it are....
sleeping on about four pillows, swigging Gaviscon (any bloody flavour at this stage!!) not going too long between eating, eating small ammounts, not eating anything naughty (Dominos pizza as a treat for my 8yr old last night meant I was awake most of the night) standing up straight and not slouching in chairs......and drumroll for the one thing that really really works.....
......Having the baby...Sorry but it's the only thing to get rid of it completely!!

thegingerone · 06/11/2011 14:35

Oh I also heard that almonds work to reduce symptoms. Not sure if they do because they contain a special secret ingrediant or whether it's the snack thing of giving your acid something to do!

roz1982 · 06/11/2011 14:36

Peppermint Rennies have been my saviour
