I'm 22 weeks pregnant and suffering regularly from one of the above, I'm not sure which!

It feels like burning from my throat and down my chest. I've read that this is common in pregnancy but just wondered if anyone had any useful tips/remedies.

I've got Rennie which sometimes work but not always and have also tried drinking cold milk...this soothes it for a time but it always comes back!

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile

I've got pretty much permanent heartburn now!

Doc will give you gaviscon, but mine won't prescribe me anything stronger although lots will.

The best tip I've been give is Love Heart sweets... don't know why or how, but they really work! It's only a temporary fix though but much nicer than gaviscon Grin.

My GP prescribed Gaviscon, & I find Milk with ice cubes in works wonders!..

Franchini · 27/10/2011 11:34

Rennies - peppermint, or spearmint - go to sleep with one under your tounge. Keep them in every bag, pocket, drawer, car, bag, coat etc that you will wear/use and make sure every friend/mother etc has a pack ready for use!!!

Jezzabell · 27/10/2011 11:41

Gaviscon Advance in big bottles on repeat prescription from the docs so it is free. Just a little sip helps almost immediately. DH suffers from heartburn so is happy for the free Gaviscon. I prefer the peppermint flavour nd just try and think of it as a minty thickshake! Peppermint tea can also be very soothing, make sure it's not too hot!

LouisaJF · 27/10/2011 12:19

Another vote for Love Hearts here! Two of them seems to do the job!

Bumpsadaisie · 27/10/2011 12:20

Get your doctor to prescribe Omeprazole (now safe in pregnancy) together with Gaviscon Advance Peppermint.

Take the omeprazole tablet once a day, and a swig of Gaviscon after every meal and at night and when you get heartburn.

I suffered terribly last time round but this time has been much better due to the Omeprazole. Combining it with the gaviscon has pretty much meant I have been heartburn free and have been able to sleep pretty flat even now and I am 41 weeks!

The getting up to wee is another matter though ... Grin

Have a look at your diet. I get heartburn after certain foods (am 34 weeks). Tomatoes, onions, dairy and fatty foods are the usual suspects. So drinking milk will help for a bit but then cause more heartburn!

Also eat little and often - no big meals at lunch or dinner. Also drink water between meals not with meals (generally).

Apples helped me a lot too randomly!

MiauMau · 27/10/2011 14:18

I'm 24+1 and suffering from the same thing. Found rennies better and the gaviscon tablets, can't stand the liquid gaviscon. It feels pretty random to me though, I only get it at night (I guess that it's because, I basically spend most of the day drinking water) and not every meal kicks it off. I guess that very rich food with cream makes it worse?
I also heard that chewing gum is good for it, because you're constantly producing saliva when chewing

mummytobe123 · 27/10/2011 14:38

Wow, thanks everyone. I particularly like the love hearts suggestion! Grin

I find greek yogurt is also good. I can regularly be found having a couple of spoonfuls straight from the pot!

I can't eat chocolate now , it's not worth the amount of heartburn. Mint Aero though is fine.... must be the mint! Grin

But I do constantly have Love Hearts on me now! Refreshers work too, but not as well.

SpicyMeatball · 27/10/2011 15:44

I go through a pack and a half of polo's everyday cause of my heartburn.
Its terrible! I'm 34 weeks now so hopefully wont have to put up with it much longer, but polo's do work wonders!

BedatHogwarts · 27/10/2011 15:50

Ice lollies work well too - I'm getting through about 3 a day!!

startail · 27/10/2011 16:51

Lift the head if your bed slightly. (I had piles of Cosmo mags under mine).
Faintly weird sleeping on a slope, but it doesn't give you the sore neck 3 pillows does.
Wish I known about love hearts, because I rather like them.

montysma1 · 27/10/2011 17:58

The doc or the hospital will give you Zantac (or the non branded equivalent). Its the only thing keeping me going.

SleepyFergus · 27/10/2011 18:01

Another love hearts fan here. When I was pregnant last time, they were hard to find, ended up getting them in River Island of all places!

But this time around, I've found them in BHS! Special retro sweet collection tins yet are doing for Xmas. Lots of little packs in a dinky tin for £5. Bargain!

harassedandherbug · 27/10/2011 18:54

Our big Tesco have them on 4 packs for £1.00. I looked a right weirdo...

Katiebeau · 27/10/2011 21:52

I suffered for 24 weeks in my 1st pregnancy and Gaviscon etc only gave minimal relief. This time I was prescribed ranitadine and nothing except minor heartburn occasionally. Bliss.

GreenandBlacksAddict · 03/01/2012 21:00

Thanks to whoever suggested club soda water - now on my 4th bottle and haven't suffered with indigestion/acid reflux for a week ! This has worked when Gaviscon/rennie/milk didn't !

Oeisha · 03/01/2012 21:39

I was told to religiously take gaviscon 30mins to an hour after eating anything significant. Seems to help much more than just taking it when I feel the need.

kiki22 · 03/01/2012 22:14

rennies with polo mints in between

shipsladyg · 03/01/2012 22:31

I don't even bother using a spoon with Gaviscon now; I just swig straight from the bottle. Rennies on bedside table and Zantac in the drawer for when I get really desperate

MilkywaysAndBump · 03/01/2012 22:37

ships I was going to write the EXACT same thing!! I take a swig from the bottle of gaviscon after every meal!! Have Boots heartburn relief tablets on the bedside table and Tesco mint assortment of sweets in my bag.

ShesAStar · 03/01/2012 23:42

I find the Gaviscon double action tablets the best help. If I can't get them I buy Gaviscon 'cool' tablets.

lisab1975 · 04/01/2012 09:40

I suffered dreadfully in 1st 2 pregnancies, eventually losing my voice due to the amount of acid. I'm 22 weeks and started symptoms about 6 weeks ago. i went straight to a Chinese medicine man who prescribed a herbal remedy and a moxi stick (insense stick which you burn close to your skin, for indigestion just under your knees)- I was very sceptical and it is early days but if I regularly take 2 doses a day (it tastes MUCH better then gaviscon) I have had very little symptoms and have not had to resort to modern medicine. I'll be SO chuffed if I don't have to resort to that revolting medicine every hour!

Chynah · 04/01/2012 20:06

Omeprazole was magic when I was preg with DD. Nothing else even touched it.
