My nextdoor's new granddaughter is Catherine shortened to Kitty, and I'm going to see her next week! Also locally we have a Catriona shortened to Cati, and my dentist is Katherina.

GoodKingGeorginars · 15/12/2005 21:16

like Amelia and Sophie. I don't really know of many little Sophies, maybe it's not as popular as we think. Really can't bear Paige I'm afraid, and Faye just sounds a bit drippy. I always think it's a bit dangerous giving a name like Summer, what if she's not a summery person? E.g., I'm a big heifer and I'd be mortified if I was called Grace, or if you were Hope and you were a misery it would be a bit grim, same with names that also really do mean something else.
Does that make ANY sense? I love name threads except I know I'm going to offend someone!

MrsSpoon · 15/12/2005 21:20

I like Sophie out of your list.

daisiesinaline · 15/12/2005 21:22

We were going to call DS3 Grace if he was a girl. Love that name!

Don't like names like Summer though, sorry. I actually know someone called 'Summer Day' What was her parents thinking? (that was her maiden name).

CaChristmasLista · 15/12/2005 21:24

Love Sophie, and Katie's pretty too.

Fave girls name is Isabelle though

OhlittletownofEIDSVOLD · 15/12/2005 21:25

Amelia - love
Faye - love - not common but nice
Sophie - very common here in Aus
Katie - prefer C/Katherine and then allow them to shorten it.... was a suggestion with our dds
Summer - nah
Paige - nah
Layla - nah

OhlittletownofEIDSVOLD · 15/12/2005 21:25

oh jsut thought - what about Faith instead of Faye

santabops · 15/12/2005 21:25

Love

Faye
Katie

not so sure about the rest, either too popular or don't like

lunaturkey · 15/12/2005 21:25

agree with dingdongmalory totally

Enideepmidwinter · 15/12/2005 21:27

faye paige and layla all sound like female impersonators names

feastofsteven · 15/12/2005 21:30

I like Sophia, Amelia and Katie. Prefer Leila to Layla (most irrationally!!)

saadia · 15/12/2005 22:41

Like Amelia, Katie (although very popular) and LOOOVVE Layla, I wanted it when I was pregnant both times with dss (didn't know they were boys), but lots of people didn't like it because it actually means "night" in Arabic and also Layla is the name of the female lover in one of the most well-known love stories in Arabic mythology - my family thought it was a bit "cheap" - "sounds like the name of a lap-dancer", as my cousin out it.

SilentBite · 15/12/2005 22:45

paige is appalling, please no!

Sophie is nice as is Katie

Don't care for the rest tbh

You could try doing something similar with a twist eg Sophia, Katya, Emilia.....

feastofsteven · 15/12/2005 22:46

I like Faith a lot more than Faye.

hativity · 15/12/2005 22:50

Katie very nice. Sophie and Amelia ok. don;t like the others

hativity · 15/12/2005 22:52

quite a pattern emerging I think

GingerBearingGifts · 15/12/2005 23:54

I love Katie, but then I am biased.
I also adore Della (but that isn't on your list)
Oh, and Susan (Susie) for some reason I can't explain.

Mum2OneAndBump · 16/12/2005 19:15

Thanks for all the replys, obviously we all have different taste & not everyone will like the same as each other.

Sophie was picked by me & dp & has sort of got stuck Dp says he is going to be calling her Sophie no matter what !lol

I choose Katie & Amelia which dp likes Katie but not Amelia ( sorry but don't like C/katherine)

Dp said Faye which i do not like & i said Summer which Dp does not like.

Layla was suggested by an aunt & we were thinking maybe middle name??

Paige just got added to the list & so did sydney but i am not to sure on either of them.So think they need to be scrubed!!

Looks like she will probably be called Sophie but still need to tackle the Middle name!!

Anyway back to the drawing board & getting the thinking caps on again, blimey i never thought it would be this hard

Sophie and Katie

I prefer Jessica and Rebecca personally

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 16/12/2005 19:34

I am a Sophie and I like it very much.
Paige reminds me of Knot's Landing.

XmasPud · 16/12/2005 19:35

Sophie and Katie are the nicest ones IMHO I know that they are both well known names but I can only think of one of each in our local primary and playgroup combined so not that common round here..
The most common names here still seem to be Molly, Maisey, Heather, Emily, Alice, fwiw

Amateurpsych · 17/12/2005 00:36

I'm a Kathryn and it's worked well for me so far........ though to my family I am Katy, anyone who I met after the age of 11 I am Kathryn (slight attitude on starting secondary school) I guess a name that can be shortened gives you all more options when the little one is older - but if you want everyone to stick with the name you've chosen maybe best to settle on one that isn't easily shortened.

FrostytheRickman · 17/12/2005 00:38

What about Caitlin instead of Catherine.

Harktheheraldcabewillsing · 17/12/2005 01:18

Tabitha
Jemima
Amelia
Scarlett - Always have since I read Jimmy Page called his daughter this when I was a teenager! [blush} embarrasing admission

chipkid · 17/12/2005 01:30

love amelia. I have a Kate whose first name is Josephine
