Which is the least revolting antacid? Any thoughts?

Yep, that wonderful pregnancy symptom of heartburn is upon me.

It's not helped by the only hot drink I can stomach is currently black weak coffee. I'm mostly on decaf anyway.

I went to the chemist and bought some gaviscon chewable tablets, but the sludge they produce is really thick and yucky and makes me gag. Rennies seem a little less gloopy, but don't seem to be as effective.

Can anyone recommend a good type/brand flavour of antacid? There are about 50 types in the chemist and I'll go bankrupt if I have to buy all of em!

Spearmint rennies are doing it for me, and lots and lots of sparkling water. I have no idea why that would help, but it does.

firsttimer78 · 18/09/2011 22:08

Rennie soft chews were the only ones I could stomach, but they're realllllly expensive. When it got really bad I was able to drink the gaviscon peppermint liquid, as long as I had another drink to wash it down. Vile stuff! Hope you get a solution soon.

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/09/2011 22:10

From memory I think you have to watch which types you take in pregnancy as the salt content in most of them is unbelievably high. Peppermint Gaviscon always worked for me, including the time I was producing so much stomach acid I had to spit it into my bin at work until I could get out to the chemist at lunchtime.

2BlackCats · 18/09/2011 22:11

Don't buy it go to the doctor and get it on prescription, Gaviscon tastes a whole lot better when you don't pay for it :)

Commiserations for the heartburn...

I've found fruit Rennie the best. The yellow ones are pretty gross, but the other three flavours are quite nice. They haven't got the weird texture of Gaviscon.

footyfan · 18/09/2011 22:16

Xpost with smalltown.

I like the peach ones: maybe someone should set up a Fruit Rennie exchange scheme!

HappyAsASandboy · 18/09/2011 22:20

Definitely fruit rennie. All the flavours are good Grin

CBear6 · 18/09/2011 22:20

Ranitidine. Available on prescription from your GP, take one a day. It's magical heartburn-busting stuff. I dumped Gaviscon around 32 weeks and switched to this, it saw me right through to the end of the pregnancy. And because it's a pill it doesn't taste of anything.

Bunsouttheoven · 18/09/2011 22:23

Gaviscon liquid is an acquired taste that grows on you, by the end of my pregnancies I loved the taste. Definitely get it on prescription. I found the tablets rubbish & just prolong the rank taste/texture in your mouth. Glug back the gaviscon, hold your nose if necessary. Grin

pruney1977 · 18/09/2011 22:23

I had two types of gaviscon from the doctor, but the best remedy I found was either sprite or plain mcflurries.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 18/09/2011 22:31

I second Rennie chewies. I didnt think they were that expensive but maybe I was just desperate. With DC 5 my hb started really early and drove me conkers.

They are like sweeties so if you have mobile DCs keep them out of reach. My DC3 pinched and ate a multipack of them.

He came to no harm (he has an iron clad stomach) and I phoned NHS direct to make sure but it gave me a real scare (did my pelvic floor no good at all).

Those lovely smoothie fruit ice lollies were good too. (thats what I told the rest of the family when they tried to eat 'mummy's lollies' anyway)

darksideofthemooncup · 18/09/2011 22:33

I swigged Gaviscon by the gallon in the last month of my pregnancy but it does nothing for me now. The only thing that helps me now is a teaspoon of bicarbonate of Soda dissolved in some water, it tastes RANK but works a treat. However, please check with your GP or MW that it's safe to do this in pregnancy if you want to try it, as I have a feeling that Bicarb can raise your blood pressure

thehairybabysmum · 18/09/2011 22:34

I used Settlers Tums, a bit less chalky than rennies. Fruit flavoured also.

I couldn't stand anything lemon flavoured when I was PG though, had to pick all the yellow ones out so I didn't chance on one when I was necking the at night!!

RockChick1984 · 18/09/2011 23:00

Cheap vanilla ice cream Grin it always cured it for me, or at least took the worst of it, and cheered me right up as well!!

MixedBerries · 19/09/2011 07:18

None of the antacid tablets work for me...the only thing that resolves it is Gaviscon Advance on prescription! I couldn't stomach it at all at first as the texture is really vile. However, after a week of sleeplessness and lack of eating due to heartburn, I soon got over that...only took a few days and now I think I quite like it!

mrsrvc · 19/09/2011 14:13

I swear by Rennie Ice. Everything I've had on prescription (apart from the ranitidene) tasted rank.
I sympathise, I am pg no3 and have had heartburn throughout each of them.

LizzyMathsWhizzy · 19/09/2011 14:22

Lovehearts work much better than any antacid I have ever tried, and they are quite cheap too! I've been guzzling them for the last few months, the sugar may not be great, but it does stop the heartburn. I didn't believe it would work, but gave it a go out of sheer desperation. Try it before you laugh at me... Grin

jaggythistle · 19/09/2011 14:40

Gaviscon Cool tablets are kind of minty and ok, they come in a handy wee plastic box for carrying about too. I guzzled loads when pg with DS.

aethelfleda · 19/09/2011 16:50

Thank you girls! I'm off to the chemist to get a packet of Fruit flavour Tums, some chewy Rennies and a packet of Lovehearts :)

And for some reason it's been better since Saturday night when I had a really spicey portion of curry noodles. Pregnancy. It makes No Sense!!!

Gaviscon made me vomit all over my desk at work Blush. I'm on Tums but luckily it's not plaguing me like it did with DD. Still 15 weeks to go though!

banana87 · 19/09/2011 17:14

I take Tums. Cannot stand Gaviscon or Renne.

saggybaps · 19/09/2011 17:45

I cannot take anything other than fruit flavoured rennies. Even prescribed Gaviscon came straight back up. When it got really bad prescription of Omeprazole transformed my pregnancy I felt sooooo much better.

eagerbeagle · 19/09/2011 22:35

Spearmint rennies. the equivalent no name brands make me really nauseous. They are on special offer in sainsburys at the mo :-)

hiccymapops · 19/09/2011 22:42

I lived on fruit flavoured tums for dc's 1 and 2, but struggled to find them when expecting dc3, then I discovered tescos own fruit flavoured tablets. Hope you find something that helps Smile
