Some of you might have read my thread this week where I was worrying about movement and I got sent for a scan eventually.

So today, I was told by my MW to expect the baby to weigh 8 and a half to over 9lb! Shock

Did anyone have a correct weight estimate? If not were there any surprises?

:o

Bigger babies are technically easier to birth due to the help gravity gives you. Allegedly. Grin

My Mum was told I was going to be 'enormous'. I was 5lbs 4oz at term.

SIL has been harrassed through every one of her 5 pregnancies. She has been told she will have huge babies, maybe needing induction early so that she can deliver vaginally. All but one baby born at term, largest 6lbs. Thankfully, she ignored them.

Colleague was told her baby would be 9lbs ish. He was over 12lbs. He walked out and complimented the delivery staff on an excellent cs. Seriously, he was blooming huge. Biggest baby the hospital had ever delivered. My colleague? 5ft 3". Ouch.

I kept being told I was having a 'very average' pregnancy and would probably have a very average baby.
He came out spot on the national average apparently (7 lb 9) and after the first fortnight tracked the 50% percentile in his red book perfectly, much to the annoyance of the HV who had just spent 20 min explaining to a student that no baby ever tracks the 50% line!

I was very relieved as my dad's family go for 14 and 15 pound babies! This isn't an exaggeration, I've seen the news clippings with headlines like "Largest baby ever born in Wiltshire!" Though apparently it's only head size that matters so they were never a problem... adult men all over 6'4" though.

SchrodingersMew · 22/07/2011 19:33

Dear lord! Over 12lb!?

My ex's brother was 13'13lb when born. Shock

Notcitrus I am exactly the 50% line, she said I couldn't get more average if I tried. But apparently the weight for the average now is 8 and a half to over 9lb....

14 and 15lb! Shock

I think this thread will make me faint at some point!

Spot on. They said DS was 559g and he was 560g delivered. Didn't get anywhere near term though and they get less accurate don't they?

Fuzzywood · 22/07/2011 20:08

Both mine estimated to be around the 7lb 7 mark, DD was 8lb 7oz and DS 8lb 8.5oz. DD was a 9 hour labour, all fairly uneventful until she tried to come out with her hand next to her head and I needed an episiotimy (sp), DS - 2 hour labour, no tears even though he had a big head. I'm only 5 4 and size 8 so fairly big babies (knew i shouldn't have married someone a foot taller than me Grin ). Good luck with it!

SchrodingersMew · 22/07/2011 20:19

Thank you Willbean :) I suppose the bigger he is must also mean the better he is growing?

Fuzzy Thankfully my DP is only a couple of inches taller than me. :) But he's erm a big guy? Very built with broad shoulders.

And out to your DD trying to come out with her hand beside her head!

She's my little super girl! Least her brother was better behaved on his arrival Grin

Piglet28 · 22/07/2011 20:47

My midwife said I had a small neat bump and would be surprised if baby was anything over 7lbs..... DS was a whopping 9lbs my bump really was all baby!

TanyaBranning · 22/07/2011 21:26

I was told my first would be 8-9lbs - was over 10 lbs!
I was told my second would be 8-9 lbs - was 7 lbs.

SchrodingersMew · 23/07/2011 09:16

Piglet I have a pretty neat bump as well. :o Completely solid though so guessing it's all baby too!

I don't see how he can be that big though, at 29 weeks I have only put on about 5lbs!

Fuzzy Awww. :)

Tanya Ouch at over 10lbs! :)

Average is 7.5lbs isn't it? as in 50th percentile...

i had estimate with ds2 of being about 8.5lb he was actually 9.5lb.. this one is supposed to be on the 50th percent line so i guess about 7.5, but they do say a lb error margin each way?

SchrodingersMew · 23/07/2011 12:44

Nope, my growth scan was exactly on the 50th percentile thing and she said that the average weight used to be 7.5 but is now 8 and a half to over 9lb.

I didn't want to believe it but after reading this thread the average on here is definitely over 9lbs.

was told DC would be on the very small side - somewhere between 6lb and 7lb at most (growth scan prediction). I gave birth to a 8lb 9oz baby...

Woteap · 29/07/2011 23:37

With DS1, I measured big on fundal height all the way through and at my last growth scan at 37 weeks he was predicted to be 12-13lbs with a huge head. Had a elcs and he was "only" 10lbs so they can get it wrong!! (although head still off the charts)

ilovesprouts · 30/07/2011 08:10

mw told me my son was going to be 10lb ,he was 8lb had him by cs after failed induction

FlyMeToTheMooncup · 30/07/2011 08:42

Didn't really pay much attention to DD's estimate, I think they predicted she was a bit above average and she was 8lbs 4oz, born on her due date.

With DS we were quite worried because the 20wk scan showed he was very big. The sonographer joked "ooh you've got an 11lb-er there!" Confused I had the lucozade test which came back clear, and I think I had another scan later to check if he was ok. In the end I was induced because I was overdue, and on the morning of the day he ended up arriving the doctor came around (incidentally this was the first and last time I saw a doctor throughout the whole pregnancy) and I said I was worried, fundal height was about 46 by then although likely due to flab and I was scared of tearing. She reassured me that as I had only had grazes in my first labour I'd be ok. She then felt my tummy and said "oh, he doesn't seem that big". He was born that evening, 11 days late, weighing 11lbs 14oz. That was quite a shock. I am so relieved they didn't predict it though, as I know many people who've been forced into CS because of big babies, and I am terrified of surgery. Bizarre though that the scan was correct and the doctor wasn't!

They said I may have developed GD late in pregnancy, his blood sugar was very low. It was an easy birth anyway, gravity helped I think :) he was actually jaundiced because of coming out so fast. Don't worry OP :)

kellestar · 30/07/2011 08:53

DD was picked up early as being small for dates, so we had quite a few scans, last scan said 6lbs this was at the main hospital MW's at my MLU where I went for antenatal appts said 9lb's on feeling me. DD arrived 6 days late at 5lb 13oz.

SiL was predicted a 7lb baby but she went into labour at 34 weeks and delivered a 7lb baby.

banana87 · 30/07/2011 09:48

Had a growth scan at 36 weeks with DD. Was told she was 7 lbs and dr tried to convince me that as she was my first she would be late and too big to birth. He tried to get me to have a cs. I refused, she came a week early, weighing 8lb 4oz no cs required!
