Hello!

I've only just become a member... I've been looking on the net if I could get a bit of support as I feel so down in the dumps at the mo...

About 10 days ago, I found out I was pregnant with our second child. We wanted another baby and because of my age, we were thinking it's now or never. I suffered a miscarriage about 18 months ago, I needed a D&C and they discovered a huge fibroid at the time. It was decided to remove this fibroid so as to increase my chances for a future healthy pregnancy. The op went better than expected as my uterus cavity didn't need to be opened and I was told to wait 6 months before trying to conceive again. As it happens, I am now pregnant 15 months after the op, so it all had time to heal well.

I had my first appointment today with the consultant. He got me so upset, I cried for 2 hours afterwards... He basically told me, that because of my age, my weight (BMI is 32) and my op, it was high risk and therefore the hospital I am supposed to have the baby is unlikely to accept me! He also asked whether I realised how increased the risk was that I would give birth to a baby with Down's syndrome... He basically made me feel awful and like a complete idiot for wanting another child. I am fit and healthy and I know that my op I had 15 months ago is not really a problem anymore (only problem is, that I should consider a c-section rather than a natural birth). I realise I am not the youngest and that I carry extra weight, however at a size 16, I find it hard to believe that I am the biggest mum out there?

I have asked to see another consultant as suggested by my midwife who was herself quite myffed by the doctor's comments. I feel so stressed about it all and just so worried now.

well, had my appt yesterday with the supervising consultant at the hospital and he has no concerns whatsoever with my pregnancy and me having the baby there. I do not even need consultant led care. At the moment, there is nothing that indicates that I will have complications and if there are, he said, we will meet them then. My weight is of no particular concern to him (sorry, but I am not exactly a whale and as someone mentioned above, BMI is not an absolute and nowadays many scientifics believe it is debatable whether it is the ideal tool to assess if someone is healthy or not). As for my age, he proposed an amniocentesis, like he normally does for women of my age.

I am a law student (yes at my very advanced age, lol) and as it happens, I've had to study today about discrimination, equality etc. and it did make me think about this forum and what babyonbord says. I think it's putting oneself on a very slippery road to make such comments, as it's not far from displaying some extremism. It is also judging people (judges belong in a courtroom, nowhere else) without knowing anything about their situation etc. Pregnant ladies cannot all be 25 with a BMI of 22 because we are all different and everyone should have a right to respect and fair treatment. I agree that everyone has to take responsibility for their own health, but that can never mean deny anybody treatment and care.

Thank you everyone minus one, lol for your kind words of support, much appreciated. xx

What a relief for you. Well done! Hope you go on to have a fantastic pregnancy and an easy birth. That'll show him.

lulu57: babyonboard has been reported, what she wrote on both your thread and mine was disgusting, lets hope something is done about her.

KaraJS · 08/07/2011 13:36

Glad all was well with new consultant, Its such a shame you had go through the upset you did! My bmi last time was 30, I'm also a size 16 and had no problems during the pregnancy congratulations

mopsytop · 08/07/2011 13:36

Well said lulu and really glad it all went well for you! Yay, now you can relax and enjoy your pregnancy.

buttonmoon78 · 08/07/2011 13:45

Good for you. It must be nice to be treated as 'normal' by someone. I hope you made a strong point about the 'nasty' dr.

Lulu57 · 08/07/2011 14:04

kh0609, I had a look at your thread about the risks of having a DS baby. Again, some comments are so incredibly judgmental. Babyonbord is not going to be impressed, but me and hubby have decided that I will have an amnio done. I am one of those ppl who like to make informed decisions for me and my family and I always prefer to know.

buttonmoon78 you hit the nail on the head! It's exactly how it was like, that consultant I saw yesterday made me feel perfectly normal, which is what I believe I am, kinda anyway, lol.

Check out pregnant and obese, babyonbord isn't having a go on that thread for some reason

buttonmoon78 · 08/07/2011 16:04

Odd isn't it! I had a 'fnar' moment on the thread which is about when you are classed as heavily pg. Apparently she doesn't feel heavily pg but doesn't do lifting or anything as it would ruin her nails. Obviously being a good mum doesn't stretch to anything that would ruin her nails - I wonder how she changes nappies etc!

I'm glad you feel better Lulu. There was no reason at all for you ever to feel abnormal. Enjoy the rest until the next panic!

Sewmuchtodo · 08/07/2011 16:09

Im really pleased to hear your news. Good luck with the amnio, and try not to stress too much......now go put your feet up!

addictediam · 08/07/2011 16:42

I am so shocked and appalled at babyonbord's comments. I dont have anything to add to this thread but I just wanted to make you all aware that babyonboard is a lovley kind poster (i remember her from a year or so ago) please if shes still going by that name dont mix her up with babyonbord like i initially did!

Op congratulations and my mum had 2 perfect babies in her mid 40's and she's also on the larger side (not fat, just not as slim as she once was! i believe its something to do with age rather than over eating)

ToriaPumpkinPasty · 08/07/2011 19:05

Very glad your second appt went so well Lulu Here's to an uneventful and healthy pregnancy! Wine (non alcoholic obv Wink )

ginmakesitallok · 08/07/2011 19:09

Haven't read the whole thread - but glad your appointment went well. Re your original appointment, remember that consultants see more than their fair share of complicated pregs/births (otherwise we wouldn't need them) and that can skew their views of pregnancy. Hope all goes well
