A new thread needed here already! Lovely Grumblin who started the second one, may be actually having that baby at this minute!

I hope this will be a source of support for present sufferers and ex sufferers alike and also worried family members.

I want particularly to mention my favourite feline FluffyWhiteKittens, who has been so invaluable a source of support on the old threads, and MOH, who has slaved to produce articles full of useful information and links to useful websites, LaTrucha, lovely CaramelloKoalaLover, Grumblin, NitNat, La, Lottie, Grandmagain, MaryLou, Cocoanuts and so many that I cannot name everyone for fear that the current sufferer may became annoyed at the long list...

Never worry about tmi or moaning. When suffering one has to discuss things that would make most people go weak at the knees and to have a good moan can help enormously with an illness where there is still a lot of ignorance and sometimes insensitive treatment.

It might help to remember - when you are at your worst - the words in that Eastern story.
'This Too Shall Pass.'

Morning all!

Hope you're all ok!

Going back to work was short lived it seems! Yesterday was my day off as I usually work Saturday and had a lovely day planned but ended up being in bed until dinner and being sick all day! Same again this morning when I tried to get up for work! Think Monday took it out of me and now I can't keep water down! Off to see my dr again! I'm 11 weeks now so keep telling myself I've got through the worst of it (or am I being naive???)

Hope you all have a good day! I'm going to do some more reading up on HG from the comfort of my bed!

seapie · 27/07/2011 15:20

Hello

Has anyone had any experience of being on prednisolone (steroids) for HG? I'm not allowed ondansetron.

Started them today - still feel sick but only dry retching and dribble (lovely). Managed to eat a whole sandwich without chucking up

Oh, and I got some ketosticks. Just tested and I'm on 8 (moderate ketones). Called midwife and she seemed a bit annoyed that I'd tested myself as it would only make me worry. Told me it was just my body telling me to eat more! I understand that it is to do with metabolism of body fat, so how can it test for dehydration as well?

Thanks

MOH100 · 27/07/2011 16:45

seapie I think it's because when you're dehydrated your urine is more concentrated so the ketone concentration is increased - along with all the other things that are normally in your urine. There's just less water to dilute everything. Your midwife sounds like a real genius. I think we should have awards for the most idiotic things said by docs/midwives.

louby86 · 27/07/2011 19:02

Oooo sounds like a fun game MOH I'll nominate my midwife who said "you can't keep water down and you're being sick about 20 times a day? Yeah that's normal, just suck on ice cubes, it'll stop at 12 weeks". Thank goodness my doctor is more supportive!

I got my ketostix today, think they're fed up of me bringing urine samples to the surgery! Haha!

Hope people aren't feeling too bad!

ElliottsMummy · 28/07/2011 17:31

Hi all, hope everyone is having a good/good-ish day :)

Had the bump measured again yesterday and it is massive!! Measuring 35 when it should be around 31!! Guess I'm destined to have another big, long baby - HG obviously hasn't bothered my little monkey!! Also my platelets have gotten low again so have to have yet more blood taken next appointment as well as stabbing me in the arm for my anti-d!! Did I mention I hate needles :( on the plus side my GTT came back fine so that's a bonus I guess! HG is being quite kind to me the last week or so - no random voms and even forgot to take my daytime tablet one day and all was find, still getting loads of acid reflux though - really annoying!! Any remedies out there??

Sending good vibes to anyone in the early stages and those with newborns!!! :)

theonlyhb2 · 30/07/2011 14:09

my midwife: you haven't had HG as you haven't been admitted to hospital.

I get broadband on 16th August, ironically my due date, I won't care about it then! It's OH birthday today, got him a rally driving experience and he got a new car today, his brother's old Mitsubishi FTO.....not sure that 2 sporty cars is the best idea with a baby on the way ha ha ha and also I had to ensure in my name, and have him as named driver as much cheaper. So we now must look really posh, a Celica and an FTO. So much for the Estate car we planned!

Today I woke with a sore throat :( I shall not get more ill! It's a pain as all stuff for sore throats make me puke. Any suggestions? I guess I shall make some nice honey and lemon later. Normally I hit the OJ but that is a definite no no!

Hope everyone is OK, Luce must be ready to pop now?!

xx

johnnyd1 · 30/07/2011 18:03

Ready to pop indeed HB ! Made it through my sister's wedding yesterday so all systems are go now.

Elliotsmummy get a prescription for Ranitidine it's flipping amazing stuff, definitely no other antacid anywhere near as effective.

Quick catch-up only today as absolutely knackered but totally worth it, wedding was wonderful. Felt amazing all day and stayed til the bitter end! Will keep you all updated as hopefully won't be long now.

Hello again, everyone, Lucinda back form Bucks. MOH and Fluffy Big hugs. Caramel lovely to hear from you, and the hand h olding sounds sweet. Grumblin you too...Did ice cubes do any good for sore bruised nipples?
How are LA and NitNat faring?
Aurgerbine I hope may be feeling a little better, when I went off to Bucks she was suffering badly.
Louby Poor you, I do hope you are a bit better today? That boss deservesto have his head held under a cow's behind, adding stress to your other woes. That puking sounded awful, you cannot work in such a state for sure. I'm glad the union is involved (couldn't possibly be an ex union rep, could I?).
EllliotsMummy Congrats on baby size!
Seapie That was a very unhelpful comment from the midwife, condescending, really, as if one doesn't worry without kesosticks...
Pearl Oh dear, those library pc's are tiresome. I hope you are soon back online.
Luce Wishing you a lovely quick water birth...
TheOnly Re; sore throats - here I am recommending ice cubes again!
Moh I've been sent an email, must read enclosure now I'm back...
Cocounuts how are things?
Angel Are you still away?

Bum, really meant to post before Lucinda got back:)
Busy first week of the summer holidays and suffering a bit from sleep deprivation.
Stupid comments from various health professionals include:

We don't like to give medication in the first trimester.
I had to drive to work with a bucket next to me when I was pregnant.
(both in my first appointment with my first pregnancy so didn't really know she was spouting bs and ended up in hospital a few days later :()

And in my second HG pregnancy from consultants at the hospital.
Have you tried ginger capsules? ( as I lay attached to a drip)

And my particular favourite, as I had been in hospital for the second time and still with high keytones on the third day,
Well she can't stay here for 9 months can she.
Tbf the midwife didn't look too impressed at that comment either.

Anyone due soon it's my birthday next Friday if you want to share cake :)

nitnatnaboo · 30/07/2011 22:57

Hi all,
Hope today has not been to pukey with the hot weather. Hope those around 10 weeks are getting the meds and RL help they need!
1st week over with. All of us are totally IN LOVE with Matilda, especially DS (age 5) who is going to take him with her when he gets his first house, and who wants the cot in his bedroom! My stitches are getting better each day and cracked nipples healing slowly! Went out for first time yesterday to Southport. Dreading it as having issues with serious milk leakage! Managed shops, coffee and public bf in Pizza Express, followed by feeding Matilda in car on seafront whilst DH and DS played in the sand dunes. An ace day. Matilda is a bit of a mystery on the feeding front. She has been known to cluster feed for 9 hours, then sleep for 5 hours at night (yay!) but then sometimes she confuses things by having loads of wind so you're never sure whether she has wind or is hungry AGAIN!
LAhow was your first week?
Good luck Luce!

Poweredbypepsi · 31/07/2011 06:06

hi just found this thread. I am wondering if I have this. I didnt have it in my first four pregnancies although i did have morning sickness pretty badly. This pregnancy i am feeling awful. I dont know if I am dehydrated because i am managing to keep very small amounts of very cold pepsi down - how do you tell? I am feelign dizzy mainly and wierdlu when i wake in the morning my chest feels tight although this resolves when i sit up etc not sure if thats unrelated (probably!).
I am on the verge of seeing a doctor or someone because i am actually worried i will faint in charge of my kids (all under 7 - 2 under 3). I dont have a midwife yet though who do i call?

fluffywhitekittens · 31/07/2011 09:14

Pepsi, how many weeks are you? HG usually occurs very early. Have a look at this website
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/009.asp
I would say if you are unable to keep any food down and if you are concerned you should get to a GP asap as there are medications you can take to reduce the vomiting.

Do you have people with you who can give you practical support? Get them to read through some of the websites if you feel too rough.

Have stroppy baby and keep forgetting to do the links properly Blush

LucindaE · 31/07/2011 10:06

Fluffy Iam sure you were lurking in case of someone desperate, and that is the main thing, so hugs of thanks again. Stroppy babies take over one's life... I can only second your advice to Pepsi (appropriate, indeed, that name, regarding miserable diet).
Pepsi, have you got kesosticks to test to make sure that you are not getting too dehydrated, as health professionals typically let you become so before taking you seriously and you can end up on a drip (I just avoided that myself by finding that Acupunturist, but it doesn't work so well for most!).
Fluffy I remember your quoting that awful remark about 'she can't stay here nine months' at the time! I didn't know about the ginger idiocies...
NitNat Ah, lovely about Matilda, the seaside and a baby too after much suffering, what could be better?Love the name Matilda, someone said that on this thread everyone has splendid tastein names.
theOnly That was a very annoying 'You haven't had Hperemesis' remark from that midwife!
Migraine someone mentioned this - forgot to respond yesterday - I agree there must be a link, I suffer from them and a lot of women with Hyperemesis seem to h ave the fun of migraines or bad period pains. It must
be hormonal imbalance of some kind.
How is Everyone? Louby Augbergine are you any better? Concerned for both of you.

Sorry been in newborn bubble for last 10 days! Hope all doing ok this warm weekend and not suffering too badly.

All going well, Lillian is adorable and of course worth all the suffering despite sleep deprivation and sore nips from constant feeding! And another reminder to all in throes of HG, it is glorious to not feel nauseous or suffer heartburn anymore but really do need to cut down on the choc eclairs now as no amount of breastfeeding will burn those calories!

Another reassurance, I know most of us worry about baby survival when in early stages of HG when difficult to eat/drink or retain anything but amazingly baby does thrive. Third stage this time for me was hard work and apparently this was because placenta so huge it was like delivering another baby! So please try not to worry too much about baby's nourishment :)

Nitnat glad to hear all going well w Matilda and so glad she's bonding with big bro. No pattern yet w Lillian but will have similar non-stop feeding fests then a good 3-4 hour nap and a couple of glorious 5 hour jobs in night so here's hoping for us both ;)
She and big sis loved Kew Gardens last week and I even managed to feed on move w baby in sling to keep up w 3yo! Caramel I wouldn't be without my sling, esp 1st time round, and Scarlett sounds like she just loves staying close to Mum, so doing good job.
Fluffy When I was in hospital the sonographer who did early scan also posed the good old ginger question whilst I was puking...
Pepsi could be dehydrated as per Fluffy and Lucinda's advice would see GP if not retaining food or much fluids.

Poweredbypepsi · 31/07/2011 19:39

hi thanks for the messages. I did go to the out of hours who sent me to a and e aparently i was dehydrated, had a uti and my heart was going crazy (150 bpm) because of the dehydration. Had so heart monitoring which showed it was fine just fast but then had some antisickness drugs and fluids through a drip. The fluids helped alot.
They said though that the only thing they can do is do it again if it gets that bad again.

I did feel a bit better for a few hours which was nice but now feel fairly rubbish again.

They were actually lovely and really helpful espeically the out of horus doctor who took me seriously as soon as i came in even before she took me pulse.

so just taking antibiotics now and trying to sip drinks slowly.

Poweredbypepsi · 31/07/2011 19:39

oh they even gave me the antibiotics in medicine form as they though it would be easier to keep down than tablets.

Poweredbypepsi · 31/07/2011 19:41

oh i did wonder if anyone here had preeclampsia because the doctor mentioned a link between preeclampsia and severe sickness - I have had preeclampsia in all four pregnancies the worst sickness before this was the pregnancy where i was sicker with preclampsia earlier and he was born early etc so its got me a bit worried!

fluffywhitekittens · 31/07/2011 21:03

I don't think anyone here has suffered pre eclampsia recently.
Have you been given any anti sickness medication or do they think it's the infection making you sick?
There are plenty of safe meds you can take if necessary, much better than having to be hospitalised again.

Poweredbypepsi · 31/07/2011 21:12

no they said the infection could possibly make it worse but they didnt think it would cause it this badly i have an appointment 17th august they said if it gets worse again (as in i feel faint again) i go bacl to a and e. they wouldnt prescribe anything.

fluffywhitekittens · 31/07/2011 21:51

This makes me so cross, in my first HG pregnancy the dr signed me off work for two weeks, wouldn't prescribe anything and just said if it didn't get better to come back. I just tried to ride it out, not realising that it wasn't going to get better any time soon and ended up hospitalised which could possibly have been avoided with early intervention.
If you can't keep anything down over the next 24 hours then go back and see someone else. Have a look at the websites, you can print off some information as many gps are not fully aware of how to treat HG.
Have you got a good support network a home to help with your other dc? You also need to rest as much as possible which is difficult I know :(

Poweredbypepsi · 31/07/2011 22:18

i was thinking of going to the docs on tuesday and seeing what my normal gp says although he is not well known for his bedside manner so i have a feeling it will be just rest and wait it out. My DH is being absolutley fantastic, i havent lifted a finger for days, we run out business from home he has done that, looked after four kids (two of whom are ill with some sort of temp and cold etc) and even planned my daughter presents for her birthday tomorrow. I moan about him but god i just couldnt ask for more.

nitnatnaboo · 31/07/2011 22:41

Ooh! Recommend me a sling please LA - no idea which one to get. Lillian's feeding pattern sounds sooo like Matilda. Tried her with a bottle today, just to see, and all OK, thankfully, so planning to make one of the cluster feeds from formula or EBM just to give poor nipples a rest!
