Rh B-neg blood, anti-D injection and post coital sex...TMI sorry

Hi all

I am Rh B neg and have already had to have the anti-D injection at 13 weeks due to a bleed. I quite often bleed (tiny bit) after sex - my DH is away and we haven't DTD since I got pregnant (am now 14 weeks). He's due back in the next couple of weeks.

Am just wondering - has anyone else had bleeding after sex while rh B neg - do you keep having to go back and forth to the doctors for the anti injection? Puts me off having sex at all really...too much hassle and obviously don't like the idea of the bleeding potentially harming the baby. I know what the answer will be but would be nice to hear from someone else who has the same "rare" blood as me...

Thanks in advance ladies :-)

Thanks Baby2b Smile

I've been more shocked how utterly useless m/w's are tbh - not what I expected at all! It's probably not their fault but all they seem to do is frantically fill in forms while I sit there next to them silently, answering yes or no every now and then, then I leave the room back into the scary world of pregnancy on my own! Find a normal dr's appointment a lot more productive!! Still, am finding that pregnancy is the time when we girls club together a lot more, my friends have been amazing and helpful and everyone wants to help. So still loving this pg lark...so far!

My DH and I have decided not to DTD at all as we're not really sure and it seems to be the case that any bleeding AT ALL means the injection and a possible risk to the baby. We're going to have to get inventive...1 Wink

Just to answer original question. Yes you need an anti-d at the sign of any bleeding.

I had a post sex spotting last night. The tiniest amount of pink on the tissue upon wiping and I have to go in within 72 hours.

Thanks ALovely for giving an answer Smile ...not the one I wanted but knew it was the right one in my heart of hearts! Hope the rest of your pg goes well for you.

At least you know if it happens again that you should go in. They explained to me that if it had aggravated anything inside the womb the blood could get into baby and therein lies the problem. Very common but any bleed means anti-d.

Am now abstaining from sex, not worth the hassle :)

I am Rhesus negative too and had early pregnancy spotting with both my DSs so had to go in for the injection at around 7 weeks with each, but noone told me this (luckily I had been reading about it before pregnancy and knew). My midwife in my 1st pregnancy dismissed it completely Angry. I then had one other injection at the beginning of my 3rd trimester with DS2. DS1 was stillborn at 24 weeks Sad and I had the injection then after they found that he was Rhesus positive. DS2 was born prematurely and again they found him to be Rhesus positive so I had the injection. Apart from the ones when I was lying there very ill in hospital (had severe preeclampsia and HELLP with both DSs) as an outpatient I was waiting in a ward on some hard chairs for about 2 hours despite my injection having been booked Hmm.

With DD however, I had only one injection at about 32 weeks and they had changed everything. It was done downstairs in the main consultation area (where I had my gestational diabetes appts, scans and consultant appointments) and I was in and out in about 10 minutes. And instead of being in my buttock/leg it was in my arm! I was then required to stay in the building for about 15 minutes before I went home. I couldn't believe how much more efficient they were! Then, after her birth I was told I didn't need another Anti-D because she was also Rhesus Negative Smile.

Interestingly, my own mother ws Rhesus negative and had not had the Anti-D with my sister in 1965 (wasn't done then I don't think). My next sister was born absolutely fine (Rhesus Positive), but my brother was pretty poorly and needed 3 blood transfusions - fine after though. Eight years later, I came along and they did an amnio and for some reason thought I would be affected very badly, so my mum was induced at 35-36 weeks and they whisked me away on a trolley...and brought me straight back Grin due to me having the same blood as my mother. Lucky me Smile!

By the way, try not to look at the needle as it is a bit scary looking but the actual injection wasn't any worse really than taking blood so try not to panic Smile.
Now what hurts more is the steroid injection they give you to try and help you build up more platelets or the one to mature the baby's lungs. It stings for about 10 minutes that one (but obviously considering the reasons you are having it, I don't think that anyone's main concern usually when having that injection). But ouch. And after the first one, I was incredulous when the next midwife 12 hours later and about to do the 2nd injection told me I was about to feel a 'sharp scratch' (WHAT?!).

SUTB - sorry to hear of the loss of your DS1 Sad

Nowadays the guidelines have completely changed.

I had DD april 08 and even from then til now it has changed. Now you aren't meant to have one before 12 weeks as your body doesn't build up antibodies before 12 weeks. and now you just have one concentrated dose at 28 weeks in the arm whereas before it used to be two or three doeses throughout the pregnancy and in the bum cheek.

They are developing tests to check babys blood group from mothers blood to save having to give unnecessary antids eventhough it causes no harm.

Found out today that DD is Oneg so I wouldn't have needed one after giving birth to her.

Hi Guys, I have just found out I am rheus negative (O-) and am a little concerned, as I bled at 9 weeks, 11 wks & again at 12 wks... by the time my blood results came back I am now 14 wks... I enquired with the midwife who advised if they had know at the 12 wk bleed that I was a neg then I would of had the anti D injection at week 12 (doesnt matter for the earlier bleeds). I have asked if everything will still be ok and she said "Probably"..has the happened to anyone else and was everything ok ? I am really worried now, as I have been feeling really rough over the last 2 weeks, literally sleeping constantly, headaches etc, and not sure if the 2 are related :(
I asked if they could test if my partner could be tested ( at least to put my mind at rest while we waited for the 20 wk scan to see if all ok) and she said no it is a waste of NHS money! I am going to find a clinic tomorrow to test my partner...fingers crossed everything will be ok :)

Things really do change. I'm O neg and had my children in '94, '98 and 02. My H is A pos, but I have never had an anti D injection. I guess my babies were tested at birth and they're all neg. But I also never had an injection during my pregnancies.

Just wanted to say good luck ladies with your pregnancies Smile
