Rh B-neg blood, anti-D injection and post coital sex...TMI sorry

Hi all

I am Rh B neg and have already had to have the anti-D injection at 13 weeks due to a bleed. I quite often bleed (tiny bit) after sex - my DH is away and we haven't DTD since I got pregnant (am now 14 weeks). He's due back in the next couple of weeks.

Am just wondering - has anyone else had bleeding after sex while rh B neg - do you keep having to go back and forth to the doctors for the anti injection? Puts me off having sex at all really...too much hassle and obviously don't like the idea of the bleeding potentially harming the baby. I know what the answer will be but would be nice to hear from someone else who has the same "rare" blood as me...

The headline should obviously say "post coital bleed"....not sex...baby brain!!!

Don't know the answer am afraid but might be worth mentioning this to the mw? Am also a 'rare' blood type and need those injections (later on I hope). Just had a discussion about this last week with the mw and she was like well you would need them if you had a knock or bled and didnt know about it. Not sure am any help at all!

Thanks vooodoomunkee - at the very least it's nice to know there are other "rarities" out there! :-) I am meeting my mw for the first time on Tues so I'm going to mention it then. I have booked in for the injection at 28 weeks as apparently you need to have it then regardless of bleeding etc. TBH I'm really quite worried about the not having sex business as a man has his needs ( I can make do much more easily without hah!) and we won't be able to have sex for a bit after the baby too as I'll be too sore (I would imagine, this being my first baby!), so potentially this means a year without DTD.... :-O

I imagine mw will say have sex, see if you bleed, then have the injection if need be. I'll keep you posted with what she says if you like! :-)

It's not the B bit that is at issue - just the RhNeg bit. Think I read somewhere that about 15% percent of the population has Rhesus negative blood.

Is this your first child? Do you know what blood group (i.e. positive/negative) your DH is? If he is also neg, then perhaps not so much of an issue.

I am A Rh neg. DH is A Rh pos. All three of my dcs are A Rh positive. DC3 had haemolytic anaemia and a transfusion but fine now. I now have anti-c and anti-d antibodies.

I'm A neg and bleed after sex most of the time. On DC2 now. I had anti-D early in second preg (13 weeks) next due at 29 weeks. It lasts a long time in your system so you don't need it every time you bleed (thanks goodness cos it hurts :( )
DD1 is Rh +ve so had another inj after the delivery

Thanks very much for the info pooka and nuttyone My DH is O pos and yes this is my first child - I think (but not sure so feel free to correct me) that you don't always need the injection til your second or something? Anyway, I've bled and already had one injection so I suppose at least it's in my system now. pooka your situation with DC3 sounds a bit frightening?! Poor you (and her/him). Is this usual for Neg/Pos conflict babies? (cue to say, no never happens, is very rare...)

That's good nuttyone that you don't need the injection every time you bled - not that I plan on DTD often mind but nice to know I don't necessarily have to hare off to the doctors to get an injection in my ass every time! My DH will be pleased with this bit of news as I think he was planning on additional gym sessions for the next year for "release"

Hi Catmad, i'm A RhNeg and had to have anti-D after all three babies, including the first, but not during the pregnancy. I didn't get any bleeding after sex until I was 'older' so that bit didn't figure. Talk to the mw. All the best.

that bloody jab is so painful! only had one so far, am booked in for my next when I have to have more blood drawn.

My favourite bit of finding out I'm O neg is that my nan insisted my dad isn't when I suggested that's where I got it from...if I didn't look so much like him, it could have been quite awkward! He's in the army so has it on his dog tags but she was convinced he had positive blood like her, no matter how many times he tells her.

When I told my mum, she said 'oh yeah, maybe they did tell me about that when you were born' - I come from a very vague, forgetful family!

How painful exactly?? :-( I'm rh neg.and will have to have my first one in a few weeks. Needles normally don't bother me at all so I assumed it would be straight forward but you lot have worried me a bit now... :(

I am B neg and had anti d after villioentisis tests and then after giving birth. WIth dd2 I had a third due to a minor bleed.
DD1 has 0 positive blood and no idea on dd2 as they diddn't test her.
For me it was an ordnairy vaccination and diddn't hurt at all.
I would discuss with Midwife or gp so at least you know where you stand....

thriceaaka and Rosa - thanks, it's interesting how differently people are experiencing being neg blood, will be interested to see what my mw says on Tues now!

natwebb79 - the injection was no different to any other injection I've ever had (just remember to relax, not easy I know when someone is hovering behind your ass with a needle ), but I had the contraceptive injection in my derriere for years so am used to needlesin that "area" . It only hurt like a pin prick does, don't worry - it's over in a flash . Overeactionoftheweek...it made me smile your comment considering your profile name as I didn't think it was painful at all! (everyone is different though, I cry in aeroplanes, at the dentist and spiders so I'm not very brave at all hah!) lol

And also made me smile what your nan said - reminds me of my mum always saying she thought she'd have a ginger child, I never understood why til years later when I found out my maternal grandfather was bright ginger (was white when I knew him and all photos were black and white).....good job I found out otherwise DH might have had a few questions if a red haired child popped out!

Do you need the anti-d after a fall/bump even if there is no bleeding as it can be a silent bleed?

I cant find the answer anywhere and the midwife has never gone over what being reh neg means...

Had a bleed 4 weeks ago and had to have the jab, then had the routine one last week at 28 weeks

Hi, just skimmed previous posts. 1 in 6 women have Rhes neg. You are given an injection at 28 weeks. This is done during your first and following pregnancies. Being rhes neg causes no harm to your first child. The reasoning is to stop your body rejecting your next pregnancy as your baby might have a different blood type.

winterbump I had a minor fall and experienced slight twinges. I was given anti d at 21weeks (within 72 hours of the fall) as there is the chance of a slight internal bleed when you fall. The mixing of your blood is what can cause problems in your next pregnancies.

Oh, I went straight to a&e when I fell and received no fewer than 4 major telling offs for not carrying my pregnancy notes with me

I was put on a trace for an hour to check baby and all was ok. No swelling so they did a blood test to see if there was any antibodies, if there is they are going to call me to have another anti-d jab. I see the consultant in the morning so will be asking them about it.

Hope all goes well tomorrow. I was monitored too, unfortunately I was then kept for 8 hours to wait on test results. Would have much preferred to go home :)

Catmad, sorry I can't be more specific to your question.

Natwebb, it is very straightforward and no more sore than a travel jab. My arm didn't hurt afterwards either.

Baby2b I was on the ward for about 6 hours :( by 11.30 last night I was contrmplating leaving without my notes!! I just wanted food and a drink but wasnt allowed on the ward whilst being monitored then they questioned me 'are you eating and drinking ok' well yes when im at home!!

When I was pg with DD1 it wasn't routinely given during pg. DD1 was neg so I didn't get it following birth after she was born. When I was pg with DD2 it was.

DH is neg too, but couldn't remember when I was pg with DD2 and couldn't find his donor card plus mw's look sceptical as if your DH isn't the baby's father if you mention it.

I had first one at 13 weeks then had to back for a second about 26 weeks due to a bleed. I opted out of the one at 28 weeks as it is long lasting, not sure how long exactly. M/w tried to encourage me but consultant agreed it was okay. I had consultant care for other reasons.

NotsoD H found his donor card a couple of weeks after DD2 was born and was indeed negative.

It wasn't that sore, more inconvenient when you go after a bleed as you're there for ages. M/W was a bit dramatic going on about it as it's a bigger needle & thicker substance if I remember rightly but it was fine.

Just thought I better pop back and see how people were getting on - my laptop died more than a week ago so have had no internet access! Nightmare! So sorry if I started this thread and appeared to bugger off without a word. It's been interesting seeing everyone's different experiences.

My m/w wasn't much help really, am losing faith in NHS m/w's, not their fault that all they seem to do is fill in forms while you sit there feeling totally ancillary to the process - am definitely finding my friends more help! My healthcare provider seems to be going down the line of "You are b neg therefore you will have the injection at 28 weeks regardless of being 1st or 2nd pregnancy". No-one seems to tell me why I need it in the 1st pg but it seems to be the line of thinking that any bleeding at all means you have to have the injection....so, that's put paid to getting frisky with the DH for the foreseeable!

catmad I'm shocked at how little information is being given to you. I have had at least three pamphlets on being rhs negative. Just don't have information relating to bleeding during sex 'counting' or not. The injection during your first pregnancy is the most important one though to stop your body creating antibodies that coud jeopardise future pregnancies. I hope you get some answers soon.
