Things about pregnancy that no one tells you

I'm starting to remember the weird things I noticed when pregnant with DS, mainly because they're happening again with this one, and at the time I wondered why no one ever mentions these things, not even the books (or at least the ones I read).

Things like:

  • rolling over in bed becomes a test of strength, patience, and momentum. It's all about timing the pivot and the flop and using Whatever is in reach (sorry DH) for leverage
  • your nipples get huge and change colour
  • morning sickness isn't just in the morning, sometimes it's all day and all night too
  • the random hormone-fuelled dreams
  • the hair. It'll either stop growing and go all lank or it'll grow like weeds. And it's not just the hair on your head that's affected
  • skin tags. For whatever reason they're common in pregnancy. I didn't know this until the doctor told me so when I got one on the end of my nipple, it turned black (the tag not the nipple)

Thanks for the hug, feel better now - was just having a bit of a wobble.

For those suffering from thrush I sympthise. Only one little bout during pregnancy, but suffered horribly when on the pill. The absolute best remedy is live natural yoghurt applied topically and regular washes with a very dilute white vinegar solution (about 2 tbsp vinegar to half pint of tepid water). The vinegar washes help balance the acid/alkali of your genitals and the yoghurt is immensely soothing and helps build up good bacteria. I would also recommend eating the yoghurt if you can stomach it - not the stuff you've applied to your nay-nay, obviously.

trust me - this is the best way to clear it up quickly and because all natural will be fine during pregnancy. Whatever you do do not use neat tea tree oil (ouch. Didn't realise it was supposed to be diluted) and some people (ie- me) can find canesten creams make it far far more painful, so beware of this even if they are safe during pg.

Hope that helps.

Going number 2 is no longer a once a day thing. I'm having about 4/5 craps a day.
Getting very hairy, Teen Wolf hairy.
And what's this I hear about a great sense of smell? I've had a blocked nose for 14 weeks!

Bumpsadaisie · 23/06/2011 15:56

MakesCakes

The first trimester IS really grim. Is this your first?

It does get better. By about 15 weeks you should be feeling your old self again, pretty much, promise!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 23/06/2011 16:01

Yes, my first. Week 11 started today - can't wait for the 2nd trimester to start!

And I second the teen wolf hairiness - wtf?

jaineinchina · 29/06/2011 08:03

Oh my God I am only 5 weeks in and I probably shouldn't have read any of this... I am feeling quite chipper at present but now nervous of all the horrors to come!

ninipops · 29/06/2011 08:14

The drooling while asleep - had this with DD and its back with a vengence this time round. I am seriously going to need a new pillow once DC 2 arrives!

KaraJS · 29/06/2011 09:28

The fact that you cant just be sick you have to wet yourself at the same time and god forbid you get a cough! The
the leg cramps at night, suddenly seeing an advert for chocolate on tv and having to eat some NOW! and the constant head aches and need to get up in the night to pee and eat beans on toast not to mention wanting to cry at every sad story or commercial about child poverty that comes on tv !

bigmacandhappymeal · 29/06/2011 16:00

This is a great thread

Mine are very similar

  1. itchy boobs -maddening
  2. getting a hairy belly - from nowhere - and having to shave my legs every week after it being a monthly occurence
  3. that what I always thought was PMT was actually what it would feel like a bit to be pregnant
  4. that although I liked kids, I'd never been particularly maternal but now if I happen to even catch the smallest glimpse of one born every minute I'm crying straight away. It's the look on everyone's faces I think. I'm welling up now.
  5. the farts. Awful. Blush
  6. I knew I might get mood swings but the desire to punch random strangers or work colleagues is all new to me
  7. that the difference between 14 weeks pg and 15 weeks would be huge for me - i felt like a human being again after experiencing what felt like an epic three month hangover + sea sickness.
  8. sex dreams. massive pervy sex dreams. Blush Who knew!?
Woodifer · 29/06/2011 16:32

ooh my leg hair has gone to less hairy - ie much less shaving than before.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 30/06/2011 12:04

heh - evil fart in bed recently.

DH: Jesus! I thought you were supposed to be creating life, but it smells like something died in there.

Thanks darling.

GrapeMuncher · 06/07/2011 13:47

Totally hilarious thread!! I'm on week 26 of first pregnancy and some of these posts have reminded me of things that I had already forgotten.

I could NOT forget the morning (AKA all day) sickness and being reassured that it will disappear at 12 weeks only to reach 12 weeks and still feeling horrendous being reassured it will pass in 15!! WHAT??!!! Shock

Being v breathless at an early stage, but it has been much better since 14 weeks - I have 3 dogs that need walking alot and can still manage going up hills.

V v v incredibly itchy back, hips, nipples etc. Thankfully only lasted for a few weeks.

My first pregnancy symptoms were going completely off coffee, chocolate and mint! So much so that the smell would have me running to be sick! Brushing my teeth was ridiculously difficult and I too ended up with Thomas the Tank strawberry flavour which I pinched from my 6 year old step-son.

Baby brain!!! Losing the thread of what you are talking about half way through your sentence and then not having a clue what you were talking about. Plus v v v bad memory. I have lists of things to remember everywhere and have started putting alarm reminder thingy's in my phone.

Massive hair growth everywhere except on my head where I would really like it to grow thicker as I have quite fine hair. V bad spots!!! Even whilst a teen I had clear skin and now it is terrible!

Being v emotional about everything!

And last but not least, restless leg syndrome! Thank goodness it's not just me!

On plus side DH thinks I look sexier than ever and he is v patient even when I wake him up at 2 in the morning because I am worried that we will have an ugly baby! Smile

KaraJS · 06/07/2011 14:25

Also insomnia and the massive urge I have allready ( I'm only 7 weeks) to put a pillow over dp head to stop the snoring! He says the mood swings are the worst, foesnt know what to expect when he comes home

CBear6 · 06/07/2011 16:02

I had Thomas Tank toothpaste too, GrapeMuncher! That was with DS but haven't needed it this time.

The all-consuming cravings are getting me at the minute: "I want some peppermint cream no, it has chocolate on. I don't want the chocolatey bit, just the creamy bit no, they're not right either .... Do we have any pineapple?"

Babies don't just kick and wiggle, DD is currently doing a move that feels like she is trying to stand up in there. She also uses my bits as a trampoline which makes me flinch every time - I'm convinced she's breech and kicking them but she might be headbutting them, either way it hurts.

Your skin reacts differently to the sun. Ten minutes and I'm brown but with DS it was ten minutes and I was bright red.

MissusTulip · 06/07/2011 17:52

I knew the old boobies would get veinier (that looks wrog no matter how I spell it) but I did NOT realise said veins would pop out like the veins on a weightlifter's arms. Confused Sex-ee!

questforanswers · 06/07/2011 20:36

I'm only 7 weeks in and I feel RUBBISH!! I am peeing every 5 minutes (needed early scan on 4th to rule out ectopic and was asked by the sonographer to empty my bladder as she couldn't see anything......I'd literally just gone straight from the loo into the scanning room!!), I have woken up at 3.30am every night for the past week with turd cramps (sorry a bit crass Blush), I have turned into an absolute monster with EVERYTHING winding me up, and my boobs don't fit my bras anymore (was 32H but guessing it's now bigger........ouch!) and the exhaustion is unbearable Sad

tigana · 06/07/2011 20:42

karajs Grin... i found squatting over a towel while retching digestive juices down the toilet to be such an edifying experience

questforanswers · 06/07/2011 20:42

Oh and you're lucky if I tell you my name.....I can't remember it!!!!

tigana · 06/07/2011 20:47

that i would slice my own hands with my suddenly super-diamond-hard fingernails ( even though trimmed sensibly short)...ouch

Zwitterion · 06/07/2011 20:50

Black poo from the iron tablets in my third trimester.

I developed an aversion to stretchy clothes. Just the thought of them, let alone the feel, made me throw up.

And I craved marmite and milk.

CBear6 · 06/07/2011 21:52

They also don't mention that other children are fascinated by pregnant bellies. DS is nearly two and he's obsessed by my bump. We told him
There's a baby in there and he loves to hug my tummy and stroke it (and suddenly lift my top up in Asda to show it to random people ... ), last night he had some Haribo and kept putting one in my belly button "for the beebee, share".

The increased sense of smell makes buses, lifts, and shops a treat for the nose. Sweaty pits with a dash of manky socks and a hint of illicit fart? Mmmm, there's a trip to town that I want to repeat!

OP posts:
Beccabop · 08/07/2011 21:41

Relentless discharge
Smelly pumps
Eveb just rolling over in bed bloody difficult and nackering in 3rd tri
Baby's wriggles/squirms can be really quite painful

however,

Lovely, lustrous hair (on head)
Lovely soft skin
Lovely enhanced cleavage

:)

lippyhippy · 13/07/2011 15:34

i find the weirdest thing about it all is that it changes every week, just when you're getting used to being a certain way. (except the one thing i want to change which is the relentless sickness.) but for instance this week I started having smelly feet. great! joy!

Grin to the pervy sex dreams, bigmac, me too! probably cos I'm not getting any! too sick!

Huffpot · 13/07/2011 15:43

Oh love this thread! It made me snort with laughter and realise it wasn't just me! I've got 2 under 2 and it's the first summer in 3 years I've not been heavily pregnant. I'd forgotten some of them - have just emailed it to a newly pregnant friend (first bub) because I think it's good to know all this and be prepared!

JenniferHolland · 13/07/2011 16:03

I'm so with you on "morning" sickness!!!!!!! I had those all day long for weeks!
