I'm 19 weeks pregnant with my first. I've had two mc in the past (both before 12 weeks). I had thought once I got into my second trimester I was in the clear, but all the coverage of stillbirths is starting to make me wonder if I'm being naive. Does anyone know what your risks of losing a baby after 12 weeks are?

I know I'm being ridiculous - but you can't help thinking about it when it's in the press every other week!

Just to clarify bornagainbitch's point about itching.

Itching that appears without a rash should be checked out with GP/hosp ASAP as it could be Obstetric Cholestasis, and is linked to stillbirth if the pregnancy goes beyond 37 weeks.

I have had OC and never had any particular itching on my hands or feet, it was more on my arms, legs and sometimes my bump. At 37 weeks I did actually develop a bit of a rash and I was told that I was lucky for it not to have been that bad before then. It isn't pleasant! Fortunately the itching went away completely when DD was born.

More info here

Note that there is also itching WITH a rash associated with pregnancy which is usually not problematic, it's called Polymorphic Eruption of Pregnancy (PEP).

great post northern lurker..

My first little boy was stillborn and I have to say till it happened to me I thought it was something that only happened in the dark ages or in 3rd world countries with no ante natal care. I think its a good thing that women are becoming more aware of the risks

If I could turn back time I would ask for 2 growth scans between 30 and 36 weeks and I would ask them to check the blood flow through the cord then my little boy would be here with me now

During my second pregnancy I knew the risks, what questions to ask and what tests and/or scans to demand ask nicely for .. although I was really scared I felt in control to some extent

I think the more knowledge women have of the risks the more we are empowered to avoid them

As someone who has lost their son at 39 weeks and 4 days believe me when I say I am praying for a safe and happy outcome for all the pregnant ladies on here

' I have also learnt that most babies who are lost around the fifth month are as a result of incompetent cervix.'

I don't think that is true. It may be for a number but i doubt MOST. What about Hughes Syndrome and infection or finding out about abnormalities at the 20 weeks scan (termination). Many people I know through babyloss groups have no reason given for their loss sadly. True IC is quite rare. It came as a shock to me that you can get an incompetent cervix even though you have had live births at term in the past. I had no clue until it was too late sadly. Luckily a stitch worked in my next pregnancy but it was an emergency operation. I lost another baby late to something else (chromosomal) and I agree with the person who said that the isolation is the hardest thing. You feel like the only one. Especially if it has happened more than once.

Please come and read the information on my thread Reducing stillbirth:Count the kicks campaign.

We all need educating.

I would also add that if you are at all worried about your baby's movement go and see your midwife. They will not mind.

my friend lost her baby at 5 months when i was 4 months gone. Neither of mine ever moved much and I just suddenly worried. Went to the midwife the next day and they got the doppler (is that what it's called?) out and played the heartbeat for me. They were so nice. And of course baby decided to show off football skills while we were there!!
