How far gone is she?

auntymandy · 04/11/2005 18:10

due end of this month

beansprout · 04/11/2005 18:12

Well, it can be serious but I'd assume that her MW/GP will advise her on the best thing to do. Hope she's ok. A friend of mine had it recently and they induced her a bit early. Everything was fine.

auntymandy · 04/11/2005 18:17

I am hoping they induce as she is so petite.. and her bump is very big
I'd hate her to have a really bad time of it

beansprout · 04/11/2005 18:19

Of course. All fingers in the Bean household are crossed

auntymandy · 04/11/2005 18:21

Thank you.
she did go to hospital last night but is home now and midwife to see her every other day

Blandmum · 04/11/2005 18:44

She may well be readmitted.

This happened to me, I'd be in hospital, the bp would dip a bit, sent home, bp back up, back in!

In the end they kept me in for 2 weeks prior to ds being born by section two weeks early (section unrelated to pre eclapsia)

ds and I both fine (he was 9 2!) It may be worth your neice planning to be redamitted , just in case. I'm sure things will be fine!

auntymandy · 05/11/2005 07:22

I will ring my brother later today to catch up on the news!

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 05/11/2005 07:39

auntymandy it's only dangerous if it is undetected. if she is being looked after by the hospital and monitored/treated then no need to worry.
She's nearly there anyhow!
(PS I have it too and currently doing the hospital hokey cokey, in out in out etc)

auntymandy · 05/11/2005 07:42

Yes I am sure she is willbe fine. Everyone keeping a close eye on her now!

brother just mailed me. She is ok today. Seeing midwife later. going to ask for pelvic scan too.

OP posts:
mears · 05/11/2005 09:07

Pelvic scan is if no use auntymandy - they cannot accurately predict how large the pelvis is. It used to be done routinely years ago but it was ineffective.
Try not to worry about her size - many petite women do very well with large bumps. There will be telltale signs in labour if baby cannot get through. The doctors and midwives will be on the lookout. If she has pre-eclampsia it is likely she will need readmitted at some point, as said earlier. She will be observed closely so don't worry.

auntymandy · 05/11/2005 11:01

but surely if they know the baby is big and she is small it is better to be on the safe side?

OP posts:
mears · 06/11/2005 16:40

It will not tell you whether a baby can get through. The pelvis gets larger with hormones causing relaxation of ligaments as pregnancy progresses and the baby's head gets smaller as the bones override each other during labour (moulding).

Small women can have big babies naturally. If the baby it truly too big, it's head will not go down into the pelvis before labour starts.

jersey · 07/11/2005 12:23

I had pre-eclampsia from wk36 of my last preg and was admitted to hospital. I was told that when you have p-e you can't go home until the baby arrives and most people are induced in this condition.

I was induce at 38 weeks and although painful was very quick.

Good luck to your niece and let us know how she does.

auntymandy · 07/11/2005 19:13

Mears.. I know you know your stuff but a friend of mine went in to labour early the baby got stuck..wont go into details as its not for me to tell her tale, but the head was born then baby had to be delivered by emergency section..very traumatic. Although very rare..none of the staff had come across it, it does happen and surely there is something to gaurd against this?

OP posts:
mears · 07/11/2005 23:33

There actually isn't auntymandy. It is very rare as you say. There are no reliable tests that will be able to accurately pinpoint a baby that is too large for mum. There are various pointers such as head not engaging, labour very slow, baby slow to come down etc. But there is no reliable scan that can give the information as to which babies might get stuck.

QueenVictoria · 07/11/2005 23:39

I had mild p e. Did the hospital hokey cokey too ( hc)

It was such joy carrying around a 2 litre bottle and a funnel every few days

auntymandy · 08/11/2005 06:30

oh, well mears we will just keep our fingers crossed that everything goes ok!

OP posts:
harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2005 07:44

morning Aunty Mandy, how is your niece doing?

Queen Vic - I was just thinking this morning how pleasant it is not to be peeing in a jug for a change... ah the simple pleasures. And if I may be permitted to brag - ahem - two 2-litre demijohns are required in my case over the 24 hours. I think I may be a freak of nature

QueenVictoria · 08/11/2005 13:38

Ahem......

I also required two also.

Really narked one of the day unit mw who had to go hunting for a 2nd bottle one day. She didnt want to give me the 2nd one they did actually have on the unit just in case someone else needed it. [confused emoticon]

I dont miss traipsing up the DAU with my carrier bags full of wee wee much either!
