Change in movements, still fretting

Hello all :)

33 weeks now and ended up at Triage last night as baby had quiet day. Heart trace fine and CTG(?) fine and baby moved twice whilst there but I'm still not happy. Her movements jsut feel different. More squirmy than kicking and more noticeably a lot less frequent. Not slept last night through fretting and wondering how long I leave it before I get in touch with midwfie again. Currently chopping an icelolly to see if that wakes her up. Tips or advice gratefully received.

I don't really have any tips, and it's good that your trace was reassuring, but please call your midwife asap. Go with your gut feeling. That way, the worst that can happen is that you get checked out unecessarily - which I am sure nobody will mind. Only you know what is normal for your baby. Maybe she's just moved position or something, but best to get it thoroughly checked.

hsmom · 05/04/2011 09:50

Hi,
I just read your post and while I can't offer any advice I am in a similar position. I am 34 weeks, but baby is small for gestational age (measuring about the same as a 30 weeker -fluid is 'normal' - having weekly scans at fetal medicine).
Over the few days, my baby has changed her movement pattern. She is doing that squirming you mention -like she is changing her position- but really erratically. I got in the habit of counting kicks just after dinner and getting to 10 within 10-30 mins. Last night she didn't move at all at that point, but then started doing that squirming thing about 2 hrs later when I went to bed. I am getting the odd movement on and off all day so havent contacted anyone.
Would also appreciate thoughts.
I am seeing my consultant tomorrow so will ask him anyway then and post.

I'd trust your gut too, but remember that at this stage it's getting very cramped in your uterus and baby won't be able to make as many movements as before - particularly if this is your first. I'm 34 weeks and I've noticed a lot more squirming than kicking recently and I can tell that my baby doesn't have a lot of room to move (and he's my second, so I'm already a bit stretched!). Plus, some days he's really active and others he's quiet. I find music wakes him up, so you might try putting on the radio. Mine isn't fussy and will wriggle to anything from classical to pop!

FABsBackAndIsWell · 05/04/2011 09:52

Any time you are worried about your baby you need to go and be checked. With my second child I was at the hospital every week and I know some midwives were annoyed but I didn't care. My baby was mine and what would happen would be with me forever, not some midwives giving me looks and comments.

ANY change in movements and you need to be checked whether they decrease or increase.

BettyGrable · 05/04/2011 09:53

On one hand you are netering the bit of pregnancy where the baby runs out of space and the movements start to feel different for lots of women- more wriggling and squirming than kicking.

However, I am a big believer in gut instinct and in better safe than sorry. If you are still not happy, go back to the hospital today.

Fwiw, I used to 'wake up' my babies by drinking cold Coke and then lying in a quiet room so I could feel the movements.

", but remember that at this stage it's getting very cramped in your uterus and baby won't be able to make as many movements as before - particularly if this is your first."

This is just wrong and dangerous advice to follow. A baby does not stop having as many movements as your pregnancy progresses due to having less room.

wobblyweeble82 · 05/04/2011 10:03

To be fair FABs, that's what the midwfie said to me last night. ALthough this is DC number 2 in this instance. I've decided I'm going to have an hour trying to bother her and if I'm still not happy say by 11, I'm going to ring my midwfie again. I'm not normally a fretter - it just feels different. She's normally a little raver. I'm wondering whether or not her back has gone against my tummy so I can't feel things the same. Still, only a midwife can tell me that. And I tried the coke thing yesterday before I rang triage - sod all! Just put me on a high!

hsmom Good luck with appt tomorrow. I was chatting with a friend this morning discussing how easily your forget that strong maternal instinct you have with babbies. DS is nearly 7, and I don't like awak worrying whether or not he's still breathing! Hope your consultant gives you positive news and answers :)

I had this last week, this is my 4th baby and I am almost 31 weeks, this baby is very active and last week just seemed sluggish, LOADS of people including my aunt and mum said the old "oh the baby must be running out of room" I have also heard this is rubbish, their movements should never decrease, I went and got checked out and typically the little bugger moved so much while I was there they had to reset the trace, but, always better to go and get checked tahn do nothing, while I was there getting checked another woman came in with the same thing, and was whisked off for an emergency section, and her toddler was left with a hospital volunteer as there was no time to wait for her partner, she was very very lucky she got checked that day!

RhiRhi123 · 05/04/2011 11:18

I was told by my MW to count the movements and they shouldn't drop below 10 a day. They get lower as the babies have less room to move so they also change from really moving to squirming as you say or the odd foot or elbow. If you can, get a pen and paper and mark down each time the baby moves throughout the day. However if you think it's less than ten i'd phone up and get checked out again. Also if you play loud music they tend to start moving! - good luck!

wobblyweeble82 · 05/04/2011 12:30

I stuck DH's whopping great headphones no either side of my belly and played her some T-Rex and that seemed to give her an active 10 minutes. I jsut want her to do it of her own accord and then I can relax a little. Oooh, the things us women go through.

RhiRhi123 · 05/04/2011 12:38

Ah i'm glad that worked a bit. You never know you might be really lucky he/she might sleep all through the night from very early on!

wobblyweeble82 · 05/04/2011 16:29

Well, after a chat with my midwife I'm going back in for another CTG trace thingy. Baby only moving really when I'm bothering her and I can't lose this niggling feeling so got to go back to Triage for half five. Feel glad I'm being seen but now also feeling slightly sick :( Midwife said they might want to scan me to check everythings a-okay which I guess will be the biggest reassurance of all.

FABsBackAndIsWell · 05/04/2011 16:35

Try not to worry wobbly. I remember that sinking feeling when the MW called you in but you are doing the right thing. I hope all is okay and let us know if you can. Take care.

wobblyweeble82 · 05/04/2011 16:44

Thanks FABs -trying to hold it all together, but think the sleepless night topped with the anxiety is all catching up and I'm basically a gibbering wreck! DS is upstairs playing, completely oblivious which is the main thing at this moment. I'd rather they said come in now - this sitting waiting, and clock watching is just torture. Mind you, I have to wait for DH to get in which shouldn't be too long. I could win the World Floor Pacing Championships if nothing else ... I shall report back when I'm home again. Deep breaths and all that jazz ...

FABsBackAndIsWell · 05/04/2011 16:57

I really hope it goes okay for you.

FABsBackAndIsWell · 05/04/2011 20:21

Any news?

wobblyweeble82 · 05/04/2011 20:32

Hey FAB,

Not long back in - popped me on the CTG for an hour and she's giving good heart readings :) Booked in for an emergency scan tomorrow at 13:30 to check placenta function. Midwives were lovely - v reassuring bout the CTG trace, told me baby doesn't appear to be in any distress :) Fingers crossed she's jsut turned into a lazy mare. She did tell me however baby was 'deeply engaged'. Have a sneaky feeling this one won't be sitting tight inside for the full 6 weeks I've got left. Thanks for your support today :)

FABsBackAndIsWell · 05/04/2011 20:35

That is good news.

I had a nightmare with my first baby so may be thought to over react but if I hadn't reacted with DC1 he wouldn't be here now.

Good luck for tomorrow.

hsmom · 06/04/2011 10:57

Hi Wobbly - thats great care they are giving you! :-)
My appt is at 14.30 today and I will be telling my consultant the same thing.
I get the odd movemnt but its for sure very different from how it was before the weekend. I lay awake last night hoping she would move and she barely did. Even the icy water trick didn't generate much more than one mild squirm.

Very best of luck for 13.30, and will look out for an update later,

wobblyweeble82 · 06/04/2011 11:07

Here's hoping hoping it's good news for all come sundown hsmom :)

FABsBackAndIsWell · 06/04/2011 14:10

Hopefully you have been checked by now and will soon be on your way home all fine.

wobblyweeble82 · 06/04/2011 20:19

All went well today - got to go bak for a scan weekly to check blood flow through placenta and cord etc, but baby happy all in all. Seems she's kicking the heck out of the placenta and I can't feel it. She's weighing in at 6lb 4oz already - still got 6 weeks to go! So obviously, a healthy baby all in all. And I feel OODLES better Grin. They've told me if I'm worried again, just go back for a CTG. Marvellous midwives here :)

Brilliant news. I am so pleased.

I had to have weekly scans with DD towards the end and it was always a heart stopping moment until the heartbeat was seen and then floods of relief what she was fine. She didn't move much so the scans were a great help.
