Am 6+1 and really really really really want a chinese for tea. Presume it's safe but just want reassurance really!

nickelbabyhatcher · 01/04/2011 16:54

no, that's a good question.

i'll wait with you. :)

strandednomore · 01/04/2011 16:55

Funny this because I remember being at a Chinese restaurant for a friend's hen party when I was about where you are and I wondered the same thing (I think it was the seafood). But it was an all-you-can-eat meal and I was starving so I tucked in.

You'll be fine!

deemented · 01/04/2011 16:55

Whyever not??? Of course you can!

ethelina · 01/04/2011 16:55

Well i did but whether you should is another matter. It caused me no problems btw.

LilQueenie · 01/04/2011 16:57

Ive eaten a few. I would avoid anything on the menu that is unsafe like shellfish but it shoud be fine. I think the only thing that would trouble me is if the restuaurant had a problem with people getting ill after eating it.

FannyPriceless · 01/04/2011 16:57

I think you may have answered your own question there!

Though I would suggest you don't get drunk, leave the leftovers on the kitchen table, and eat them the following day for breakfast after they've been sitting out in the sun for hours and the cat has had a go.Wink

vaginiasmonalogue · 01/04/2011 16:58

What do you think people in china eat when they are pregnant!!

VivClicquot · 01/04/2011 17:02

Why on earth do you think you shouldn't? :)

Leilababyno1 · 01/04/2011 17:03

??????? Of course you can eat a Chinese!..Grin

BarbieLovesKen · 01/04/2011 17:03

Course you can. I've ate countless chinese takeaways all through my 3 pregnancies with no ill effect.

Enjoy!!!!

nickelbabyhatcher · 01/04/2011 17:03

because everyone keeps adding things to the long list of things you can't eat.

VivClicquot · 01/04/2011 17:06

Who is 'everyone'? I don't think the NHS guidelines have changed for quite some time. If, however, you mean 'everyone' being scaremongering busybodies intent on frightning pregnant women into eating nothing but lentils and vegetables, then you probably have a point. Grin

ethelina · 01/04/2011 17:07

I'm pretty sure people in china don't eat the processed gloop we get in takeaways here. (My takeaway anyhow).

I prefer an indian meself.

BarbieLovesKen · 01/04/2011 17:07

I know, its daunting at first, isnt it? I was so particular over various guidelines with dd (number 1), but the guidelines changed so much by the time I was expecting number 2 that it made me a bit Confused by the whole thing.

I think a general approach of common sense is whats required, dont be too hard on yourself.

nickelbabyhatcher · 01/04/2011 17:08

that'a who i mean Viv - scaremongering busybodies! Grin

ethelina · 01/04/2011 17:08

"...frightning pregnant women into eating nothing but lentils..."

Lentils are frightening, certainly.

I'd rather eat a rare steak in pregnancy than a lentil.

lolajane2009 · 01/04/2011 17:08

i had one this week.... if i wasn't supposed to i'm a naughty lola.

ethelina · 01/04/2011 17:09

Actually I'd rather eat a rare steak anytime, for any reason whatsoever.

I love steak.

myredcardigan · 01/04/2011 17:09

I was told no because it contains copious amounts of MSG which is nasty. MSG is one of those nasty no-nos in pregnancy like aspartame.

Whether one meal would have any real affect on your baby is another matter. In the way that one cigarette probably wouldn't either.
But that's what I was told/read. However, my youngest is 3 so things may have changed.

VivClicquot · 01/04/2011 17:10

Hahaha ethelina. I confess to having had some rare(ish) steaks in this pregnancy. And an enormous amount of prawns and seafood. Lentils - not so much. Wink

ethelina · 01/04/2011 17:13

myredcardigan MSG in the nineties maybe, now not so much, they not allowed any more.

Viv I did actually stop eating prawns raw, twas about the only thing I behaved with.

Melly19MummyToBe · 01/04/2011 17:13

Ooooooh I really fancy a chinese now! I haven't had one for ages! 30+3 weeks here by the way, eaten quite a few and I ain't been ill yet! Just avoid shellfish and you should be fine. Although I tend to go for veggie stuff, we had chicken once years ago that really didn't seem very chickeny, it was very floppy and tasteless. My mum complained and all of a sudden no-one there spoke a word of english. . . . .

VivClicquot · 01/04/2011 17:14

I haven't had raw prawns. But sweet and sour king prawns / curried prawns / barbecued prawns while on hols etc ... tonnes and tonnes of the stuff.

myredcardigan · 01/04/2011 17:14

Really???
I didn't have any babies in the 90s! Mine are 7, 5 and 3. I read it in my pregnancy books and it was confirmed by my midwife.

I'm not aware MSG has been banned. That's interesting.

toddlerama · 01/04/2011 17:16

No worse than a diet coke I would have thought! Depends how strict you want to be. Personally I'd steer clear of a buffet towards the end of an evening even if I wasn't pregnant - they aren't kept at safe temperatures and sometimes sit there from lunch time.

I do have a fairly delicate constitution though....Grin
