Am 6+1 and really really really really want a chinese for tea. Presume it's safe but just want reassurance really!

diet coke is also bad due to shed loads of caffeine.

Leilababyno1 · 01/04/2011 17:17

Try and relax Daiso....I know it can be difficult. But don't get stressed out about what to and what not to eat/drink...Just go with your instincts and use your common sense- you will be fine. If your local takeaway looks like a public toilet and everyone who eats there normally comes down with a tummy bug- than stay well clear!

Now, go and enjoy that Chinese!( Bearing in mind that your local Chinese restaurant doesn't look like what I've described above....GrinWink)

Shellfish is actually fine in pregnancy now as long as they are cooked properly and there cooked when there pink! So a packet of cold prawns from the supermarket is absolutely fine! So are mussels as long as all the shells are open, I've eaten copus amounts of fish and shell fish through all of my pregnancies and I'm sick of the way they keep changing the guidelines! Unless you have allergies in the family, be wary, or your eating abroad, again be wary, but foods in this country are prepared to strict standards so are pretty much safe!
Unless you brought strawberry friji!!!! :) :) :) !!!!

LilQueenie · 01/04/2011 17:36

I thought the problem with fish/shellfish was the mercuty levels that made it unsuitable.

Melly19MummyToBe · 01/04/2011 17:37

Why is everyone like "diet coke is so bad! etc etc" what makes that worse than normal coke? Im just wondering because I don't think I've ever heard ANYONE say that normal coke is really bad, only diet coke. Confused

Melly19MummyToBe · 01/04/2011 17:42

No the high mercury levels are in stuff like Shark, Swordfish, and Marlin. So don't eat those! Oh and Tuna, but Tuna's not too bad if you eat 1 steak a week or 2 tins a week. With shellfish theres a danger that it's not been washed properly and can be all dirty and gross. If you cook it, it basically cooks away the dirt and makes it safe.

Daiso · 01/04/2011 17:58

Wow - thanks everyone!! I am inclined to think "stuff eat" everything in moderation but I am also the worse person in the world for "tempting fate/touching wood" etc so I know I'm worrying over and above but its my nature.

I shall ring through my chinese shortly ready for collection on the way home. Oh, and apologies to those who I've now given the cravoing too! Grin

If it's any consolation, I eat a packet of prawns, smoked salmon and cockles a day!!!!! Cannot get enough of it!! Have had to limit myself to every other day! All my body wants is those, everything else comes out!!!

RhiRhi123 · 01/04/2011 18:11

Some people say you shouldn't eat some fish e.g prawns but I have so far throughout pregnancy. I'm 33 + 2 and have probably had about 5 chineses's. I started craving crispy chilli beef :) i'm off to the chinese!

Misty9 · 01/04/2011 18:25

Mmmmm, I've just ordered Chinese :)

Melly19MummyToBe · 01/04/2011 18:27

I'm just about to grab my shoes and purse, I'm so glad the chinese is only on the next street from my house :o

myredcardigan · 01/04/2011 19:00

Melly, it's because diet coke has artificial sweetner in it whereas coke has sugar. Artificial sweetner esp aspartame is very nasty. I would always rather my kids had sugar than AS though, of course, I wouldn't give them Coke at all.

Melly19MummyToBe · 01/04/2011 20:40

Sooooooo, full fat coke is better for me than diet coke? Even though they're both bad.

KateeHasABunInHerOven · 01/04/2011 21:36

Interestingly the same chemical that is in msg is naturally present in things like broccoli and tomatoes... and they definitely don't tell us not to eat those!

I've been trying to get away from aspartame, it ain't easy. But have gone for the attitude that a little every now and again won't hurt. 7-up seems to be about the best... no sweeteners or caffeine.

Enjoy the chinese!

PrincessScrumpy · 01/04/2011 22:25

I hope not - I'm loving the takeaway at the moment - one of the few foods I can enjoy and isn't making me feel sick. I'm 15 weeks and will continue to eat it.

Not sure you can compare eating Chinese occasionally to smoking occasionally!

HLSalter · 02/04/2011 11:32

I was told by my MW that you couldn't eat beansprout which is a pain in the arse if I want Chinese. Not sure whether you should or not though.
