Have been told by the MW today that I have to give up runny eggs and salad leaves that come in plastic bags pre washed!!
Has everyone else given these things up?

I never gave up either of these...am now 36 weeks...But of course it's a personal choice, everyone has different opinions on food risks during pregnancy and what they are comfortable with.

I just made sure I bought reputable free range organic- and foods from quality leading supermarkets, but as I say it's a personal choice- like whether to have the occasional glass of wine or not....

P.S. Also got told that I can't have ice cream if it comes out of a nozzle!! Is ice cream from a tub ok?!!

I haven't given up runny eggs. I know you are "supposed" to. The risk is of salmonella, I think. However, salmonella is extremely rare in eggs in the UK (check you are buying eggs with the lion stamp) so it's a risk I am willing to run...

I don't buy that salad... is that about toxaplosis (sp?) ?

Leilababyno1 · 01/04/2011 15:11

Yes, fine! Grin

MadreInglese · 01/04/2011 15:11

I've been told that as long as the eggs are lion stamped it should be fine

Not heard the pre-washed salad one Hmm and I've been eating that throughout this pregnancy!

Leilababyno1 · 01/04/2011 15:12

Sorry...meant fine about the ice-cream...Grin

iskra · 01/04/2011 15:12

I mean I don't buy that salad anyway, not that I've given it up.

I actually haven't given anything up - except all but 2 glasses of wine a week!

Renaissance227 · 01/04/2011 15:12

Thanks for that Leilababyno1 x
Will keep up with the eggs and salad then. I was eating these during the first six weeks when I didn't know I was pregnant and was never ill!

I wouldnt give up my not quite done eggs and my mr whippy....

Renaissance227 · 01/04/2011 15:15

Was told that pre packed salads can contain the same kind of germs (?!) that eggs that aren't cooked thoroughly can.

If everyone else has been fine eating these things I will continue.

Thanks for the advice everyone. xx

If you buy eggs with a lion mark on them then they are vaccinated against salmonella. Watch out for organic or other types of eggs, as they usually aren't lion marked.

The salad thing is because of the listeria risk - it's actually much more likely that you will get listeria from bagged salad than from unpasteurised cheese. It should be fine if you wash it though :)

Renaissance227 · 01/04/2011 15:17

Thanks for that JarethTheGoblinKing. Will continue to eat the salad but wash it first. x

Helpful extract from NHS website:

'Listeriosis associated with pregnancy is rare and, unlike in older people, the number of cases has remained roughly the same during the past decade, with an average of 18 cases a year occurring in England and Wales'.

So it is rare....but I suppose each individual must weigh up what level of 'risk' they feel comfortable with..

Renaissance227 · 01/04/2011 15:27

Thank you Leilababyno1.
It sounds like a lot of people here have kept eating these things, so I think I will risk it. Smile

i thought it was ecoli in washed salad leaves. a couple of years ago some people died from it in the us hence the scare.

wash it and it's fine.

nomoreheels · 01/04/2011 15:36

I have compromised by cooking my eggs for a bit longer so they are still a bit runny, but partially set. 4 mins to poach a medium egg turns out well.

And I re-wash any bagged salad (don't buy it that much apart from cress though.)

Mum2Pea · 01/04/2011 15:37

As someone already mentioned, the ban on runny eggs is due to the risk of contracting salmonella. And soft ice cream is usually not pasteurised.
Both are a risk to the mum ? mainly of a dodgy tummy ? and neither (as far as I know) have an adverse affect on the baby

With DD I was good and didn?t eat either, and craved both constantly!
This time, the way I saw it, I was taking a minimal risk and knew it would not harm the baby, so have continued to eat both throughout

G1nger · 01/04/2011 15:41

You're all telling me to eat runny eggs, aren't you? I love you all :o

Renaissance227 · 01/04/2011 15:42

I'm hearing the same thing G1nger!! Smile
alone with... ice cream, ice cream, ice cream

I haven't heard a single thing before this thread about ice cream. So that's not even on my radar :)

exhausted2011 · 01/04/2011 15:48

yeah, soft ice cream, like from ice cream vans is supposed to be a no no, can't remember why.
Listeria?

bintofbohemia · 01/04/2011 15:49

I ate runny eggs and smelly cheese. Bagged salad is a bit grim though - you know it can have been sat in that bag for months and months and has no nutrients in it by the time you open it?

G1nger · 01/04/2011 15:51

Do you all realise that we're allowed to eat slabs of steak as rare as we like it, so long as we cook it to seal the edges? It's in the purple NHS pregnancy book. It's burgers and other minced up meats that we can't have pink.

lolajane2009 · 01/04/2011 15:53

i have mr whippy every time i se him outside the garden centre i go to. only every few months but sod it if hubby is going to have it so am i.

I don't really do bagged salads though
