Have been told by the MW today that I have to give up runny eggs and salad leaves that come in plastic bags pre washed!!
Has everyone else given these things up?

I thought we couldn't have ANY meat undercooked. I was told it all had to be well-done. Not got my purple book yet though!!
That's great new though, thanks G1nger

So do you all just buy lettuce instead of salad bags?

Renaissance - because clearly it matters to you, too :) : (P26 of the purple book): "It is fine to eat steaks and other whole cuts of beef or lamb rare, as long as the outside has been properly cooked or sealed" :o

iskra · 01/04/2011 15:56

I've always just bought lettuce instead of salad bags, but for other reasons (preservatives etc).

bintofbohemia · 01/04/2011 15:58

I've never bought bagged salad since reading the chapter about it in this book.

Lettuce is loads better value as well. Smile

G1nger · 01/04/2011 15:59

I wash lettuce from salad bags, just like I do other fruit/veg etc.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 01/04/2011 16:04

Pregnant women are advised to avoid certain cheeses, Mr Whippy, bagged salads and pâté (although the issue with pate is also to do with vit A if it's a liver one) because of the risk of Listeriosis.

Listeriosis is very rare but the consequences of contracting it are devastating.

That's great news about the steak and lamb, thanks G1nger Grin
Will buy lettuce now, thanks bintofbohemia and iskra

Misty9 · 01/04/2011 18:30

Really??? I've been craving rare steak soooo much :)

lolajane2009 · 01/04/2011 18:34

acccording to said purple book:

'it is fine to eat steaks and other whole cuts of beefs and lamb rare, as long as the outside has been properly cooked or sealed.'

Melly19MummyToBe · 01/04/2011 18:47

The only reason you're not supposed to eat runny eggs is incase the particular hen that laid that particular egg missed the salmonella vaccination. Also, how many pregnant french women do you reckon have given up blue cheese? Mr Whippy ice cream is something to do with the temperature it's stored at being less than ice cream from a tub. Apparantly.

I got my purple book in my bounty pack at my booking appointment! Suppose it depends where you live really :)

cassnstar · 01/04/2011 20:00

We have at least 8 eggs a day laid by our hens which are not vaccinated. Big orange yolks, and just don't know what to do- have had them softly scrambled. sometimes all I want is a runny egg sandwich!!

nickelbabyhatcher · 02/04/2011 11:51

cassnstar - do yo uknow they aren't vaccinated? I mean, did you have them from eggs, or did you get them POL?
Most POL hens have been vaccinated. Ours have.
but if you got them as eggs, they won't be, as you've only got 8 and the vaccine comes in 1000s.

colditz · 02/04/2011 11:54

I DIDN'T EAT STEAK FOR 9 MONTHS BECAUSE I WAS PREGNANT AND HATE IT WELL DONE, HEADS ARE GOING TO ROLL FOR THIS OMISSION

candr · 02/04/2011 12:15

Only stopped eating Brie and other soft chees but miss ricotta etc. Have eaten bags and bags of spinich so hope there is no prob. Feel the more foods you avoid the more vitamins you miss an more likely of baby developing allergy. Don't eat meat so still eat fish with occasional cooked prawns.

Scaredycat3000 · 02/04/2011 13:07

I'm now having a big rare steak for tea. Yay!

Chrononaut · 02/04/2011 15:24

mmmmm runny eggs

glitternanny · 02/04/2011 18:04

I've given u everything I've heard I should!!

Dippy eggs included!

I thought mr whippy and some milkshake - ie macd - it's about the cleanliness of the tubes....

PrincessScrumpy · 02/04/2011 18:51

I only have runny eggs when I know the eggs are really fresh. I also had a chocolate mouse which I think had raw egg in it but it was very nice - didn't risk anything with dd1 but I'm far more chilled this time. I've already had the flu (a week before my flu jab) and a violent sickness bug (combined with morning/all day and night sickness) and babies have survived that.

cowboylover · 02/04/2011 19:31

I would love to have a stat behind the fact as so much changes ect and when its different for different countries can we really take it seriously!

I dont have a purple book as dont think we get them in Wales!

I have backed my own opinions with it all and if I want it I have eaten it but my BF is obsessed with what to and what not to do: thought she was going to faint when she saw me eat camenbear (spelling?) with a glass of rose last week.

Stick to the biggies of dont smoke or drink more that a few glasses and I think we and our babies will be fine!

Melly19MummyToBe · 02/04/2011 20:41

I got told by a midwife about the mr whippys and stuff like that. Although I guess the cleanliness of the tubes makes sense too, I imagine they can't be very clean =/
