Hi Ladies,

Has anyone else experienced bleeding in early pregnancy? Today I've had a bloody discharge (a dark pinky colour) and although I've read it's quite normal, I can't help worrying :(. It's been off and on all day. Any comments would be very much appreciated x

I had this last time I was pregnant (with twins!). Call NHS direct. They sent me to out of hours GP, who did nothing but booked me for a scan at EPAU the next day.

Good luck, it should be fine, but you must get it checked out. :)

muffins · 17/03/2011 21:38

I'm currently 11+5 and at less than 4 I had pink discharge, same again at 6 weeks and at 11 weeks a brown discharge with brown stringy bits-sorry tmi!

Scan shows all well so try not to worry. Even though I completely freaked out as never had any in 1st pregnancy.

MikeHock · 17/03/2011 21:42

Yes, I had this at 6 weeks, along with pain in one side - I was convinced it was ectopic Sad.

Went to A&E and was examined, they could see "old blood" and I got booked in for an early scan on the Monday morning.

They couldn't see anything with the tummy scan, so I had to have a vaginal scan and there it was, my little bean with it's heartbeat flickering away - all a false alarm!

I now have a lovely 2.8 yr old boy!

I know how worrying it can be, but try not to worry as it doesn't always mean something bad Smile.

BlueMoomin · 17/03/2011 21:51

I've bled at between 5 / 7 weeks with all 3 of mine.
The bleed in this pg (DC3) was bright red and scared the beejeez out of me. I had early scans with all of them and thankfully they have all been fine - but it is scary when it happens.
With me the early bleeds with DC1 and 2 have been impantation and with DC3 they were unsure - the mw could see the bleed on the scan but wasn't sure what it was.

I would get it checked out if you are at all unsure. It's hard, but try not to worry - not all bleeding in early pregnancy is bad.

Good luck x Shamrock

hellymelly · 17/03/2011 21:54

I had this too.I was scanned at the EPU where they could see a sac but were not sure if it was viable,as no heartbeat (too early),so I was scanned again a week later, heartbeat fluttering away! She is three now.I think I had the pinky and then brown discharge for a few days,if I remember rightly.Best of luck!

Figaro82 · 17/03/2011 22:00

Thank u so much ladies :) I'm going to hold out till the morning and if it's still happening then I will call doctors. I'm really trying not to worry, but it's not easy!!!! I don't think it's heavy or consistent enough for me to worry to much yet. I have an appointment with midwife on Monday so will talk to her about it then if it does stop x

I am 6+3 today, and last Saturday (5+4) I had a bit of bleeding over 4 hours. Was really worried - some was definitely more red than brown - but it stopped and nothing since. Somewhere I read that up to 50% of women have spotting in pregnancy, so though it seems alarming it may well be pretty routine. (I also spotted twice before I knew I was pregnant, once quite heavily, so that I thought it was definitely my period coming.)

Figaro82 · 18/03/2011 17:39

I spoke with my midwife this morning and she said it was perfectly normal and only to worry if it got heavy and if there was bad cramping too. I has a tiny bit of spotting this morning and then it stopped so feeling a lot better about it now!

I had this in January - scan showed empty sac and we were fearing the worst - 10 days later a new scan showed id twins. Turned out it was secondary implantation bleeding after the egg split. Good luck.

freelancegirl · 19/03/2011 11:54

I have had pink/brown spotting for the last 24 hours. Went to A&E this morning but nothing they could do. I have period like pain too and back ache. Nothing really painful but it's pretty consistent so I feel rather worried. And am tired with slightly low blood pressure. All could be normal or all could not be normal! The hospital don't do scans over the weekend and my 12 week scan is scheduled for Mon PM. Just got to wait, I guess. Ho hum. :(

MikeHock · 19/03/2011 21:16

Hope you are ok freelancegirl - how are things now?

Is it your first?

It is horrible waiting, I was a nervous wreck. Can you try to keep busy with something?

Figaro82 · 19/03/2011 22:10

Mine stopped yesterday. It's so worrying, but from what I have read it seems to be pretty common and doesn't mean anything is wrong. My mum told me she had the same spotting as I've had in the last few days with all 3 of her babys and they all turned out ok (not sure about me though!). Fingers crossed for you on Monday and let us know how it goes x

freelancegirl · 19/03/2011 22:17

Yes, it's my first.

Am not sure how I am to be honest. Passing burgundy blood and a few painful cramps (not as many as before). Will let you know on Monday! I was feeling upset and stressed but am now thinking what will be will be. It's a bit up and down though.

Thanks for asking! xx

PenguinArmy · 20/03/2011 02:18

freelance I'm having the same symptoms. Am currently 10 weeks with appointment on Wed.

While I know it's within normal range it is still a bit worrying and like you I have been all kinds of up and down today (being on my own has not helped).

Every so often the cramps make me stop what I'm doing but it hasn't crossed a threshold yet.

Anyway good luck to all of us.

Jacksmania · 20/03/2011 02:23

Nothing to offer except it's supposed to be normal.

Will be thinking of all of you. xxxJM

freelancegirl · 20/03/2011 13:49

Hi Penguin. Thanks for your message. I do feel for you.

I think for myself I have now crossed that threshold from normal to something definitely wrong, unfortunately. Although it's not a lot of blood it has gone to a brighter red now and is consistent, as are the very strong cramps. Painkillers and staying in bed are helping but I have a feeling it's not going to be a positive outcome.

I do feel awful, but the only thing keeping me sane is the thought that if it is meant to go wrong, it is meant to go wrong. I don't mean in some sort of fatalistic way but just that if there is something wrong with the baby, this is something that is likely to happen.

SO I am trying to think positive, think about all the lovely things ahead, thinking there will be plenty of opportunities to try again in the future and looking forward to knowing for sure, one way or the other, tomorrow with a scan. Sorry I can't be more positive! But good luck everyone xx

Jacksmania · 20/03/2011 14:55

Oh freelancegirl - I'm so sorry to read that :(
I hope a (((((HUG))))) wouldn't be out of line?
I'm being a mother hen and I know you most likely know this already but please call someone if you start passing heavy clots or enough bright red blood to soak a sanitary towel every fifteen minutes.
xxJM

freelancegirl · 20/03/2011 15:33

I feel like I have hijacked this thread! thanks for the hug, it's nice to know there are people to talk to :)

Although it is definitely still there, It's not really the blood that's the main prob. I had one 10p size clot last night and only really a splash (sorry!) or two when I go to the loo. The cramping is quite severe though, even though have taken painkillers. Comes in waves, like the clenching of a fist. Am not sure whether to go to hospital again tonight (am sure they will say there's nothing they can do again) or just wait for scheduled scan tomorrow.

Jacksmania · 20/03/2011 15:41

You're not hijacking. Well, I'm not the OP so I don't know how she feels but I can't imagine she'd mind. We're all just sharing our experience.

Sadly, I doubt the hospital will be able to do anything. If you pass a ton of clots, and they do a scan and nothing is viable :(, they might (might) offer you a D&C just to speed up the process. Depending on how busy they are. But usually they just tell you to let nature take its course :(.

I'm so sorry. I've had two M/C's so I feel your pain.
The cramping is awful. But (I'm sorry, I hope I'm not upsetting you further) their purpose is like contractions - to open the cervix to be able to expel things. And because this is your first pregnancy, your cervix is very tight and it hurts.
I'm so, so sorry. Holding you in my thoughts.

PenguinArmy · 20/03/2011 22:10

OP I hope things are still well with you

freelancegirl: I'm sorry that things seemed to have escalated for you. I think you're just as well waiting for tomorrow but maybe ring them first thing and explain your situation. Take care of yourself and give yourself lots of rest.

Figaro82 · 21/03/2011 10:14

I don't mind at all!! It's great that everyone can join in and share their experiences on here!! It's really helped hearing everones comments. Still bleeding lightly, but I'm seeing my midwife this afternoon.

Freelance, I really hope your appointment goes ok this afternoon x

freelancegirl · 21/03/2011 11:32

Hello everyone! Physically it got a lot worse yesterday. For around 9 hours I was having contractions every 3-4 minutes. I've never known pain like it. Spent some hours last night at A&E again and got some heavy duty painkillers. Still feeling pain through them though! Not expecting good news later but I feel weirdly philosophical about it. Of course, I have been upset, but if it's going to happen I just want to get it out of the way. It's awful, but not the worse thing that can happen at this stage. I have to remember that people go through a lot worse at later stages, lose children...If any of you are going through the same thing I hope you can feel ok too. Jacksmania thanks for the advice and support. Figaro I think what you're going through sounds a lot more positive. From my research a bit of bleeding is fine, a bit of cramping is fine, a bit of clotting is fine - it's just when you have them all in one huge bleeding, contracting whammy that it's not so good!

Will update later but maybe it might not be on the right thread and I don't want to upset anyone! All I can say is it's bearable. It's amazing how strong you become in some situations. And I am thinking of the positives: trying again soon, assuming this is happening as it is for the best, planning nice things to do - spring is coming, my mum plans to take me shopping to cheer me up (she was going to get me some maternity gear but now spring fashions are calling!), and I intend to make the most of the time until the next pregnancy (fingers crossed) by enjoying wine, forbidden foods and having the energy to go to gigs, pubs, see lots of friends etc etc. Keep feeling positive everyone xxxxxxxx

Jacksmania · 21/03/2011 14:59

Freelance - I hope I'm not speaking out of turn but I at least would really like to know the outcome of your appointment - could you at least come back and post a smiley or a sad face so we know?

Thinking of you.xxJM

freelancegirl · 21/03/2011 17:33

Big sad face... :( But it's ok. Am trying to move forward. Will be better once I get the next step out of the way. Come join me on my 'Reasons to be cheerful' post on the miscarriage board. Thanks though, it's been nice to have this support xx

Jacksmania · 21/03/2011 19:51
