As the old thread is nearly full here it is time a brand new thread is born. All we need now is a new vomit face emoticon MN towers!

We are a bunch of past, present and future Confused HG sufferers (along with worried spouses, family and friends) who use this thread to support, listen and discuss the dreaded pregnancy illness that is HG (hyperemesis gravidarum).

There are no limits on how much moaning posters can do nor can anyone's symptoms or experiences be tmi.

The old thread has been a great support to many of us and we hope this new thread carries on the great work started by old thread founder and HG guru LucindaE. She still maintains, supports and clucks Grin around the thread daily even though her own experience of HG is thankfully over.

So with no further incoherent rambling from me on with the new thread eh?

Diddygirl Poor you, I feel for you, the best of luck at the GP's, as you've had it once and been hospitalised, I hope they take it seriously...Brave you for going for it again. The saliva thing is foul. Re blood, I'm pretty sure that GP's only seem to see it as a cause for concern if its brown and therefore from the stomach. I had the red blood, and still get it with migraines, and it looks awful, but dr's don't seem bothered by it. Really glad your DH is understanding, that makes such a difference. Would ice cubes/ ice lollies help your poor throat and with rehydration? Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on at the appointment.
NitNat Great tips from you, too, and Grumblin.
Cocaonuts Glad the foul fibere is doing the trick, was it you who said yuo had felt kicks and I meant to say 'that's lovely' becuase it makes it all seem worthwhile, but I forgot? Whoever it was, congratulations!
Grandma You are so right about MOH and that invaluable information.
How is Evreyone? Grumblin ml must have started - how are you today?

Fluffy That is so sweet, thank you! Hugs always appreciated, the same to you. I was very worried about you when I couldn't get in touch with you via the defective 'MumsNet' messaging a year ago, it makes me so happy that you and baby are flourishing now. Smile

Aw thank you for your lovely words. Well in all my 36 years of going to the docs, today I was seen by a locum and for once in my life, I really felt listened to. I was in there for 35mins and he listened to every word I said and took everything seriously (unlike my usual GP who constantly looks at his monitor as if he's only half listening!)

The locum was relunctant initially to prescribe cyclizine (sp), which I had last time with DD and was going to refer me to EPU. Anyway, he rang the EPU who said to go ahead and prescribe it. He was so thorough and has given me a sick note for 2 weeks (initially said 3, but we're on half term then anyway). He's given me more antibiotics for a urine infection which I had 3 weeks ago and am not convinced it's cleared (my GP refused to give further antibiotics on Mon). He's also given me mouthwash cos I struggle to clean my teeth. Oh and he sorted my MAT B1 form so that I don't have to pay for any of it - I wasn't expecting to get this til my booking in appointment in a couple of weeks.

I was almost in tears as I left because he was just fab. I told him he was the best doctor I'd ever seen and he stood up and shook my hand! He kept telling me that after 2 MCs, this baby is precious and everything must be done to ensure mother and baby have a fighting chance.

I have just taken my first tablet and I'm looking forward to when they kick in - does anyone know how long it takes? It's 5 years since I had my DD and can't remember how long it took before I started feeling normalish.

I haven't read all this thread but I will do, or at least some of it. HG is just unbelievably debilitating and I think if you have been through it yourself, you have so much sympathy for others who experience it.

Thanks
xx

MOH100 · 13/05/2011 21:39

diddygirl your doc deserves some kind of award, well done to him and how fantastic for you. It's just such a relief when you get a doctor who actually listens and takes it seriously. Good luck with the cyclizine, I never had it so can't advise how quickly it works but here's hoping. If it worked last time, it should do again.

For more info, can i suggest you read my post from two days ago. I've been writing something for the mumsnet website which others on this forum have contributed to so it's good info from people who know. It's quite long, you might have to get your DH to read it for you if reading the screen makes you sick.

good luck and well done your locum doc, tell him he's got a fan club!!

MOH100 · 13/05/2011 21:43

Anyone else watch Corrie? noticed how sick pregnant teen Katy is? do you think a major soap is actually going to do a hyperemesis storyline...?

I've sent ITV an email to ask about it. I'll let you all know if I get a reply.

diddygirl · 13/05/2011 22:28

Thanks MOH - I have just read your post and think it is amazingly informative. In terms of 'coping strategies', I recommend that HG sufferers always carry around with them a little 'first aid kit'. I know it sounds nuts but in the car on the way to the docs I took with me some nappy sacks, baby wipes and a pack of tissues in case I threw up in the car - I did and luckily was prepared. If people have this with them it will at least take that worry away.

I can't believe how low the percentage of HG sufferers is. How unlucky are we?!!! That said, I thought there would be more out there to support research into the condition (UK based).

I did watch Corrie and thought it was amazing how she was having a brew in the cafe - that's the first thing I went off!! It will be interesting to see if you get a response from ITV - this is such a good platform for highlighting the condition.

Good luck to all HG sufferers - we'll get there!

nitnatnaboo · 13/05/2011 23:12

Hi all, Welcome Diddygirl sorry you're suffering again but yay for your locum Doc. He sounds great! I had IV Cyclizine first and that worked in about 30 seconds. When I went onto the tablets I felt the first few "kick in" as well - I would go so relaxed I would be virtually cross-eyed with them! I didn't find that the effect built up over a few days like some people do, so I'd say they worked straight away. I was also given Metaclopramide before being hospitalised, at 2nd GP's visit.

Grumblin happy maternity leave if you have started. Did you get a nice send off?

Hurrah! I am back on tea again! I feel this is a landmark. Bought a lovely 2nd hand china teaset from a charity shop and the tea tastes great out of the cups. No vom here since weekend but I reserve the right to moan anyway. I have got a nasty horrible cold and my bump is really hurting as baby has had her feet in the same place for weeks. Have been practically chanting "this too shall pass" tonight. 9ish weeks to go!

caramellokoalalover · 14/05/2011 11:31

coconuts the zofran used to make me constipated and I found the only thing that helped was lactulose, which you can get over the counter if you can't get to a GP for a script. If you can tolerate swallowing it that is, although it doesn't have a particularly offensive taste. Better than cardboardy Fybogel. Hooray to feeling the kicks too! That's a good reminder that it's all worth it in the end.

AgBag glad things have improved ever so slightly, hope it continues to get better and better.

I think I read the other day too someone asking about HG getting worse with each pregnancy? For the record, and to give women hope, I'm one of the minority on here who had a better time second pregnancy than first. I put it down to early aggressive intervention with medication and acupuncture and also the ability to call in support early from friends and family to help me mentally and physically get through. Was still sick and taking meds to the bitter end but didn't have to be hospitalised once which I consider a small victory, and don't feel quite so depleted in the aftermath of HG either.

theonly so glad to hear things improving for you too.

Everyone has done an amazing job putting together the HG text. As others have said, it will really help people I'm sure and I would have wept to have read it in the early days and know it wasn't me going crazy or just being weak.

Diddygirl we need more GPs like the locum who saw you! I'm so glad that you got some help and were actually listened too, must have made you feel instantly better just for that!

nitnat - have a Brew with me! And get rocking on all fours to get your little girl to wriggle about a bit and relieve the pressure!

Thinking of everyone else too. Lucinda hope you're well, big hugs as always.

Things in Caramel house are good. Scarlett is 3 weeks old now Shock and such a joy. I thought of all you amazing women when I was just watching Saturday Kitchen and realised I didn't have to turn over when they showed things I don't like, which would have had me heaving just weeks ago. Sending lots of courage to those in the early throes of HG, much cheering for everyone else still suffering xxx

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 14/05/2011 13:53

Hi all :)

diddy - your locum GP sounds fabulous, really pleased you got a prescription. In my experience with the cyclizine you have to give them a few days to kick in sickness wise but immeditaely they will make you feel tired, groggy and all round lousy. You need to persevere with this feeling and keep taking them after about a week to ten days the drowsiness should lift. Please don't think that they are making you feel so shit so you stop taking them or you'll be back to square one or worse. Rest is the key with cyclizine. I was taking myself off for naps numerous times a day, hope you have a good RL support network.

Caramello - I had lactulose with DD's pregnancy and asked my midwife if I could have some and she told me they don't prescribe it in pregnancy anymore and that fybogel is best. The fybogel is working ok so will stick to that until I run out. I might mention constipation at my scan on Friday when I see the MW and see if I can get a prescription for something or fybogel is going to work out rather costly over the next few weeks/months.

I also had my first cup of tea yesterday in about 5 months. Yay!!! Grin

MOH - I don't watch Corrie, but keep me updated and if they start to do a HG storyline I may have to tune in. Hope ITV get back to you, that would be cool!

LucindaE · 14/05/2011 17:52

Caramel lovely to hear from you, Scarlett three weeks already? Hugs back as always, Grin as per the ones for Fluffy beneath, your and Fluffy's figurines have left the strategy board and are in the pink castle in the sky now...(I once had a Snakes and Ladders Board that had that as the last place). Newbies that may make me sound insane, but NitNat saw this thread as working a sort of board with counters going back and forth according to state of health, ie one square was 'Puking and Peeing' etc and even has one on her page!
NitNat and Cocoanuts Congratulations on tea from an addict. NitNat congrats on tea set and no puking too, wonderful...Smile sorry about painful bump [cluck cluck] face. It will pass, honestly...

La Are things still good?
Grumblin Dare I ask how you are? Did the fresh mint do any soothing at all?
Well done again on all that information when feeling horrible.
MOH waves cheerfully.
Diddy Still glad you had a nice locum, I do so hope the meds start helping soon. You are so right about emergency kit. 'Never venture into the street without a carrier bag'...
Everyone I hope nobody worse, at least? Sorry if anyone been on lately overlooked.

Pink castle in the sky - it's lovely here :)

littlewizz · 14/05/2011 19:43

Good evening Ladies, Welcome diddy and any other newbies!

diddy Cyclizine has worked well for me and whilst this my 2nd HG preg hasnt been as bad as the first I too put this down to early agressive treatment from understanding doc its still been hard work and fairly rubbish! Cyclizine made me really woozy and zombie like for about 2 weeks but stick with them as i'm now fine on them hard I know when just being pregnant early on is so exhausting - I slept an awful lot really struggled looking after DS1 who is nearly 4. Still getting frequent daily bouts of nausea and the odd vom - early morning bile runs are rare now at nealt 15 weeks, but strict routine of wake early take tablet 1hr before having to get up and whatever I can manage to eat before I get out of bed. then tablet at 12noon and 6pm.

A HG storyline in a major soap would be fab as its soo under exposed and so belittled as just morning sickness. When anyone calls it morning sickness I just want to slap them really hard makes me so cross. But then I worry as Eastenders totally screwed up the cot death story line. but at least some exposure would make it at least known about.

Highlight of my week, managing a lovely steak at Jaimies Italian in Oxford. Not much on the menu was actually safe to eat if pregnant but the lovely waiter knew exactly what I could and could not eat safely - he even knew that the parmesan they used wasnt pasturised. He suggested the minute steak and some chips with truffle oil as I said I couldnt manage sauce. He was spot on the best meal I've had in nearly 4 months. So on the way out as well as tip I made sure his manager knew how helpful he had been and how appreciated it was.

Right a night of Eurovision after a busy day catching up with my NCT group from DS1 we all had boys and a few have moved away but we all made it today, mummies, daddies and boys.. even those with 2nds have all had boys!! 9 boys between 6 of us and 2 more babies on the way this year! Now all my closest group of friends.

theonlyhb2 · 14/05/2011 21:31

my midwife on friday (a different one): "so...you have been a little bit sick haven't you?"
me: No, I have had hyperemesis
her: oh yes.....

i looked the picture of health turning up swigging a can of Dr Pepper and she looked at me like she had never heard it helped to burp (and I have a lot of trapped wind)

still no puke.....other half cooking roast at mo and we tidied the house today even though we slept til 2pm. it has been THE most normal day ever

diddy welcome to our little group, they are the best here when you are feeling down

ElliottsMummy · 15/05/2011 09:41

Morning all, hope everyone is having an ok weekend. Mine got off to a crappy start yesterday when I woke up with a cold and sore throat :( really aggravated my HG all day and was sick 5-6 times - hardly been sick all week before that!
Apart from that have had a good week back at work - managed my 3 afternoons and 1 morning no problem. By Friday afternoon I was shattered and asleep on the sofa but still all good. Hard to think how much energy doing normal things takes!!
Had 20 week scan on Wednesday and all is good. We decided to find out in the end and we are having a girl :) this means one of each which is what I was hoping for! We are telling everyone that we didn't find out though, to save the bother of last time when some ppl wanted to know and others didn't - very confusing!! So it's nice to be able to actually tell someone :) little man was so excited seeing the baby on the screen and we got the woman to just say "b" or "g" so he doesn't know and tell everyone!!!

Welcome Diddy your locum dr sounds like the one I had - so much better than any normal Gp I saw - for some reason they seem to have more time to really talk to you whereas some Gps seem like they are in such a hurry and you are just a number. I wonder if locums have different rules or restrictions on them?!?

Hello all, not been on here for a while but have had a little read back to see how everyone is. Welcome to all the newbies, and sorry you have to join us, but I'm sure you'll find the support on here invaluable - I do.
I've had a busy week workwise and have been so tired, but the voms seem to be more under control. Scan tomorrow which I'm looking forward to - it's the first proper one since the early one at 7 weeks when I was hospitalised. Sorry to hear ElliottsMummy has a cold sore. I've had 2 so far this pregnancy and I'm sure it's because of being run down from the hg. Anyway, hope everyone's having a reasonably restful weekend.

diddygirl · 15/05/2011 13:12

Hi everyone
Aw thanks so much for making me feel so welcome. It's nice to have somewhere where you can offload to people who understand. I'm finding the cyclizine ok so far. LucindaE · 15/05/2011 19:19

Hello Everyone. Diddy It is nice to have you with us, if not in the happiest circumstances now, they will become so...My teeth went disgustingly unbrushed as often as not, I am sorry to say. Glad cyclazine is helping you.
theOnly That comment from the midwife was rather condescending, or was it meant to be a joke?! Dr Pepper and a good burp is just the thing.
Elliotts Mummy Sorry about cold and poor you about five to six pukes - move back a space, oh dear, hopefully that is a temporary setback. Cold sores are awful, what is the name of that stuff you can get for them at chemists, so annoying you have one on a Sunday when so many are closed.
Congratulations on getting the baby girl you want and getting back to work.
Pearl I'm glad you are better overall and good luck with scan, exciting.
Pipoca Good luck with birth...
Grumblin You are on the home stretch.
Hope Everyone is having a reasonable day.
Most peculiar dream. I hope it doesn't make anyone feel ill for me to relate that I dreamt I had a piece of electronic equipment stuck down my throat and was choking on it. Shock Freudian significance, I dread to think...

my compuetr skills are not very good so may I ask advise please? is there any way we can send the wonderful information that moh is compiling on to the gransnet site to help other newbie grans like me who had no idea about HG before?

grandmaagain · 16/05/2011 16:21

told you!!! computer not compuetr!!!

pipoca · 16/05/2011 16:29

Isabel born in 2 and half hours on Saturday morning at 1.25am. 3280g. Now home and getting used to having 2 children and loving not being sick any more!!

MOH100 · 16/05/2011 17:24

grandma I still have some more input from other members to add to it - more tips on eating, first aid kit etc- but don't have time at the moment - I missed out on free time today, DD has virus so couldn't go to nursery. I aim to finish it but probably won't have time this week. Once it's done, I'll repost it for any final comments. I would assume you can then copy and paste into your gransnet talkboard?

LucindaE · 16/05/2011 18:01

Just hopping on to say big hugs, congratulations Pipoca. There at last!
Well done. Have some Wine and [brew} on me. So happy for you.
Waves madly at Everyone, including 'MOH and Grandma. MOH* keep up the good work.

Pipoca - Huge congrats :) :) Isabel is a lovely name. we have great taste in names here on this thread it appears! So pleased your HG is gone, have a Brew

Speedy delivery, and is that about 7lb something? I only work in pounds and ounces when it comes to babies! Grin Congratulations again!

fluffywhitekittens · 16/05/2011 19:34

Congratulations Pipoca - come and join us survivors on the comfy cushions with tea and cake :)

MotherofPearl · 16/05/2011 19:58

Many congratulations to Pipoca! It's so good to be reminded of the prize at the end. I had my 13 week scan today and am pleased to annouce that my EDD has been slightly revised to 17/11/11 (bumped up by two days). So thrilled that this might mean 2 days less of feeling sick! All looked good on the scan, and it was sweet to be reminded that there's a real baby in there, not just a vom-producing machine!
